Invasion Of The Clones: Animal Cloning And The Potential Implications On The Future Of Human Cloning And Cloning Legislation In The United States, The United Kingdom, And Internationally, Adrienne N. Calhoun

ExpressO

Cloning is an area of science that changes daily; with advances being made constantly. This technology has caused great controversy in the United States and across the world. The issue has raised religious, ethical, technical and legal concerns. This paper is broken into four parts in order to best address the complex area of cloning technology. Part one will be a review of the history of the science of cloning and the history of animal cloning. Part two will be a discussion of the risks and benefits of cloning. United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The aim of this study was to identify changes in bovine macrophage gene expression in response to treatment with Escherichia coli 0157:H7 lipopolysaccharide (LPS), utilizing a human gene microarray. Bovine cDNA from control and LPStreated primary macrophages hybridized to greater than 5644 (79.8%) of the non-control gene targets on a commercially available microarray containing greater than 7075 targets (Incyte Genomics, St. Louis, MO). Of these target sequences, 44 were differentially expressed upon exposure to LPS, including 18 genes not previously reported to exist in cattle. These included a pentaxin-related gene, CASP8, TNF-induced genes, interferon-induced genes, and inhibitors of apoptosis. Using …

Extending The Oniom Integrated Mo/Mo Approach To Hydrogen Bonding In Biologic Systems: Serine-Water And Threonine-Water Dimers, Brian W. Hopkins, Gregory S. Tschumper Feb 2004

Extending The Oniom Integrated Mo/Mo Approach To Hydrogen Bonding In Biologic Systems: Serine-Water And Threonine-Water Dimers, Brian W. Hopkins, Gregory S. Tschumper

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

A series of two-layer ONIOM (MO:MO) methods have been systematically applied to two biologically important hydrogen-bonded dimers. Single conformations of the serine-water dimer and of the threonine-water dimer were optimized with the MP2 technique and a DZP++ basis set. The counterpoise corrected and uncorrected dissociation energies of the dimers were then computed with RHF, B3LYP, MP2, and CCSD(T) electronic structure techniques with 3-21G, 6-31+G(d), and DZP++ basis sets as well as every possible two-layer ONIOM permutation using either CCSD(T)/DZP++ or MP2/DZP++ as the high-level method. To judge the performance of each technique, the data are compared to results obtained with …
