Colby College Watershed Study: Togus Pond (2004)

The Colby Environmental Assessment Team (CEAT) investigated the water quality and factors affecting water quality in the surrounding watershed of Togus Pond in Augusta, Maine from June through September 2004. CEAT analyzed several physical, chemical and biological water quality parameters, land use patterns in the watershed, and the impact of residential and commercial development on water quality. Data collected were used to produce models of the watershed that enabled CEAT to identify possible sources of degradation to the current and future water quality of Togus Pond. To obtain a historical perspective, all data collected this summer were compared to data …

Calcium And Glycolysis Mediate Multiple Bursting Modes In Pancreatic Islets, Richard Bertram, Leslie S. Satin, Min Zhang, Paul Smolen, Arthur Sherman Jan 2004

Calcium And Glycolysis Mediate Multiple Bursting Modes In Pancreatic Islets, Richard Bertram, Leslie S. Satin, Min Zhang, Paul Smolen, Arthur Sherman

Pharmacology and Toxicology Publications

Abstract

Pancreatic islets of Langerhans produce bursts of electrical activity when exposed to stimulatory glucose levels. These bursts often have a regular repeating pattern, with a period of 10–60 s. In some cases, however, the bursts are episodic, clustered into bursts of bursts, which we call compound bursting. Consistent with this are recordings of free Ca2+ concentration, oxygen consumption, mitochondrial membrane potential, and intraislet glucose levels that exhibit very slow oscillations, with faster oscillations superimposed. We describe a new mathematical model of the pancreatic β-cell that can account for these multimodal patterns. The model includes the feedback of …

Topcrop W.A. State Focus 2002-2003 Wheat Protein, Alison Slade, Jeremy Lemon Jan 2004

Topcrop W.A. State Focus 2002-2003 Wheat Protein, Alison Slade, Jeremy Lemon

Bulletins 4000 -

The State Focus program is supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) in conjunction with TOPCROP to provide grower groups with a new learning concept. The concept was developed in Victoria and has been adopted by South Australia and Western Australia.

Wheat protein was selected as the Western Australian State Focus in response to a wide-ranging consultation of grower groups, researchers and the TOPCROP West management group. As crop yield potential increases through matching varieties to growing season length, weed and disease control, and timely sowing systems, the crop’s demand for nitrogen increases. Unless the demand is matched …

En-Gendering The Police: Women's Police Stations And Feminism In São Paulo, Cecília Santos Jan 2004

En-Gendering The Police: Women's Police Stations And Feminism In São Paulo, Cecília Santos

Sociology

This article contributes to feminist state theory and studies of women's police stations in Latin America by examining the processes shaping the multiple and changing positions of explicit alliance, opposition, and ambiguous alliance assumed by policewomen regarding feminists since the creation of the world's first women's police station in 1985 in São Paulo. While studies of women's police stations tend to overlook the political conjuncture, much of the literature on the state and gender explains the relationship between the state and women's movements as a function of the political regime. I argue for a more grounded feminist state theory, taking …

Sensor And Electronic Biases/Errors In Air Temperature Measurements In Common Weather Station Networks*, X. Lin, Kenneth Hubbard Jan 2004

Sensor And Electronic Biases/Errors In Air Temperature Measurements In Common Weather Station Networks*, X. Lin, Kenneth Hubbard

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The biases of four commonly used air temperature sensors are examined and detailed. Each temperature transducer consists of three components: temperature sensing elements, signal conditioning circuitry, and corresponding analog-to-digital conversion devices or dataloggers. An error analysis of these components was performed to determine the major sources of error in common climate networks. It was found that, regardless of microclimate effects, sensor and electronic errors in air temperature measurements can be larger than those given in the sensor manufacturer’s specifications. The root-sum-of-squares (RSS) error for the HMP35C sensor with CR10X datalogger was above 0.2􏰆C, and rapidly increases for both lower (􏰋􏰂20􏰆C) …

Animal Anti–Apoptotic Genes Enhance Recovery From Drought Stress In Tobacco, Tala Awada, David D. Dunigan, Martin B. Dickman Jan 2004

Animal Anti–Apoptotic Genes Enhance Recovery From Drought Stress In Tobacco, Tala Awada, David D. Dunigan, Martin B. Dickman

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The anti–apoptotic nematode CED–9 gene and a 3’ non–coding mRNA region of the human Bcl–2 gene, referred to as 161–1, enhanced resistance to drought and recovery after re–watering in transgenic Nicotiana tabacum L. CV Glurk plants. The effect of drought on plant functions was investigated by withholding water from pots for 6, 8, 10 and 13 days. Results showed that controls and transgenic tobacco did not differ among each other under well–watered conditions. Differences appeared however, on day 3 of water deprivation, where controls exhibited a significantly steeper decline in photosynthesis (A) compared to the transgenic lines. On day 10 …

Remote Estimation Of Net Ecosystem Co2 Exchange In Crops: Principles, Technique Calibration And Validation, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Andrés Viña, Shashi Verma, Donald C. Rundquist, Timothy J. Arkebauer, Galina P. Keydan, Bryan Leavitt, Veronica Ciganda, George G. Burba, Andrew E. Suyker

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Accurate and synoptic estimation of spatially distributed CO2 fluxes is of great importance for regional and global studies of carbon balance. A technique solely based on remotely sensed data was developed and tested for estimating net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) in maize and soybean. The model is based on the reflectance in two spectral channels: the near-infrared and either the green or red-edge around 700 nm. The technique provides accurate estimations of mid-day NEE in both crops under either rainfed or irrigated conditions, explaining more than 85% of NEE variation in maize and more than 81% in soybean, and shows …

A Multistate Capture-Recapture Model Using A Posteriori Classification To Enhance Estimation Of Movement Rates, Larkin A. Powell Jan 2004

A Multistate Capture-Recapture Model Using A Posteriori Classification To Enhance Estimation Of Movement Rates, Larkin A. Powell

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Biologists commonly use multi state capture-recapture models to estimate movement and survival rates of animals. Recent improvements to genetic and stable-isotope techniques have created the potential for making a posteriori determinations of an animal's location. Here, I present a new multi state model structure that incorporates captured animals' backdated locations. To provide data for this model, I developed a computer simulation in which birds moved between two geographic strata during three time periods. Birds were captured and assigned mortality, and multi state capture histories were recorded. I enhanced capture histories for birds using data from simulated stable-isotope analyses. I then …

A Preservation Paradox: Political Prestidigitation And An Enduring Resource Of Wildness, Sandi Zellmer Jan 2004

A Preservation Paradox: Political Prestidigitation And An Enduring Resource Of Wildness, Sandi Zellmer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

The nation's preeminent preservation statute, the Wilderness Act of 1964, is now 40 years old. By authorizing a network of congressionally designated wilderness areas on public lands, the Act has proved invaluable for protecting special areas from the most intensive forms of intrusion by humankind But the Act is facing a midlife crisis, and legitimate questions have been raised about its continuing viability as a conservation tool. This Article concludes that the preservation of wild lands remains an essential component of federal public lands management, but that the Wilderness Act, standing alone, has not fulfilled its promise of securing an …

Does Size Matter? An Economic Analysis Of Small Business Exemptions From Regulation, C. Steven Bradford Jan 2004

Does Size Matter? An Economic Analysis Of Small Business Exemptions From Regulation, C. Steven Bradford

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

The author examines whether exemptions for small businesses and small transactions that appear in many regulations are economically efficient. The cost of regulation has both variable and fixed components. As demonstrated by many empirical studies of regulatory compliance costs, the fixed costs of regulation, and some of the variable costs, are subject to economies of scale that benefit larger firms and larger transactions. Though it is harder to measure the benefits of regulation, the benefits of regulation generally vary in proportion to the size of the regulated firm or transaction. The author develops a mathematical model of how the costs …

Forest Fragmentation And The Distribution, Abundance And Conservation Of The Tana River Red Colobus ( Procolobus Rufomitratus), David N.M. Mbora, Douglas B. Meikle Jan 2004

Forest Fragmentation And The Distribution, Abundance And Conservation Of The Tana River Red Colobus ( Procolobus Rufomitratus), David N.M. Mbora, Douglas B. Meikle

Biology

Evidence suggests that habitat heterogeneity, disturbance, disease, predation and food resources influence primate population abundance. However, few studies have focused on what habitat factors determine the probability that a primate species will occur in a habitat fragment. We analysed forest habitat and colobus population attributes to determine factors that influenced occurrence and abundance of the critically endangered Tana River red colobus. The probability of colobus inhabiting forests was positively related to the relative amount of habitat edge and canopy tree species composition. Most of the variance in the density of colobus monkeys was explained by basal area of food trees …

Competition Between Linear And Cyclic Structures In Monochromium Carbide Clusters Crcn- And Crcn (N=2-8): A Photoelectron Spectroscopy And Density Functional Study, Hua-Jin Zhai, Lai-Sheng Wang, P. Jena, G. L. Gutsev, C. W. Bauschlicher Jr.

Physics Publications

Photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) is combined with density functional theory (DFT) to study the monochromium carbide clusters CrC−n and CrCn (n=2–8). Well-resolved PES spectra were obtained, yielding structural, electronic, and vibrational information about both the anionic and neutral clusters. Experimental evidence was observed for the coexistence of two isomers for CrC−2, CrC−3, CrC−4, and CrC−6. Sharp and well-resolved PES spectra were observed for CrC−n (n=4,6,8), whereas broad spectra were observed for CrC−5 and CrC−7. Extensive DFT calculations using the generalized gradient approximation were carried out for the ground and low-lying excited states of all the CrC−n and CrCn species, as well …

Potential Effects Of Long-Lead Hydrologic Predictability On Missouri River Main-Stem Reservoirs, Edwin P. Maurer, Dennis P. Lettenmaier Jan 2004

Potential Effects Of Long-Lead Hydrologic Predictability On Missouri River Main-Stem Reservoirs, Edwin P. Maurer, Dennis P. Lettenmaier

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering

Understanding the links between remote conditions, such as tropical sea surface temperatures, and regional climate has the potential to improve streamflow predictions, with associated economic benefits for reservoir operation. Better definition of land surface moisture states (soil moisture and snow water storage) at the beginning of the forecast period provides an additional source of streamflow predictability. The value of long-lead predictive skill added by climate forecast information and land surface moisture states in the Missouri River basin is examined. Forecasted flows were generated that represent predictability achievable through knowledge of climate, snow, and soil moisture states. For the current main-stem …
