Psychological Resilience: The Influence Of Positive And Negative Life Events Upon Optimism, Hope, And Perceived Locus Of Control, Michael Philip Hand
Psychological Resilience: The Influence Of Positive And Negative Life Events Upon Optimism, Hope, And Perceived Locus Of Control, Michael Philip Hand
Frank Dilley Award for Outstanding Doctoral Study
The purpose of this study was to clarify the optimal levels of optimism, perceived locus of control, hope, and degree of adversity experienced in life, in the development and maintenance of psychological resilience. A sample of 328 male and female students from Walden University and Washington State University completed either online or paper versions of a questionnaire consisting of the Life Orientation Test-Revised, Internal-External Locus of Control Scale, HOPE Scale , and the Life Experiences Scale . A series of bivariate correlation and multiple regression analyses tested the relationships between and among the five variables. As predicted, the bivariate analyses …

Fourteen mono- and dichloro-8-quinolinols were tested against five fungi (Aspergillus niger, A. oryzae, Myrothecium verrucaria, Trichoderma viride, and Mucor circinelloides) and compared with the fungitoxicity of 8- quinolinol in Yeast Nitrogen Base containing l% D-glucose and 0.088% L-asparagine. All of the compounds were more fungitoxic than 8-quinolinol except for the surprising activity of 8-quinolinol against A. oryzae. Mixtures of the MICs of monochloro- and dichloro-8-quinolinols in which the halogens were in different positions of the quinoline ring showed synergism. Comparable mixtures in which one position of each compound was occupied by the same halogen showed additive activity. In a different …
Iraq And The 800-Pound Gorilla Revisited: Good And Bad Faith, And Humanitarian Intervention, Davis Brown
Iraq And The 800-Pound Gorilla Revisited: Good And Bad Faith, And Humanitarian Intervention, Davis Brown
UC Law SF International Law Review
One of the leading justifications for the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and removal of the Ba'ath Party from power was that Iraq had developed chemical and biological weapons, and was rapidly developing nuclear capability. The author's previous article, "Enforcing Arms Control Agreements by Military Force: Iraq and the 800-Pound Gorilla," argued that the invasion was lawful, even without Security Council authorization, by taking a new, injury-remedy approach to war theory. With no weapons of mass destruction yet found in Iraq, new justifications must be found to legitimate the invasion. The author revisits the injury-remedy approach, incorporating good and bad …

Semantic Analysis For Monitoring Insider Threats, Svetlana Symonenko, Elizabeth D. Liddy, Ozgur Yilmazel, Robert Del Zoppo, Eric Brown
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
Malicious insiders’ difficult-to-detect activities pose serious threats to the intelligence community (IC) when these activities go undetected. A novel approach that integrates the results of social network analysis, role-based access monitoring, and semantic analysis of insiders ’ communications as evidence for evaluation by a risk assessor is being tested on an IC simulation. A semantic analysis, by our proven Natural Language Processing (NLP) system, of the insider’s text-based communications produces conceptual representations that are clustered and compared on the expected vs. observed scope. The determined risk level produces an input to a risk analysis algorithm that is merged with outputs …
The Digital Reference Research Agenda, R. David Lankes
The Digital Reference Research Agenda, R. David Lankes
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
This article presents a research agenda for the study of digital reference. The agenda stems from a research symposium held at Harvard in August 2002. The agenda defines digital reference as "the use of human intermediation to answer questions in a digital environment." The agenda also proposes the central research question in digital reference - "How can human expertise be effectively and efficiently incorporated into information systems to answer user questions?" The definition and question are used to outline a research agenda centered on how the exploration of digital reference relates to other fields of inquiry.
Geomorphology, Sediment Analysis And Restoration Plan For An Incised Urban Creek : Don Dahvee Creek, Monterey, California, Kimberly Anne Derenzo
Geomorphology, Sediment Analysis And Restoration Plan For An Incised Urban Creek : Don Dahvee Creek, Monterey, California, Kimberly Anne Derenzo
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The progression of urbanization throughout the state of California has had overwhelming and long-term effects on the state's waterways. Don Dahvee Creek appears to be physically declining because of active channel erosion due to urbanization. This erosion has affected the amount of sediment being conveyed into Lake El Estero and the Monterey Bay. For this assessment the geometry of Don Dahvee Creek, adjacent to Whole Foods Market in Monterey, CA, was examined to determine rates of erosion. Suspended sediment concentration samples (SSC) were taken in an attempt to determine if the creek is a source of water pollution due to …
Science And Policy : The California Market Squid Fishery, Monica C. Diaz
Science And Policy : The California Market Squid Fishery, Monica C. Diaz
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
With an increasing demand for squid, the fishery has grown enormously from when it first started in the 1800's. Due to the expansion of the fishery, many policies and management plans were implemented to ensure a sustainable fishery. Along with the increase of fishing vessels and new technology, management plans have been created to help with the competition between fishermen and to monitor the squid population. Squid reproductive success and spawning biomass are affected by many climate factors such as El Niño, and monthly temperature changes. Events like El Niño can devastate the population size and the fishery. With the …

Increasing Fort Ord Groundwater Supply By Use Of Recharge Basins, Emily Rose Roth
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Currently there is a shortage of water in Monterey County. Many solutions for these problems are being discussed, especially the prospect of a desalination plant in Moss Landing (MPWMD, 2004). One solution that is being widely used around the world, but not locally, is rainwater harvesting. Rainwater harvesting is the capture of rainwater from roofs and roads (Texas Guide to Rainwater Harvesting, 2004). Once captured, the water can then be stored in cisterns or allowed to recharge the groundwater for future use (Centre for Science and Education, 2004). To calculate the amount of water that can be captured, the catchment …
Marine Geology And Potential Rockfish Habitat In The Southwestern San Juan Islands, Washington, Janet E. Tilden
Marine Geology And Potential Rockfish Habitat In The Southwestern San Juan Islands, Washington, Janet E. Tilden
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The San Juan Islands region, located in Washington's seismically active northern Puget Sound, have a complicated and not yet fully understood geologic history. Due in part to the region's geology, the underwater landscape is morphologically complex and this complexity equates to habitat for a number of declining bottomfish species including rockfishes (genus Sebastes, family Scorpaenidae). In this study, multibeam bathymetry, multibeam backscatter, and underwater video data were collected and combined with existing geological, geophysical, and biological information to map the marine geology and identify and map potential adult rockfish habitat, specifically for copper (Sebastes caurinus) and quillback rockfishes (Sebastes maliger) …

“I Fell Off [The Mothering] Track”: Barriers To ‘Effective Mothering’ Among Street-Level Prostituted Women, Rochelle L. Dalla Dr.
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Ecological theory and basic assumptions for the promotion of effective mothering among low-income and working-poor women are applied in relation to a particularly vulnerable population: street-level prostitution-involved women. Qualitative data from 38 street-level prostituted women shows barriers to effective mothering at the individual, community and societal levels. Suggestions for enhancing the lives and long-term well-being of prostituted women with children are included.

Fossil Neviusia Leaves (Rosaceae: Kerrieae) From The Lower-Middle Eocene Of Southern British Columbia, Melanie L. Devore, Steven M. Moore, Kathleen B. Pigg, Wesley C. Wehr
Faculty and Staff Works
Fossil leaves assigned to the disjunct rosaceous genus Neviusia A. Gray, N. dunthornei DeVore, Moore, Pigg & Wehr sp. nov. (Rosaceae, tribe Kerrieae) are described from the lower-middle Eocene One Mile Creek locality near the town of Princeton, southern British Columbia, Canada. The leaves are elliptic to broadly ovate, seven-lobed, up to 4.9 cm long X 5.6 cm wide with craspedodromous venation and two to three sizes of marginal teeth. They bear a striking resemblance to N. cliftonii Shevock, Ertter & Taylor, the recently discovered species of the Mount Shasta area of northern California, and differ markedly from the type …
Nesting Biology Of Three Grassland Passerines In The Northern Tallgrass Prairie, Maiken Winter, Douglas H. Johnson, Jill A. Shaffer, W. Daniel Svedarsky
Nesting Biology Of Three Grassland Passerines In The Northern Tallgrass Prairie, Maiken Winter, Douglas H. Johnson, Jill A. Shaffer, W. Daniel Svedarsky
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Basic nesting information on grassland passerines is needed for improving grassland bird management. Among the information needs are (1) the suitability of nesting habitat, (2) periods during the breeding season in which birds are most vulnerable to disturbances, and (3) how to fit grasslands into a priori- tization scheme for conservation. Comparisons of nesting parameters among grassland species will help identify important management considerations. We describe and compare nest-site characteristics, nesting phenology, clutch size, hatching and fledging success, and brood parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) for three grassland passerine species nesting in tallgrass prairie of northwestern Minnesota …

The Wetland Continuum: A Conceptual Framework For Interpreting Biological Studies, Ned H. Euliss Jr., James W. Labaugh, Leigh H. Fredrickson, David M. Mushet, Murray K. Laubhan, George A. Swanson, Thomas C. Winter, Donald O. Rosenberry, Richard D. Nelson
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
We describe a conceptual model, the wetland continuum, which allows wetland managers, scientists, and ecologists to consider simultaneously the influence of climate and hydrologic setting on wetland biological communities. Although multidimensional, the wetland continuum is most easily represented as a two-dimensional gradient, with ground water and atmospheric water constituting the horizontal and vertical axes, respectively. By locating the position of a wetland on both axes of the continuum, the potential biological expression of the wetland can be predicted at any point in time. The model provides a framework useful in the organization and interpretation of biological data from wetlands by …

Unusual Behavior By Bison, Bison Bison, Toward Elk, Cervus Elaphus, And Wolves, Canis Lupus, L. David Mech, Rick T. Mcintyre, Douglas W. Smith
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Incidents are described of Bison (Bison bison) in Yellowstone National Park mauling and possibly killing a young Elk (Cervus elaphus) calf, chasing wolves (Canis lupus) off Elk they had just killed or were killing, and keeping the wolves away for extended periods. During one of the latter cases, the Bison knocked a wolf-wounded Elk down. Bison were also seen approaching wolves that were resting and sleeping, rousting them, following them to new resting places and repeating this behavior. These behaviors might represent some type of generalized hyper-defensiveness that functions as an anti-predator strategy.
Nutrient Reserves Of Lesser Scaup (Aythya Affinis) During Spring Migration In The Mississippi Flyway: A Test Of The Spring Condition Hypothesis, Michael Anteau, Alan Afton
Nutrient Reserves Of Lesser Scaup (Aythya Affinis) During Spring Migration In The Mississippi Flyway: A Test Of The Spring Condition Hypothesis, Michael Anteau, Alan Afton
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
The continental scaup population (Lesser [Aythya affinis] and Greater [A. marila ] combined) has declined markedly since 1978. One hypothesis for the population decline states that reproductive success has decreased because female scaup are arriving on breeding areas in poorer body condition than they did historically (i.e. spring condition hypothesis). We tested one aspect of that hypothesis by comparing body mass and nutrient reserves (lipid, protein, and mineral) of Lesser Scaup at four locations (Louisiana, Illinois, Minnesota, and Manitoba) between the 1980s and 2000s. We found that mean body mass and lipid and mineral reserves of females …

Does Presence Of Permanent Fresh Water Affect Recruitment In Prairie-Nesting Dabbling Ducks?, Gary Krapu, Pamela Pietz, David Brandt, Robert Cox Jr.
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
In the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of North Dakota, USA, American mink (Mustela vison) are a major predator of ducklings. Mink populations plummet during severe droughts, but some mink survive where permanent fresh water is available. In 1992–1993, we evaluated whether development of a permanent water body, the 125- km McClusky Canal (MC), had affected survival of gadwall (Anas strepera) and mallard (A. platyrhynchos) broods and ducklings in surrounding wetland complexes. Twelve of 25 radiomarked gadwall and mallard hens experienced total brood loss, and 148 of 199 radiomarked ducklings from 58 broods died by …

Transmission Of Neospora Caninum Between Wild And Domestic Animals, L. F. P. Gondim, M. M. Mcallister, N. E. Mateus-Pinilla, W. C. Pitt, L. D. Mech, M. E. Nelson
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
To determine whether deer can transmit Neospora caninum, brains of naturally infected white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were fed to 4 dogs; 2 of these dogs shed oocysts. Oocysts from 1 of the dogs were tested by polymerase chain reaction and found to be positive for N. caninum and negative for Hammondia heydorni. The internal transcribed spacer 1 sequence of the new strain (designated NC-deer1) was identical to N. caninum from domestic animals, indicating that N. caninum is transmitted between wild and domestic animals, often enough to prevent divergent evolution of isolated populations of the parasite. NC-deer1 …

Mammalian predation influences waterfowl breeding success in the U.S. northern Great Plains, yet little is known about the influence of the landscape on the ability of predators to find waterfowl nests. We used radiotelemetry to record nightly movements of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) in two 41.4-km2 study areas in North Dakota. Study areas contained either 15–20% grassland (low grassland composition) or 45–55% grassland (high grassland composition). Grasslands included planted cover, pastureland, and hayland. We predicted that the type and composition of cover types in the landscape would influence both predator …

Biology And Biological Control Of Purple Loosestrife, Linda M. Wilson, Mark Schwarzlaender, Bernd Blossey, Carol Bell Randall
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Purple loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria, is a member of the Loosestrife family (Lythraceae). It is a large, perennial, wetland plant that can grow up to 9 feet (3 m) tall. It was introduced to the northeastern United States and Canada in the 1800s from Europe, probably as seed contained in soil used as ship’s ballast. It was also brought to North America for ornamental and medicinal purposes.
