A Crowded House: Socioeconomics (And Other) Additions To The Law School And Economics Curricula, Thomas S. Ulen Feb 2004

A Crowded House: Socioeconomics (And Other) Additions To The Law School And Economics Curricula, Thomas S. Ulen

San Diego Law Review

In this Article, the author remarks on two developments in the teaching of law and economics in the North American legal academy. First, a paradoxical trend: as law and economics becomes more firmly accepted among legal scholars, the need for separate courses on law and economics may decline. Second, the legal academy is developing important independent literature in law and economics. Ulen argues that as law and economics has become more influential and pervasive, the popularity of separate courses has declined, and the difficulty of fitting more into the curriculum has increased.

The Biodiversity And Biogeochemistry Of Cryoconite Holes From Mcmurdo Dry Valley Glaciers, Antarctica, Dorota L. Porazinska, Andrew G. Fountain, Thomas H. Nylen, Martyn Tranter, Ross A. Virginia, Diana H. Wall

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Once thought of as inert, ice has been increasingly recognized as a habitat suitable for life. The landscape of the MCMurdo Dry Valleys (MCM) of Antarctica is dominated by glaciers, and glacier melt is the primary water source for life in soils, streams, and lakes. The glaciers, despite their cold and lifeless appearance, offer functioning habitats for life. The major objective of this study was to examine biogeochemical characteristics of miniecosystems present in cryoconite holes and to determine links to other components (soils, streams, and lakes) of the dry valley landscape. We examined cryoconite holes from 5 glaciers spanning the …

Christian Anti-Semitism: Past History, Present Challenges: Reflections In Light Of Mel Gibson's The Passion Of The Christ, John T. Pawlikowski Feb 2004

Christian Anti-Semitism: Past History, Present Challenges: Reflections In Light Of Mel Gibson's The Passion Of The Christ, John T. Pawlikowski

Journal of Religion & Film

A contemporary film on anti-Semitism describes this centuries-long social disease as a "shadow" over the cross. Recent Catholic documents have spoken in even stronger language. In 1989 the Pontifical Commission for Justice and Peace insisted that "Harboring racist thoughts and entertaining racist attitudes is a sin." And it clearly included anti-Semitism in its list of continuing manifestations of racist ideologies that are to be regarded as sinful. In point of fact, it terms anti-Semitism "the most tragic form that racist ideology has assumed in our century." My assignment here today is to present an overview of post biblical anti-Semitism, following …

The Use Of A Water Quality Model To Evaluate The Impacts Of Combined Sewer Overflows On The Lower Hudson River, Wen-Pin Shu Jan 2004

The Use Of A Water Quality Model To Evaluate The Impacts Of Combined Sewer Overflows On The Lower Hudson River, Wen-Pin Shu

Dissertations

CSO discharges have long been recognized as a significant source of water pollution. While many sources of water pollution have been controlled over the past 20 years, CSOs continue to be a main environmental concern in several areas, especially in old cities. In the past, most CSO research focused on the CSO control processes, including floatables and suspended solids removal. Few studies have been conducted in the area of the impacts of CSO discharge on the receiving water quality. To achieve this purpose, a powerful water-modeling tool, WASP 6.1, is utilized in this study. The Lower Hudson River is selected …

Multi-Spectral Light Interaction Modeling And Imaging Of Skin Lesions, Sachin Vidyanand Patwardhan Jan 2004

Multi-Spectral Light Interaction Modeling And Imaging Of Skin Lesions, Sachin Vidyanand Patwardhan

Dissertations

Nevoscope as a diagnostic tool for melanoma was evaluated using a white light source with promising results. Information about the lesion depth and its structure will further improve the sensitivity and specificity of melanoma diagnosis. Wavelength-dependent variable penetration power of monochromatic light in the trans-illumination imaging using the Nevoscope can be used to obtain this information. Optimal selection of wavelengths for multi-spectral imaging requires light-tissue interaction modeling. For this, three-dimensional wavelength dependent voxel-based models of skin lesions with different depths are proposed. A Monte Carlo simulation algorithm (MCSVL) is developed in MATLAB and the tissue models are simulated using the …

Dielectrophoretic Manipulation Of Biological And Non-Biological Analytes In A Microfluidic Channel, Dawn J. Bennett Jan 2004

Dielectrophoretic Manipulation Of Biological And Non-Biological Analytes In A Microfluidic Channel, Dawn J. Bennett

Dissertations

Micro-total-analytical systems (μTASs) for analyzing chemical/biological substances are now used across a wide variety of applications ranging from biological warfare agent detection to the healthcare industry. The first step in the operation of a μTAS consists of concentrating and separating the analytes of interest from the background matrix and positioning them into selected locations for subsequent analysis. The use of ac electric fields was demonstrated to have promising potential for a μTAS because the application of an ac field suppresses undesirable electrolytic effects in the liquid. The main purpose of this work is to study micro-scale phenomena in a flowing …

Investigation Of Heart Rate Variability During Sleep Apnea, Sekar Subramanian Jan 2004

Investigation Of Heart Rate Variability During Sleep Apnea, Sekar Subramanian

Theses

Sleep apnea is a disorder, where there are repetitive pauses in respiratory flow of at least 10 seconds or longer duration, and which occur more than five times per hour. Apnea has strong modulating effects on the autonomic nervous system, with prominent heart rate variation. It can be assumed that during sleep, internal influences (sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system activities) dominate the autonomic nervous system; in addition repetitive apneas are accompanied by a pronounced increase in average heart rate. The aim of this study was to investigate the heart rate variability using spectral analysis and time-frequency analysis during sleep apnea. …

Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Polymeric Films, Chi Yu Jan 2004

Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Polymeric Films, Chi Yu

Theses

Poly-peri-naphthalene (PPN) is a one-dimensional (1 -D) graphite polymer with unique planar ladder-like conjugated molecular structure. PPN was predicted to be a good intrinsic conductor and have high thermal stability and high environmental stability.

In this project, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) of carbon films with PPN structure using PTCDA as precursor were carried out under different conditions. There is only limited information in literature on the synthesis of PPN films by PECVD process, which may allow deposition at a higher rate with lower substrate temperature. In this work the influence of deposition parameters, …

An Analysis Of The Periodicity Of The Cell Cycle And Apoptotic Regulatory Proteins In Prostate Xenografts Using Anova And Cosinor Methods, Aleen Hosdaghian Jan 2004

An Analysis Of The Periodicity Of The Cell Cycle And Apoptotic Regulatory Proteins In Prostate Xenografts Using Anova And Cosinor Methods, Aleen Hosdaghian

Theses

Circadian rhythms have been found in both plants and animals, in normal tissues as well as in most tumors and human cancers. By following these rhythms in healthy and cancerous tissue, it has been possible to find optimal times to deliver a dose of drug, such that efficacy is maximized and toxicity to normal tissues is minimized. In this study, the periodicity of several cell cycle and apoptotic regulatory proteins were studied in two prostate cancer models against a dietary therapeutic agent, Selenium. The ALVA-3 1 (androgen-independent) and PC-3 (androgen-independent) prostate cancer cell lines were grown in vivo, as a …

Magneto-Rheological Fluid Orthosis For Suppressing Tremor, Hyoung-Joo Yeo Jan 2004

Magneto-Rheological Fluid Orthosis For Suppressing Tremor, Hyoung-Joo Yeo

Theses

Tremor is a common movement disorder that occurs with specific neurological conditions. This condition may seriously impact daily living activities. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the possibility of the development of a wearable technology that is capable of exerting torques at a user's joints for suppressing tremor.

This thesis is based on the concept of "smart structures" which are made of Magneto-Rheological (MR) fluid that can dynamically alter its viscosity under magnetic field. The wearable tremor suppressing orthosis needs several conditions. It should be safe, light weight, simple and small in structure, and easily attachable. An …

Theses

The thermochemical properties on CH3SCH2OOH and the corresponding two radicals resulting from loss of H atom: CH3SCH2OO and CH2SCH2OOH are important to understand the stability, reaction paths and kinetics of reactions of dimethyl sulfide and other sulfur hydrocarbons (sulfides) in the atmosphere and combustion processes. Thermochemical properties for species and transition states in the methylthiomethyl radical (CH3SCH2) + O2 reaction system are analyzed to evaluate reaction paths and kinetics under these conditions. Isodesmic working reaction are employed to determine the enthalpies of formation …

Phylogenetic Revision Of Leptodesma (Leiopteria) (Devonian: Bivalvia), Alycia L. Rode Jan 2004

Phylogenetic Revision Of Leptodesma (Leiopteria) (Devonian: Bivalvia), Alycia L. Rode

Postilla

The phylogenetic relationships of Middle and Late Devonian species of the subgenus Leptodesma (Leiopteria) Hall 1883 are examined cladistically and a taxonomic revision of the subgenus is proposed. Six taxa previously afforded species rank are synonymized with Leptodesma (Leiopteria) laevis (Hall 1843). One new species, Leptodesma (Leiopteria) accranus, is described from the Lower to Middle Devonian of Ghana. Biogeographic analysis of the subgenus reveals less vicariant speciation than speciation associated with range expansion and dispersal. This pattern has been observed in trilobites and phyllocarid crustaceans and may represent a general pattern during the Middle and Late Devonian. Extensive range expansion …

Why We Need The Independent Sector: The Behavior, Law, & Ethics Of Not-For-Profit Hospitals, Jill R. Horwitz Jan 2004

Why We Need The Independent Sector: The Behavior, Law, & Ethics Of Not-For-Profit Hospitals, Jill R. Horwitz

Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009

Among the major forms of corporate ownership, the not-for-profit ownership form is distinct in its behavior, legal constraints, and moral obligations. A new empirical analysis of the American hospital industry, using eleven years of data for all urban general hospitals in the country, shows that corporate form accounts for large differences in the provision of specific medical services. Not-for-profit hospitals systematically provide both private and public goods that are in the public interest, and that other forms fail to provide. Two hypotheses are proposed to account for the findings, one legal and one moral. While no causal claims are made, …
