Biotransformation Of Two-Line Silica-Ferrihydrite By A Dissimilatory Fe(Iii)-Reducing Bacterium: Formation Of Carbonate Green Rust In The Presence Of Phosphate, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, John M. Zachara, James K. Fredrickson, David W. Kennedy
United States Department of Energy: Publications
The reductive biotransformation of two Si-ferrihydrite coprecipitates (1 and 5 mole % Si) by Shewanella putrefaciens, strain CN32, was investigated in 1,4-piperazinediethanesulfonic acid-buffered media (pH ~7) with lactate as the electron donor. Anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate, an electron shuttle, was present in the media. Experiments were performed without and with PO43- (P) (1 to 20 mmol/L) in media containing 50 mmol/L Fe. Our objectives were to define the combined effects of SiO44 - (Si) and P on the bioreducibility and biomineralization of ferrihydrites under anoxic conditions. Iron reduction was measured as a function of time, solids were characterized …
Chloroquine Resistance In Plasmodium Vivax, J. Kevin Baird
Chloroquine Resistance In Plasmodium Vivax, J. Kevin Baird
United States Navy: Publications
Emerging resistance to chloroquine (CQ) by Plasmodium vivax threatens the health of the hundreds of millions of people routinely exposed to the risk of infection with this organism. CQ has been the first-line therapy for vivax malaria since 1946 (32, 115). Plasmodium falciparum developed resistance to CQ in the 1950s (110), and today it occurs globally (91). Resistance by P. vivax was unknown until 1989, when Australians repatriated from Papua New Guinea failed routine treatment (94). Subsequent reports affirmed that finding, and CQ-resistant P. vivax (CRPV) was reported from Indonesia (8, 35, 99, 100, 111). Reports from Myanmar (76, 82) …

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Over the last decade, research has examined the endocrine-disrupting action of various environmental pollutants, including hormones, pharmaceuticals, and surfactants, in sewage treatment plant effluent. Responding to the growth of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and the pollutants present in their wastewater (e.g., nutrients, pharmaceuticals, and hormones), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency developed a new rule that tightens the regulation of CAFOs. In this study, we collected wild fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) exposed to feedlot effluent (FLE) and observed significant alterations in their reproductive biology. Male fish were demasculinized (having lower testicular testosterone synthesis, altered head morphometrics, and smaller …

Evaluating The Human Relevance Of Chemically Induced Animal Tumors, Samuel M. Cohen, James Klaunig, M. Elizabeth Meek, Richard N. Hill, Timothy Pastoor, Lois Lehman-Mckeeman, John Bucher, David G. Longfellow, Jennifer Seed, Vicki Dellarco, Penelope Fenner-Crisp, Dorothy Patton
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Defining the mode(s) of action by which chemicals induce tumors in laboratory animals has become a key to judgments about the relevance of such tumor data for human risk assessment. Frameworks for analyzing mode of action information appear in recent U.S. EPA and IPCS publications relating to cancer risk assessment. This FORUM paper emphasizes that mode of action analytical frameworks depend on both qualitative and quantitative evaluations of relevant data and information: (1) presenting key events in the animal mode of action, (2) developing a “concordance” table for side-by-side comparison of key events as defined in animal studies with comparable …

Suicide Risk Assessment And Implications For Counselors, Shannon L. Beelner
Suicide Risk Assessment And Implications For Counselors, Shannon L. Beelner
Graduate Research Papers
Beginning counselors may not be thoroughly knowledgeable in the art of suicide assessment. It is the purpose of this paper to review the current statistics of suicidality, known risk factors of attempting and completing suicide, crisis intervention techniques, how to carefully conduct a mental status exam, models of suicide assessment, and implications for counselors. The models surveyed in this paper were Leenaar's (1994) five step model which is considered the most common model in crisis intervention, the second model comes from Frierson, Melikian, and Wadman (2002), and the third model is the Chronological Assessment of Suicide Events (CASE approach) by …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Maurice D. Betzel
Graduate Research Papers
Today's aspiring principals may have a lot to worry about, but they also have a lot to celebrate. Not only do today's principals have to worry about the mental and physical challenges of the principalship, but they also are living in a time of tremendous possibility for systemic change. The possibility for raising the level of student performance is not only unprecedented, it is to be celebrated.
Principals must have a tremendous desire to lead in today's world. They must believe every child can learn and help that child discover his/her particular way of learning. They must have a commitment …

Immature Sea Turtles In Gullivan Bay, Ten Thousand Islands, Southwest Florida, Wayne N. Witzell, Jeffrey R. Schmid
Gulf of Mexico Science
An in-water survey for immature endangered and threatened sea turtles in the coastal waters of southwest Florida during 1997-2003 yielded 191 Kemp's ridley (Lepidochelys kempi), 15 loggerhead (Caretta caretta), 13 green (Chelonia mydas), and one hybrid hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata)-loggerhead turtle. Mean carapace lengths were 40.3 cm minimum straightline carapace length (MSCL) for Kemp's ridley, 65.5 cm MSCL for loggerhead, and 51.6 cm MSCL for green turtles. Fibropapilloma tumors were found on seven of the green turtles and one loggerhead turtle. The mean growth rate of recaptured Kemp's ridleys was 6.3 cm/yr. The …

Fishes Of The Charlotte Harbor Estuarine System, Florida, Gregg R. Poulakis, Richard E. Matheson Jr., Michael E. Mitchell, David A. Blewett, Charles F. Idelberger
Gulf of Mexico Science
To date, 255 fish species in 95 families have been reliably reported from the Charlotte Harbor estuarine system in southwest Florida. The species list was compiled from recent fishery-independent collections, a review of reports and peer-reviewed literature, and examination of cataloged specimens at the Florida Museum of Natural History. Thirty-nine species are new records for this estuarine system. Many of the newly documented species are common on the west Florida continental shelf and associated inshore habitats. Twenty-two previously reported species were not included in the species list presented herein on the basis of more recent research, doubtful original identifications, or …

Regulation Of Vibrio Anguillarum Empa Metalloprotease Expression And Its Role In Virulence, Steven M. Denkin, David R. Nelson
Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications
Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) were challenged with Vibrio anguillarum strains M93Sm and NB10 and empA null mutants M99 and NB12. Both wild types were virulent when administered by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection or anal intubation. NB12 was avirulent via either route of infection. M99 virulence was attenuated when delivered by intubation, but fully virulent by i.p. injection. Northern blot analysis revealed empA expression in M93Sm and NB10 cells incubated in mucus, while incubation in Luria-Bertani broth plus 2% NaCl (LB20) induced empA expression only in NB10. Nucleotide differences between M93Sm and NB10 empA sequences were found in regions located …

Whole-genome expression profiling revealed Escherichia coli MG1655 genes induced by growth on mucus, conditions designed to mimic nutrient availability in the mammalian intestine. Most were nutritional genes corresponding to catabolic pathways for nutrients found in mucus. We knocked out several pathways and tested the relative fitness of the mutants for colonization of the mouse intestine in competition with their wild-type parent. We found that only mutations in sugar pathways affected colonization, not phospholipid and amino acid catabolism, not gluconeogenesis, not the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and not the pentose phosphate pathway. Gluconate appeared to be a major carbon source used by …

Describing The Ball: Improve Teaching By Using Rubrics - Explicit Grading Criteria, Sophie M. Sparrow
Law Faculty Scholarship
Assessment is crucial to effective teaching and learning. Carnegie's Educating Lawyers and Roy Stuckey's Best Practices for Legal Education emphasize the importance of assessment. This article explains how detailed, written grading criteria describing what students should learn and how they will be evaluated should be a central part of law teachers' assessment plans. The article details how rubrics can improve law student learning, and contains both detailed, step-by-step directions on creating rubrics and examples of rubrics from many different law school courses.
The Hegemony Of The Copyright Treatise, Ann Bartow
The Hegemony Of The Copyright Treatise, Ann Bartow
Law Faculty Scholarship
This Article asserts that major conceptions about the appropriate structure, texture, and span of copyright protections and privileges have been fashioned by copyright treatises, particularly the various editions of Nimmer on Copyright. Copyright treatises function in concert with the machinations of Congress, the courts, and custom, but their role is not often scrutinized.
Because copyright treatises typically do a far better job than Congress or the courts of explicating copyright law in straightforward and accessible language, such treatises can not only communicate the copyright law, but also influence its development and direction. Policy makers no doubt understand that content owners …

HIV-1 infection can be associated with neuropsychological (NP) deficits ranging from subtle to severe. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the functional, or “real-world” impact of HIV-associated NP impairment in a group of 267 HIV-infected participants. All participants received comprehensive NP, neuromedical, and standardized functional evaluations that included laboratory measures of shopping, cooking, financial management, medication management and vocational abilities. Compared to NP-normal participants, those with NP impairment performed significantly worse on all laboratory measures of everyday functioning. Multivariate analyses revealed that the NP ability domains of Abstraction/Executive Function, Learning, Attention/Working Memory and Verbal abilities most strongly and …
