Walking And Running In The Red-Legged Running Frog, Kassina Maculata, Anna N. Ahn, E Furrow, Andrew A. Biewener

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Although most frog species are specialized for jumping or swimming, Kassina maculata (red-legged running frog) primarily uses a third type of locomotion during which the hindlimbs alternate. In the present study, we examined Kassina's distinct locomotory mode to determine whether these frogs walk or run and how their gait may change with speed. We used multiple methods to distinguish between terrestrial gaits: the existence or absence of an aerial phase, duty factor, relative footfall patterns and the mechanics of the animal's center of mass (COM). To measure kinematic and kinetic variables, we recorded digital video as the animals moved …

Limited Conformational Space For Early-Stage Protein Folding Simulation, M. Bryliński, W. Jurkowski, L. Konieczny, I. Roterman

Faculty Publications

Motivation: The problem of early-stage protein folding is critical for protein structure prediction. The model presented introduces a common definition of protein structures which may be treated as the possible in silico early-stage form of the polypeptide chain. Limitation of the conformational space to the ellipse path on the Ramachandran map was tested as a possible sub-space to represent the early-stage structure for simulation of protein folding. The proposed conformational sub-space was developed on the basis of the backbone conformation, with side-chain interactions excluded. Results: The ellipse-path-limited conformation of BPTI was created using the criterion of shortest distance between Phi, …

Identifying Character Non-Independence In Phylogenetic Data Using Data Mining Techniques, Jennifer Leopold, Anne M. Maglia, M. Thakur, B. Patel, Fikret ErçAl Jan 2004

Identifying Character Non-Independence In Phylogenetic Data Using Data Mining Techniques, Jennifer Leopold, Anne M. Maglia, M. Thakur, B. Patel, Fikret ErçAl

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Undiscovered relationships in a data set may confound analyses, particularly those that assume data independence. Such problems occur when characters used for phylogenetic analyses are not independent of one another. A main assumption of phylogenetic inference methods such as maximum likelihood and parsimony is that each character serves as an independent hypothesis of evolution. When this assumption is violated, the resulting phylogeny may not reflect true evolutionary history. Therefore, it is imperative that character non-independence be identified prior to phylogenetic analyses. To identify dependencies between phylogenetic characters, we applied three data mining techniques: 1) Bayesian networks, 2) decision tree induction, …

Ability Of Cidrs Or Melengestrol Acetate To Initiate Estrous Cycles In Early Postpartum Beef Cows, G. A. Perry, T. W. Geary Jan 2004

Ability Of Cidrs Or Melengestrol Acetate To Initiate Estrous Cycles In Early Postpartum Beef Cows, G. A. Perry, T. W. Geary

South Dakota Beef Report, 2004

Postpartum anestrous interval in beef cows is a major factor contributing to reproductive failure during a defined breeding season. Our objectives were to determine the ability of a controlled internal drug-releasing device (CIDR), or melengestrol acetate (MGA) to induce ovulation and to eliminate short estrous cycles. Multiparous beef cows (n = 75) were equally assigned by age, days postpartum, body condition, and body weight to one of three treatments: CIDR, MGA, or control. All cows were fed carrier (2 lbs•cow-1•day-1) with MGA (0.25 mg/lb) or without MGA for 7 days (day -6 to 0). On day -6, CIDR were inserted …

Faculty Publications

The determination of cysteine and homocysteine levels is of great current interest for the monitoring of desease states. A new colorimetric method for the simultaneous detection of L-cysteine and L-homocysteine has been developed. A fluorescein derivative reacts with the above amino acids, producing their respective thiazolidines resulting in color changes. Interference from other amino acids and proteins is minimal. Exonerated By Dna After 16 Years In Prison, Donald E. Wilkes Jr. Jan 2004

Exonerated By Dna After 16 Years In Prison, Donald E. Wilkes Jr.

Popular Media

Since 1973 a total of 114 innocent persons sentenced to death in 25 states have been exonerated and released from death row, many after being imprisoned for a decade or more, and some after narrowly avoiding execution by only a few days. (Five of the exonerees--Jerry Banks, Earl Charles, James Edward Creamer, Gary X. Nelson, and Robert Lewis Wallace--were Georgia death row inmates.) In addition, since 1989 no less than 138 innocent convicted persons (including some of the 114 death row exonerees) have been exonerated and released from prison due to the efforts of the New York-based Innocence Project, a …

Closterovirus Bipolar Virion: Evidence For Initiation Of Assembly By Minor Coat Protein And Its Restriction To The Genomic Rna 5' Region, Satyanarayana Tatineni, Siddarame Gowda, Maria A. Ayllon, William O. Dawson Jan 2004

Dawson

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The long flexuous virions of the Closteroviridae have a unique bipolar architecture incorporating two coat proteins, with most of the helical nucleocapsid encapsidated by the major coat protein (CP) and a small portion of one end encapsidated by the minor coat protein (CPm). It is not known whether CPm encapsidates the genomic RNA and, if so, which end and what effects transition between the two coat proteins. Two other virus-encoded proteins, an HSP70 homolog (HSP70h) and an = 61-kDa protein, are required to augment virion assembly. In this work, we examine the in vivo encapsidation of Citrus tristeza virus by …

Genetic Engineering Of Plant Chloroplasts, Henry Daniell, Bruce Mcfadden Jan 2004

Genetic Engineering Of Plant Chloroplasts, Henry Daniell, Bruce Mcfadden

UCF Patents

Novel chimeric constructions and methods for their use are provided for expression of exogenous genes in a plant chloroplast. Particularly, expression is achieved by the use of a chloroplast or bacterial 5' untranslated region in the expression cassette. The expression cassette may be integrated into the chloroplast genome by the use of chloroplast DNA flanking sequences, or may replicate autonomously if provided with a chloroplast origin of replication. Plants and cells containing the transformed chloroplasts are also provided. The constructs may be used with both monocotyledenous and dicotyledenous chloroplasts.

Trans-Snare Interactions Elicit Ca2+ Efflux From The Yeast Vacuole Lumen, Alexey J. Merz, William T. Wickner Jan 2004

Trans-Snare Interactions Elicit Ca2+ Efflux From The Yeast Vacuole Lumen, Alexey J. Merz, William T. Wickner

Dartmouth Scholarship

Ca2+ transients trigger many SNARE-dependent membrane fusion events. The homotypic fusion of yeast vacuoles occurs after a release of lumenal Ca2+. Here, we show that trans-SNARE interactions promote the release of Ca2+ from the vacuole lumen. Ypt7p-GTP, the Sec1p/Munc18-protein Vps33p, and Rho GTPases, all of which function during docking, are required for Ca2+ release. Inhibitors of SNARE function prevent Ca2+ release. Recombinant Vam7p, a soluble Q-SNARE, stimulates Ca2+ release. Vacuoles lacking either of two complementary SNAREs, Vam3p or Nyv1p, fail to release Ca2+ upon tethering. Mixing these two vacuole populations together allows Vam3p and Nyv1p to interact in trans and …
