Libraries Stuck In The Middle: Reactive Vs. Proactive Responses To The Science Journal Crisis, Elaine Maytag Nowick, Claudine A. Jenda

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Libraries and the scholarly community share a dream of creating a world where scholarly articles are easily available on the Internet to everyone who wants them, without any fees, restrictions or barriers of any kind. What is preventing us from fulfilling such a noble and worthy goal? This paper examines selected case studies that show how libraries and scholars are coping with the science journal crisis. By highlighting responses that are innovative and proactive, this paper hopes to contribute to a general awareness of responses that have the potential for transforming the current scholarly communication process into an open, unimpeded, …

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Background Myocardial failure has a central role in the complex pathophysiology of septic shock and contributes to organ failure and death. During the sepsis-induced inflammatory process, specific factors are released that depress myocardial contractile function. We aimed to identify these mediators of myocardial depression in meningococcal septic shock.

Methods We combined gene-expression profiling with protein and cellular methods to identify a serum factor causing cardiac dysfunction in meningococcal septic shock. We identified genes that were significantly upregulated in blood after exposure to meningococci. We then selected for further analysis those genes whose protein products had properties of a myocardial depressant …

Partial Purification And Characterization Of A Methyl-Parathion Resistance-Associated General Esterase In Diabrotica Virgifera Virgifera (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Xuguo Zhou, Michael E. Scharf, Gautam Sarath, Lance J. Meinke, Laurence D. Chandler, Blair Siegfried Jan 2004

Partial Purification And Characterization Of A Methyl-Parathion Resistance-Associated General Esterase In Diabrotica Virgifera Virgifera (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Xuguo Zhou, Michael E. Scharf, Gautam Sarath, Lance J. Meinke, Laurence D. Chandler, Blair Siegfried

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Increased hydrolytic metabolism of organophosphate insecticides has been associated with resistance among Nebraska western corn rootworm populations. In this study, resistance-associated esterases were partially purified by differential centrifugation, ion exchange, and hydroxyapatite column chromatography, with a final purification factor of 100-fold and recovery of approximately 10%. Kinetic analysis of the partially purified enzyme indicated that the Km of the group II esterases was identical for the two populations, although Vmax was consistently threefold higher in the resistant population. A putative esterase, DvvII, was further purified to homogeneity by preparative polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. DvvII is a monomer with a …

Introduction To Online Ecological And Environmental Data, Virginia A. Baldwin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

The advent of the Internet and proliferation of materials on it has brought significant and rapid change in scholarly communication. Perhaps more gradually has come the posting of research data for sharing with other researchers in the field. This volume describes several projects that have made environmental and ecological researchers' data freely available online. Librarians from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the United States Geological Survey (USGS), from one regional agency based in Oregon, one university, and one research corporation describe aspects of the online data projects developed by their respective institutions. A sixth paper, from a librarian …

Androgen Receptor Expression In The Rat Prostate Is Down-Regulated By Dietary Phytoestrogens, Edwin D. Lephart, Trent D. Lund, Daniel J. Munson, Herman Aldercreutz, Robert J. Handa Jan 2004

Androgen Receptor Expression In The Rat Prostate Is Down-Regulated By Dietary Phytoestrogens, Edwin D. Lephart, Trent D. Lund, Daniel J. Munson, Herman Aldercreutz, Robert J. Handa

Faculty Publications

Background- It is well established that the growth of the prostate gland is a hormone-dependent phenomenon involving both androgenic and estrogenic control. Proliferation of prostate cells is, at least in part, under control of estrogen receptor beta (ER-beta). Phytoestrogens bind ER-beta with high affinity and therefore may have antiproliferative effects in the prostate. Methods- The prostates of male Long-Evans rats fed a diet high in phytoestrogens (Phyto-600) or very low levels of phytoestrogens (Phyto-free) were analyzed to determine the impact of dietary phytoestrogens on prostate weight and androgen receptor (AR) expression in the prostate. Results- Dietary phytoestrogens significantly decreased post-pubertal …

Chronic Wasting Disease Management In Nebraska Jan 2004

Chronic Wasting Disease Management In Nebraska

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

The presence of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in free-roaming and domesticated cervine animal populations of deer and elk in the state of Nebraska presents a threat to the natural resources of the state. The presence of this disease could drastically restrict the successful achievement of the goals and objectives of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) as set forth in their long range plan “Focusing on the Future…A Plan for Nebraska’s Fish, Wildlife and Parkland Resources”. Objective 3 in the Big Game section of this plan is to “Monitor the status and health of deer, so reasonable assumptions may …

Energy Conserving Approximations To The Quantum Potential: Dynamics With Linearized Quantum Force, Sophya Garashchuk, Vitaly A. Rassolov Jan 2004

Energy Conserving Approximations To The Quantum Potential: Dynamics With Linearized Quantum Force, Sophya Garashchuk, Vitaly A. Rassolov

Faculty Publications

Solution of the Schrödinger equation within the de Broglie–Bohm formulation is based on propagation of trajectories in the presence of a nonlocal quantum potential. We present a new strategy for defining approximate quantum potentials within a restricted trial function by performing the optimal fit to the log-derivatives of the wave function density. This procedure results in the energy-conserving dynamics for a closed system. For one particular form of the trial function leading to the linear quantum force, the optimization problem is solved analytically in terms of the first and second moments of the weighted trajectory distribution. This approach gives exact …

Freeing The Innocent: A Proposed Forensic Evidence Retention Statute To Optiie Utah's Post-Conviction Dna Testing Act For Claims Of Actual Innocence, Ted S. Reed Jan 2004

Freeing The Innocent: A Proposed Forensic Evidence Retention Statute To Optiie Utah's Post-Conviction Dna Testing Act For Claims Of Actual Innocence, Ted S. Reed

Utah Law Review

Since 1993, post-conviction DNA testing has proven itself to be a valuable systemic safeguard against punishing the innocent. Post-conviction DNA testing has now exonerated at least one hundred and forty-three Americans. At least twelve of these exonerated citizens were at one time on death row. Virtually all had exhausted their appeals and post-conviction remedies. Only their serendipitous rescue by DNA testing saved them from execution. Collectively, these one hundred and forty-three innocent Americans served more than 1397 years in prison.

Hydrogen Peroxide In Deep Waters Of The North Pacific Ocean, Jinchun Yuan, Alan M. Shiller Jan 2004

Hydrogen Peroxide In Deep Waters Of The North Pacific Ocean, Jinchun Yuan, Alan M. Shiller

Faculty Publications

Hydrogen peroxide is a reactive oxygen intermediate that can play a role in a variety of redox cycles. In the ocean, it is generally considered to be dominantly photo-produced with negligible concentrations in deep waters. We have utilized a highly sensitive analytical method to investigate hydrogen peroxide in deep waters of the North Pacific Ocean. We present evidence that hydrogen peroxide exists in low nanomolar concentrations in these deep waters with an apparent minimum in the depth range of the oxygen minimum. A consideration of possible mechanisms and rates suggests both a short (similar to12 day) residence time as well …

5-Aminoimidazole-4-Carboxamide-1-Β-4-Ribofuranoside Inhibits Proinflammatory Response In Glial Cells: A Possible Role Of Amp-Activated Protein Kinase, Shailendra Giri, Narendra Nath, Brian Smith, Benoit Viollet, Avtar K. Singh, Inderjit Singh

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is tightly regulated by the cellular AMP:ATP ratio and plays a central role in the regulation of energy homeostasis and metabolic stress. A pharmacological activator of AMPK, 5-amino-4-imidazole carboxamide riboside (AICAR) inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced expression of proinflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-6) and inducible nitric oxide synthase in primary rat astrocytes, microglia, and peritoneal macrophages. AICAR attenuates the LPS-induced activation of nuclear factor κB via downregulation of IκB kinase α/β activity. It also inhibits nuclear translocation of CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein (C/EBP) transcription factor by inhibiting the expression of C/EBP-δ in brain glial cells. The …

Estimation Of Carbon Sequestration By Combining Remote Sensing And Net Ecosystem Exchange Data For Northern Mixed-Grass Prairie And Sagebrush–Steppe Ecosystems, E. Raymond Hunt Jr., Robert D. Kelly, William K. Smith, Jace T. Fahnestock, Jeffrey M. Welker, William A. Reiners Jan 2004

Estimation Of Carbon Sequestration By Combining Remote Sensing And Net Ecosystem Exchange Data For Northern Mixed-Grass Prairie And Sagebrush–Steppe Ecosystems, E. Raymond Hunt Jr., Robert D. Kelly, William K. Smith, Jace T. Fahnestock, Jeffrey M. Welker, William A. Reiners

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Carbon sequestration was estimated a northern mixed-grass prairie site and a sagebrush–steppe site in southeastern Wyoming using an approach that integrates remote sensing, CO2 flux measurements, and meteorological data. Net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of CO2 was measured using aircraft and ground flux techniques and was linearly related to absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR). The slope of this relationship is the radiation use efficiency (ε = 0.51 g C/MJ APAR); there were no significant differences in the regression coefficients between the two sites. Furthermore, ecosystem chamber measurements of total respiration in 1998 and 1999 were used to develop …

Inhibition Of Bovine T Lymphocyte Responses By Extracts Of The Stomach Worm Ostertagia Ostertagi, M.T. Gómez-Muñoz, A. Canals-Caballero, S. Almeria, P. Pasquali, D.S. Zarlenga, L.C. Gasbarre

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Lowered immune responses during bovine ostertagiosis have been reported in both in vivo and in vitro assay systems. In the present study we have employed three different life cycle stages of the ne- matode Ostertagia ostertagi to determine if products of this economically important parasite inhibit in vitro proliferation of Con A-stimulated cells from uninfected animals. We have demonstrated an inhibitory effect upon the growth of Con A-stimulated lymphocytes after addition of fourth stage larval (L4) soluble extract (L4SE) to the cultures. In contrast, extracts from the third stage larvae (L3) had little or no inhibitory activity. The suppressive products …
