Moderate Mutation Rate In The Sars Coronavirus Genome And Its Implications, Zhongming Zhao, Haipeng Li, Xiaozhuang Wu, Yixi Zhong, Keqin Zhang, Ya-Ping Zhang, Eric Boerwinkle, Yun-Xin Fu

Psychiatry Publications

Background The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) caused a severe global epidemic in 2003 which led to hundreds of deaths and many thousands of hospitalizations. The virus causing SARS was identified as a novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and multiple genomic sequences have been revealed since mid-April, 2003. After a quiet summer and fall in 2003, the newly emerged SARS cases in Asia, particularly the latest cases in China, are reinforcing a wide-spread belief that the SARS epidemic would strike back. With the understanding that SARS-CoV might be with humans for years to come, knowledge of the evolutionary mechanism of …

Watershed Study Results Offer Strategies For Reducing Erosion And Sedimentation Associated With Cattle Grazing, Lynn E. Moody Jan 2004

Watershed Study Results Offer Strategies For Reducing Erosion And Sedimentation Associated With Cattle Grazing, Lynn E. Moody

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

The Morro Bay estuary is arguably the most important wetland system on the south central coast of California. It supports commercial fishing industries, numerous recreation activities, and a variety of natural habitats. The estuary and its watershed, representing a diverse biological and economic resource to the people of California, are impacted by various pollutants, with sediment of particular concern. As part of a 10-year national monitoring program funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through California's Regional Water Quality Control Board (Regional Board), a paired watershed study on California Polytechnic State University's Escuela Ranch has shown that Best Management …

A Seasonality Study Of The West Virginia Stream Condition Index, Gene T. Hilton Iii Jan 2004

A Seasonality Study Of The West Virginia Stream Condition Index, Gene T. Hilton Iii

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The West Virginia Stream Condition Index (WVSCI) has not been rigorously tested for the effects of seasonal data collection. Scientific literature regarding seasonal impacts on biological indices is surprisingly limited. But most literature does agree that seasonal signals are small in comparison to variation between all possible biological conditions. Recently stream data have been collected from a full range of seasons by both West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and myself. In this study habitat, benthic macroinvertebrate data, and WVSCI values were analyzed for seasonality. For this reason multiple independent data sets were utilized. The analyses covered in this report …

The Lineage Model And Archaeological Data In Late Classic Northwestern Belize, Jon B. Hageman Jan 2004

The Lineage Model And Archaeological Data In Late Classic Northwestern Belize, Jon B. Hageman

Anthropology Faculty Publications

As central topics of anthropological study from the 1940s through the 1970s, kinship and lineage became largely discredited during the 1980s. Recent scholarship, however, has indicated that kinship and lineage, when considered as the products of social activity, can make important contributions to studies of living and past populations. This paper explores the lineage as a model of social organization distinguished by specific activities practiced by members of Late Classic Maya social groups. This model is derived from cross-cultural literature on lineages, but practices associated with lineage organization are historically and culturally specific. A suite of archaeological correlates, based on …

A New Subspecies Of Cicindela Nevadica Leconte (Coleoptera: Carbidae: Cicindelinae) From The Badlands Of South Dakota, Stephen M. Spomer Jan 2004

A New Subspecies Of Cicindela Nevadica Leconte (Coleoptera: Carbidae: Cicindelinae) From The Badlands Of South Dakota, Stephen M. Spomer

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

A new subspecies of Cicindela nevadica LeConte, Cicindela nevadica makosika Spomer, is described from the South Dakota Badlands. Geographically, the population occurs at the periphery of the range of C. nevadica knausii Leng. However, this new population is geographically isolated from the nearest C. n. knausii populations, which occur ca. 100 air miles north and over 100 air miles south. Phenotypically, C. n. makosika appears most similar to C. n. tubensis Cazier from northeast Arizona. A possible threat to this population is habitat destruction by cattle.

A Small Resident Community Of Bottlenose Dolphins, Tursiops Truncatus, In Texas: Monitoring Recommendations, Linda-Jane Irwin, Bernd Würsig

Gulf of Mexico Science

A small community of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in western Galveston Bay, Texas, was first studied in 1990 with subsequent study from 1995 through 2001. These animals showed strong site fidelity with seasonal variation in habitat use, From 1997 to 2001, three methods of assessing dolphin occurrence and abundance in this location were compared for efficiency and accuracy: photoidentification (photo-ID) for occurrence patterns and counts of individual animals; capture-recapture analyses from photo-ID data for abundance estimates; and line transect surveys for dolphin density estimates. Our line transect data were thought to be positively biased and that method is …

Age, Growth, Diet, And Reproductive Biology Of The Tripletail, Lobotes Surinamensis, From The North-Central Gulf Of Mexico, Andrew J. Strelcheck, Jered B. Jackson, James H. Cowan Jr., Robert L. Shipp

Gulf of Mexico Science

Tripletail, Lobotes surinamensis, are migratory fish that occur worldwide in warm seas, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. In the north-central Gulf of Mexico, tripletail support small recreational and commercial fisheries from April to Oct. and are commonly caught in bays and estuaries. Few studies have evaluated the life history and biological characteristics of tripletail; therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the age and growth, reproductive biology, and diet of tripletail caught off coastal Alabama. Our primary goal was to use life history information to determine. a minimum size limit for harvest. A secondary goal …

Abundance And Sizes Of Bay Scallops In Heterogeneous Habitats Along The Gulf Coast Of Florida, Jaime M. Greenawalt, Thomas K. Frazer, Stephanie R. Keller, Charles A. Jacoby Jan 2004

Abundance And Sizes Of Bay Scallops In Heterogeneous Habitats Along The Gulf Coast Of Florida, Jaime M. Greenawalt, Thomas K. Frazer, Stephanie R. Keller, Charles A. Jacoby

Gulf of Mexico Science

Southern bay scallops (Argopecten irradians concentricus) form the basis of a recreational fishery along Florida's Gulf Coast. Recent declines in scallop abundances have led to significant harvest restrictions. As a way to gain insight into influences on scallop abundances and size, surveys of bay scallops and coastal habitats were conducted in two relatively undisturbed, shallow estuaries along the north-central Gulf Coast of Florida. Scallop abundances did not vary significantly between years or between locations kilometers apart. Shell heights did vary significantly between years at locations kilometers apart; however, these differences were not consistently related to differences in chlorophyll …

Residence Patterns, Group Characteristics, And Association Patterns Of Bottlenose Dolphins Near Sanibel Island, Florida, Susan H. Shane Jan 2004

Residence Patterns, Group Characteristics, And Association Patterns Of Bottlenose Dolphins Near Sanibel Island, Florida, Susan H. Shane

Gulf of Mexico Science

A long-term, collaborative study of 385 individually recognizable bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) near Sanibel Island in southwestern Florida revealed an open, fluid population including year-round and seasonal residents and transients. Less than 10% of the identified dolphins were seen for 10 yr or more, and new dolphins were identified throughout the study. Dolphin sightings peaked in the spring when prey species moved from the offshore Gulf of Mexico into the bays and nearshore Gulf. Group size averaged 5.5 dolphins (n = 561, SD = 4.22), and the factor which influenced group size most was the presence or absence …

Abundance And Seasonal Occurrence Of Cetaceans In Outer Continental Shelf And Slope Waters Of The North-Central And Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Keith D. Mullin, Wayne Hoggard, Larry J. Hansen Jan 2004

Abundance And Seasonal Occurrence Of Cetaceans In Outer Continental Shelf And Slope Waters Of The North-Central And Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Keith D. Mullin, Wayne Hoggard, Larry J. Hansen

Gulf of Mexico Science

Eight aerial line-transect surveys of outer continental shelf and continental slope waters (range 100-2,000 m deep) were conducted seasonally from summer 1992 through spring 1994 in the north-central and northwestern Gulf of Mexico to study the seasonal occurrence and spatial distribution of cetaceans and to estimate their abundances. The surveys sampled an 85,815 km2 study area, resulting in 49,960 km of effort and sightings of at least 18 cetacean species and 365 cetacean groups. Eight species identified in four seasons included bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), pantropical spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata), Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus …

Growth Bands In Test Plates Of The Sea Urchins Arbacia Punctulata And Lytechinus Variegatus (Echinodermata) On The Central Florida Gulf Coast Shelf, Sophie K. Hill, Jason B. Aragona, John M. Lawrence

Gulf of Mexico Science

Growth bands in test plates provide information about the biology and ecology of sea urchins. We documented the bands in the test plates of Arbacia punctulata and Lytechinus variegatus at different seasons and locations on the central Florida Gulf Coast shelf. The number of growth bands in test plates is significantly correlated with test diameter for A. punctulata. The number of growth bands is not significantly correlated with test diameter for L. variegatus. The condition of the outermost growth band was recorded along with the month and reproductive state to investigate the effect of variation in reproduction and …

Remediating Rdx-Contaminated Ground Water With Permanganate: Laboratory Investigations For The Pantex Perched Aquifer, M. L. Adam, Steven Comfort, Matthew C. Morley, Daniel D. Snow

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

Ground water beneath the U.S. Department of Energy Pantex Plant is contaminated with the high explosive RDX (hexahydro-1,3,5- trinitro-1,3,5 triazine). The USDOE Innovative Treatment and Remediation Demonstration (ITRD) program identified in situ oxidation by permanganate as a technology fit for further investigation. We evaluated the efficacy of KMnO4 to transform and mineralize RDX by determining degradation kinetics and carbon mass balances using 14C-RDX. Aqueous RDX solutions (2–5 mg L–1) and RDX-contaminated slurries (50% solids, w/v) were treated with KMnO4 at 1000, 2000, 4000, and 20,000 mg L–1. Treating an aqueous RDX solution of …

Phenotypic And Genotypic Characterization Of Uromyces Appendiculatus From Phaseolus Vulgaris In The Americas, C. M. Araya, A. T. Alleyne, J. R. Steadman, Kent M. Eskridge, D. P. Coyne

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Populations of 90 Uromyces appendiculatus isolates were collected from throughout the Americas and evaluated for virulence on 19 standard bean rust differentials, and also on 12 landraces of Phaseolus vulgaris from South and Central America. The landrace differentials represented geographical centers of bean domestication. Three groups were observed. Two groups were isolates from centers of bean domestication and a third heterogeneous group comprised isolates from countries in South and Central America. Molecular analysis using random amplified polymorphic DNA–polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) was also conducted on these isolates. Cluster analysis of the molecular profiles showed three groups that corresponded to those …

Ideal Free Distributions, Evolutionary Games, And Population Dynamics In Multiple-Species Environments, Ross Cressman, Vlastimil Křivan, József Garay

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this article, we develop population game theory, a theory that combines the dynamics of animal behavior with population dynamics. In particular, we study interaction and distribution of two species in a two-patch environment assuming that individuals behave adaptively (i.e., they maximize Darwinian fitness). Either the two species are competing for resources or they are in a predator-prey relationship. Using some recent advances in evolutionary game theory, we extend the classical ideal free distribution (IFD) concept for single species to two interacting species. We study population dynamical consequences of two-species IFD by comparing two systems: one where individuals cannot migrate …

Epistemology And Education: An Incomplete Guide To The Social-Epistemological Issues, Harvey Siegel Jan 2004

Epistemology And Education: An Incomplete Guide To The Social-Epistemological Issues, Harvey Siegel

Philosophy Articles and Papers

Recent work in epistemology has focused increasingly on the social dimensions of knowledge and inquiry. Education is one important social arena in which knowledge plays a leading role, and in which knowledge-claims are presented, analyzed, evaluated, and transmitted. Philosophers of education have long attended to the epistemological issues raised by the theory and practice of education (along with the moral, metaphysical, social-political, and mind/language issues so raised). While historically philosophical issues concerning education were treated alongside other philosophical issues, in recent times the former set of issues have been largely neglected by philosophers working in the core areas of the …
