Reconsidering Attraction In Sexual Harassment, Martin J. Katz Jan 2004

Reconsidering Attraction In Sexual Harassment, Martin J. Katz

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

This Article will proceed in four parts. Part I explains the significance of the attraction-based view to the law of sexual harassment. This Part demonstrates not only how the attraction-based view provides a theoretical basis for treating workplace sexual conduct as a form of sex discrimination, but also how this view works in practice to provide relief for victims of workplace sexual conduct in a streamlined and effective manner. This Part articulates in a comprehensive manner how an attraction-based paradigm can be used to construct a theory by which plaintiffs can show that workplace sexual conduct has occurred "because of' …

A Conceptual Framework For E-Branding Strategies In The Non-Profit Sector, Horst Treiblmaier, Irene Pollach, Arne Floh, Marcin Kotlowski Jan 2004

A Conceptual Framework For E-Branding Strategies In The Non-Profit Sector, Horst Treiblmaier, Irene Pollach, Arne Floh, Marcin Kotlowski

Journal of International Information Management

Despite the economic significance non-profit organizations (NPOs) have acquired in recent years, the implications of the Internet for NPO marketing seem to have received only little attention from both researchers and practi tioners. Although NPO marketing has been the subject of academic research for more than 30 years, NPO brand'ing has been studied for just about 10 years (cf. Hankinson, 2001). Recent research on branding in the nonprofit s«:ctor includes, for example, an assessment of the impact of brand orientation on non-profit performance (Hanldnson, 2001; Hankinson, 2002) and the development of a non-profit brand orientation scale (Ewing and Napoli 200^1). …

A Velociraptorine Tooth From Alabama And Its Paleogeographic Implications, David R. Schwimmer

Faculty Bibliography

A single tooth recovered from the marine Mooreville Chalk Formation (Early Campanian) of western Alabama indicates the presence of dromaeosaurid theropods on the Appalachian subcontinent during the Late Cretaceous. The tooth compares closely with teeth referred to the small velociraptorine Saurornitholestes.

Self-Organizing Legal Systems: Precedent And Variation In Bankruptcy, Bernard Trujillo Jan 2004

Self-Organizing Legal Systems: Precedent And Variation In Bankruptcy, Bernard Trujillo

Law Faculty Publications

Models of legal ordering are frequently hierarchical. These models do not explain two prominent realities: (1) variation in the content of a legal system, and (2) patterns of non-hierarchical ordering that we observe. As a supplement to hierarchical explanations of legal order, this Article, drawing from physical and social science research on complex systems, offers a self-organizing model. The self-organizing model focuses on variation in the content of legal systems and attempts to explain the relationship between that variation and patterns of ordering. The self-organizing model demonstrates that variation and ordering are not opposite categories, but rather constitute one continuous …

Dramatic Decline Of Wild South China Tigers Panthera Tigris Amoyensis: Field Survey Of Priority Tiger Reserves, Ronald Tilson, Hu Defu, Jeff Muntifering, Philip J. Nyhus Jan 2004

Dramatic Decline Of Wild South China Tigers Panthera Tigris Amoyensis: Field Survey Of Priority Tiger Reserves, Ronald Tilson, Hu Defu, Jeff Muntifering, Philip J. Nyhus

Faculty Scholarship

This paper describes results of a Sino- American field survey seeking evidence of South China tigers Panthera tigris amoyensis in the wild. In 2001 and 2002 field surveys were conducted in eight reserves in five provinces identified by government authorities as habitat most likely to contain tigers. The surveys evaluated and documented evidence for the presence of tigers, tiger prey and habitat disturbance. Approximately 290 km of mountain trails were evaluated. Infrared remote cameras set up in two reserves captured 400 trap days of data. Thirty formal and numerous informal interviews were conducted with villagers to document wildlife knowledge, livestock …

Agroforestry, Elephants, And Tigers: Balancing Conservation Theory And Practice In Human-Dominated Landscapes Of Southeast Asia, Philip J. Nyhus, R L. Tilson Jan 2004

Agroforestry, Elephants, And Tigers: Balancing Conservation Theory And Practice In Human-Dominated Landscapes Of Southeast Asia, Philip J. Nyhus, R L. Tilson

Faculty Scholarship

Large mammal populations theoretically are best conserved in landscapes where large protected areas are surrounded by buffer zones, connected by corridors, and integrated into a greater ecosystem. Multi-use buffer zones, including those containing complex agroforestry systems, are promoted as one strategy to provide both economic benefits to people and conservation benefits to wildlife. We use the island of Sumatra, Indonesia to explore the benefits and limitations of this strategy. We conclude that conservation benefits are accrued by expanding the habitat available for large mammals but more attention needs to be focused on how to reduce and respond to human–wildlife conflict …

Characterizing Human-Tiger Conflict In Sumatra, Indonesia: Implications For Conservation, Philip J. Nyhus, Ronald Tilson Jan 2004

Characterizing Human-Tiger Conflict In Sumatra, Indonesia: Implications For Conservation, Philip J. Nyhus, Ronald Tilson

Faculty Scholarship

Human-tiger conflict occurs in Indonesia but there is little recent information about the scope of the problem, and adequate policies are not in place to address the conflict. Published and unpublished reports of conflict between Sumatran tigers Panthera tigris sumatrae, people and their livestock were collected and analysed to characterize the extent, distribution and impact of human-tiger actively conflict on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. Reportedly, between 1978 and 1997, tigers killed 146 people and injured 30, and killed at least 870 livestock. Conflict was less common in protected areas and more common in inter- mediate disturbance areas such as …
