Duck Nesting On Rotational And Continuous Grazed Pastures In North Dakota, Robert K. Murphy, Darrell J. Schindler, Richard D. Crawford Jan 2004

Duck Nesting On Rotational And Continuous Grazed Pastures In North Dakota, Robert K. Murphy, Darrell J. Schindler, Richard D. Crawford

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

To improve the economic viability of grazed prairie and thus conserve it as wildlife habitat, the Prairie Pothole Joint Venture (PPJV) cost-shares establishment of rotational cattle grazing on privately owned, native rangeland. During 1996 and 1997 we evaluated duck nest density, nest success, and nesting habitat on six PPJV rotational grazed pastures on the Missouri Coteau landform in central and northwestern North Dakota. Each rotational pasture was paired with a traditional, continuous grazed pasture for comparison. We located 444 nests of eight duck species. We detected no differences (P > 0.1) between rotational and continuous grazed pastures in apparent nest density …

High Abundance Of Nesting Long-Eared Owls In North Dakota, Robert K. Murphy, Laura J. Rosenfield, Robert N. Rosenfield, Melvin P. Nenneman

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The long-eared owl (Asio otus) is a secretive, poorly understood species in the Great Plains of the United States and Canada. In North Dakota the long-eared owl has been considered a species of special concern (Petersen 1991), due mainly to lack of information on its occurrence and nesting status. We discovered 39 long-eared owl nests while searching for Cooper's hawk (Accipiter cooperii) nests in northwestern and north central North Dakota during April and May 2000. Long-eared owl nests mainly were observed at J. Clark Salyer and Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuges (NWRs) in the Souris River …

Non-Native Species Monitoring And Control In The Upper San Juan River, New Mexico 2004, Jason E. Davis

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Intensive non-native removal in 2004 on the upper San Juan River marked the fourth year of such efforts. A total of 6,925 channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus and 1,216 common carp Cyprinus carpio were removed from RM’s 166.6 – 147.9 during 10 removal trips. Of the 10 trips, 6 were conducted from PNM Weir to Hogback Diversion (RM’s 166.6 – 159.0) and four from Hogback Diversion to Shiprock Bridge, New Mexico (RM’s 158.8 – 147.9). In addition to intensive removal efforts, opportunistic removal during riverwide monitoring trips continued in 2004.

Environmental Contaminants Associated With A Swine Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation And Implications For Mcmurtrey National Wildlife Refuge, Matthew S. Schwarz, Kathy R. Echols, Mark J. Wolcott, Karen J. Nelson Jan 2004

Environmental Contaminants Associated With A Swine Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation And Implications For Mcmurtrey National Wildlife Refuge, Matthew S. Schwarz, Kathy R. Echols, Mark J. Wolcott, Karen J. Nelson

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Waste generated by concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) may contain a variety of contaminants including nutrients, pathogens, trace elements, antibiotics, and hormones. In 2000, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service began to characterize CAFO contaminants in lagoons, canals, and created wetlands operated by Hastings Pork, a large swine CAFO adjacent to McMurtrey National Wildlife Refuge (McMurtrey) in Clay County, Nebraska. The created wetlands were designed to attract waterfowl; therefore, the primary purpose of this research was to evaluate whether migratory waterfowl were likely exposed to CAFO contaminants. A secondary research objective was to determine if created wetland water was suitable …

Adaptive Harvest Management: 2004 Hunting Season

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The process of setting waterfowl hunting regulations is conducted annually in the United States (Blohm 1989). This process involves a number of meetings where the status of waterfowl is reviewed by the agencies responsible for setting hunting regulations. In addition, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) publishes proposed regulations in the Federal Register to allow public comment. This document is part of a series of reports intended to support development of harvest regulations for the 2004 hunting season. Specifically, this report is intended to provide waterfowl managers and the public with information about the use of adaptive harvest management …

Breeding Birds Of Research Natural Areas In Southeastern Alaska, Brad A. Andres, Matt J. Stotts, Julie M. Stotts

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The Tongass National Forest encompasses a large expanse of temperate rainforest in southeastern Alaska and contains 12 designated Research Natural Areas (RNAs). Existing in as near a natural condition as possible, RNAs receive minimal commercial and recreational use. Because few bird studies have been conducted on RNAs, we used point counts and area searches to determine the occurrence and abundance of breeding landbirds present in vegetation communities of RNAs. Of 49 species of small landbirds detected during area searches, the most widely distributed birds among RNAs were rufous hummingbird (Selasphorus rufa), chestnutbacked chickadee (Poecile rufescens), winter …

Attachment Theory : How To Treat Attachment Disorders In Adults, Kristy L. Hrdlicka Jan 2004

Attachment Theory : How To Treat Attachment Disorders In Adults, Kristy L. Hrdlicka

Graduate Research Papers

Attachment is a bond formed between two individuals over a period of time, dealing with how they relate to one another through their interactions (Sable, 2000). In this paper, a review of the literature is discussed regarding how the attachments between individuals are formed and the four different patterns of attachment: Secure, anxious-ambivalent, avoidant, and disorganized. Following the review, practical interventions are also provided for counseling professionals to use when working with clients who have attachment disorders.

Ethics And Genetic Privacy, Jennifer C. Robinson Jan 2004

Ethics And Genetic Privacy, Jennifer C. Robinson

Journal of Health Ethics

With the mapping of the Human Genome and increasing interest in genetic testing and therapies, the potential for ethical problems has increased. Nursing and medicine have the ethical responsibility to “do no harm” and to protect the privacy of clients. However, our clients may also be family members and descendants of those we care for. The purpose of this article is to discuss issues related to genetic privacy using a deontological approach and to outline methods to protect clients and research participants.

Cloning, Expression, And Purification Of Glyoxysomal 3-Oxoacyl-Coa Thiolase From Sunflower Cotyledons, Anke C. Schiedel, Silke Oeljeklaus, Patricia Minihan, Jim Dyer

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The glyoxysomal β-oxidation system in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) cotyledons is distinguished by the coexistence of two different thiolase isoforms, thiolase I and II. So far, this phenomenon has only been described for glyoxysomes from sunflower cotyledons. Thiolase I (acetoacetyl-CoA thiolase, EC 2.3.1.9) recognizes acetoacetyl-CoA only, while thiolase II (3-oxoacyl-CoA thiolase, EC 2.3.1.16) exhibits a more broad substrate specificity towards 3-oxoacyl-CoA esters of different chain length. Here, we report on the cloning of thiolase II from sunflower cotyledons. The known DNA sequence of Cucumis sativus 3-oxoacyl-CoA thiolase was used to generate primers for cloning the corresponding thiolase from sunflower cotyledons. …
