Age-Of-Dam Adjustment Factors For Birth And Weaning Weight Records Of Beef Cattle: A Review, Janice M. Rumpf, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Age-of-dam adjustment factors are used to pre-adjust birth and weaning weight data for national beef cattle genetic evaluations. Adjustments are used in order to make the means of the different age-of-dam subclasses similar so that a fair comparison of animals can be performed. A review was made of various research studies that have estimated age-of-dam adjustment factors for birth weight and weaning weight of beef cattle. In general, birth weight age-of-dam adjustment factors are the same across the sexes, but weaning weight age-of-darn adjustment factors differ across the sexes, with heifer calves receiving smaller adjustments than their male counterparts. Additionally, …

Heparanase Degrades Syndecan-1 And Perlecan Heparan Sulfate: Functional Implications For Tumor Cell Invasion, Jane Reiland, Ralph D. Sanderson, Marian Waguespack, Steven A. Barker, Robert Long, Daniel D. Carson, Dario Marchetti Feb 2004

Heparanase Degrades Syndecan-1 And Perlecan Heparan Sulfate: Functional Implications For Tumor Cell Invasion, Jane Reiland, Ralph D. Sanderson, Marian Waguespack, Steven A. Barker, Robert Long, Daniel D. Carson, Dario Marchetti

Faculty Publications

Heparanase (HPSE-1) is involved in the degradation of both cell-surface and extracellular matrix (ECM) heparan sulfate (HS) in normal and neoplastic tissues. Degradation of heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPG) in mammalian cells is dependent upon the enzymatic activity of HPSE-1, an endo-β -D-glucuronidase, which cleaves HS using a specific endoglycosidic hydrolysis rather than an eliminase type of action. Elevated HPSE-1 levels are associated with metastatic cancers, directly implicating HPSE-1 in tumor progression. The mechanism of HPSE-1 action to promote tumor progression may involve multiple substrates because HS is present on both cell-surface and ECM proteoglycans. However, the specific targets of HPSE-1 …

Brain Tumor Target Volume Determination For Radiation Therapy Treatment Planning Through The Use Of Automated Mri Segmentation, Gloria Patrika Mazzara Feb 2004

Brain Tumor Target Volume Determination For Radiation Therapy Treatment Planning Through The Use Of Automated Mri Segmentation, Gloria Patrika Mazzara

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Radiation therapy seeks to effectively irradiate the tumor cells while minimizing the dose to adjacent normal cells. Prior research found that the low success rates for treating brain tumors would be improved with higher radiation doses to the tumor area. This is feasible only if the target volume can be precisely identified. However, the definition of tumor volume is still based on time-intensive, highly subjective manual outlining by radiation oncologists. In this study the effectiveness of two automated Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) segmentation methods, k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN) and Knowledge-Guided (KG), in determining the Gross Tumor Volume (GTV) of brain tumors …

Specific Excision Of The Selenocysteine Trna [Ser]Sec (Trsp) Gene In Mouse Liver Demonstrates An Essential Role Of Selenoproteins In Liver Function, Bradley A. Carlson, Sergey V. Novoselov, Easwari Kumaraswamy, Byeong Jae Lee, Miriam R. Anver, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Selenium is essential in mammalian embryonic development. However, in adults, selenoprotein levels in several organs including liver can be substantially reduced by selenium deficiency without any apparent change in phenotype. To address the role of selenoproteins in liver function, mice homozygous for a floxed allele encoding the selenocysteine (Sec) tRNA [Ser]Sec gene were crossed with transgenic mice carrying the Cre recombinase under the control of the albumin promoter that expresses the recombinase specifically in liver. Recombination was nearly complete in mice 3 weeks of age, whereas liver selenoprotein synthesis was virtually absent, which correlated with the loss of Sec tRNA …

The Identity Of Proteins Associated With A Small Heat Shock Protein During Heat Stress In Vivo Indicates That These Chaperones Protect A Wide Range Of Cellular Functions, Eman Basha, Garrett J. Lee, Linda A. Breci, Andrew C. Hausrath, Nicole R. Buan, Kim C. Giese, Elizabeth Vierling Feb 2004

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

The small heat shock proteins (sHSPs) are a ubiquitous class of ATP-independent chaperones believed to prevent irreversible protein aggregation and to facilitate subsequent protein renaturation in cooperation with ATP-dependent chaperones. Although sHSP chaperone activity has been studied extensively in vitro, understanding the mechanism of sHSP function requires identification of proteins that are sHSP substrates in vivo. We have used both immunoprecipitation and affinity chromatography to recover 42 proteins that specifically interact with Synechocystis Hsp16.6 in vivo during heat treatment. These proteins can all be released from Hsp16.6 by the ATP-dependent activity of DnaK and cochaperones and are heat-labile. Thirteen …

Moisture--Temperature Management During Alfalfa Hay And Silage Making & Storing, Michael Collins Feb 2004

Moisture--Temperature Management During Alfalfa Hay And Silage Making & Storing, Michael Collins

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

In some areas of the country, producers store a substantial portion of their forage for winter feeding as silage or haylage. However, hay remains the most popular storage method for forage. Hay stores well for long periods and is better suited to cash sale and transportation than silage. Mechanical conditioning, which gained acceptance during the 1950's is probably still the greatest single change in hay harvesting and storage technology during this century. However, a number of other noteworthy changes and innovations have occurred in recent years which have helped to reduce the extent of losses during hay harvesting and storage.

Fibroblast Growth Factor 2 Endocytosis In Endothelial Cells Proceed Via Syndecan-4-Dependent Activation Of Rac1 And A Cdc42-Dependent Macropinocytic Pathway, Eugene Tkachenko, Esther Lutgens, Radu-Virgil Stan, Michael Simons

Dartmouth Scholarship

Full activity of fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) requires their internalization in addition to the interaction with cell surface receptors. Recent studies have suggested that the transmembrane proteoglycan syndecan-4 functions as a FGF2 receptor. In this study we investigated the molecular basis of syndecan endocytosis and its role in FGF2 internalization in endothelial cells. We found that syndecan-4 uptake, induced either by treatment with FGF2 or by antibody clustering, requires the integrity of plasma membrane lipid rafts for its initiation, occurs in a non-clathrin-, non-dynamin-dependent manner and involves Rac1, which is activated by syndecan-4 clustering. FGF2 was internalized in a complex …

Piggybac Transformation Of The New World Screwworm, Cochliomyia Hominivorax, Produces Multiple Distinct Mutant Strains, M.L. Allen, A.M. Handler, Dennis Berkebile, S.R. Skoda

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Sterile insect technique (SIT) programs are designed to eradicate pest species by releasing mass-reared, sterile insects into an infested area. The first major implementation of SIT was the New World Screwworm Eradication Program, which successfully eliminated the New World screwworm (NWS), Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), from the Continental US, Mexico and much of Central America. Ionizing radiation is currently used for sterilization, but transgenic insect techniques could replace this method, providing a safer, more cost-effective alternative. Genetic transformation methods have been demonstrated in NWS, and verified by Southern blot hybridization, PCR and sequencing of element insertion junctions. A lethal …

Habitat Associations Of Gopher Tortoise Burrows On Industrial Timberlands, Jeanne C. Jones, Brian S. Dorr Feb 2004

Habitat Associations Of Gopher Tortoise Burrows On Industrial Timberlands, Jeanne C. Jones, Brian S. Dorr

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The western population of the gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1987 due to extensive population declines. Declines have been linked to site conversion of native pine (Pinus spp.) forests for urban development, agriculture, and commercial forest management. We conducted surveys to detect tortoise burrows on corporate timberlands in southern Mississippi and southwestern Alabama during summer 1994. We surveyed 2,759 0.5-ha strip transects on soil types of 9 different suitability categories for gopher tortoises. We found 460 active and 264 abandoned burrows on the 1,380 ha surveyed. Edaphic and …

The Anchor, Volume 117.19: February 25, 2004, Hope College Feb 2004

The Anchor, Volume 117.19: February 25, 2004, Hope College

The Anchor: 2004

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
