Characterizing A Rapid Extraction Apparatus For The Removal Of Vocs From Aqueous Samples And Interfacing It With Fast Analysis Systems Such As The Aromatic Specific Laser Ionization Detector., Melissa Jean Meyer Feb 2004

Characterizing A Rapid Extraction Apparatus For The Removal Of Vocs From Aqueous Samples And Interfacing It With Fast Analysis Systems Such As The Aromatic Specific Laser Ionization Detector., Melissa Jean Meyer

Theses and Dissertations

Analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is an important analytical task because of the prevalence of these compounds and the detriment they pose to the environment and human health. There are many improvements that are possible in the extraction and detection steps of these analytes. This dissertation will focus on these improvements. In particular, an extraction apparatus was developed in our laboratory for the removal of VOCs from aqueous samples in less than one minute. Also, a detector that is highly selective for aromatic VOCs will be discussed in detail.

Extraction of VOCs from aqueous samples into the gas phase …

Isolated Ventricular Myocyte Contractile Function Is Depressed In Rats Fed High Fat And/Or Marginally Copper -Deficient Diets., David P. Relling Feb 2004

Isolated Ventricular Myocyte Contractile Function Is Depressed In Rats Fed High Fat And/Or Marginally Copper -Deficient Diets., David P. Relling

Theses and Dissertations

Obesity is influenced by dietary consumption of fat while much of the population consumes a diet deficient of the trace mineral copper. Obesity and copper deficiency can alter cardiovascular function; including cardiac hypertrophy, increased myocyte lipid droplet volume, and cardiac contractile depression. Interestingly, lipotoxic dysfunction is characterized by many of the same mechanistic alterations that are observed in obesity and copper deficiency. Additionally, the sphingolipid ceramide is elevated in lipotoxic dysfunction. However, functional leptin:leptin receptor signaling prevents lipotoxic dysfunction. The purpose of my dissertation was to determine the role of a high fat and marginal copper deficient diet on cardiac …

Cognitive Processing Patterns Associated With Completion Of Treatment For Domestic Violence, Amina Porter Feb 2004

Cognitive Processing Patterns Associated With Completion Of Treatment For Domestic Violence, Amina Porter

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the differences in how domestically violent men processed social information before, during, and after the completion of treatment received from a Batterers Intervention Program in Florida.

Men receiving mandatory treatment for domestic violence as the result of a court order were exposed to a series of hypothetical scenarios involving their intimate partners and women with whom they were not intimately acquainted. The scenarios were sculpted to create negative feelings in the men,and cognitive processing patterns were investigated by testing their recall of social cues, their perception of intentionality and hostility, response consideration, response decisions, enactment ability, and …

The New Hampshire Estuaries project awarded a grant of $24,700 to the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests in May of 2002 for municipal conservation outreach and technical assistance in the area of municipal funds for permanent land conservation. SPNHF, working in close partnership with the Center for Land Conservation Assistance, conducted research into available mechanisms and funding sources for municipal conservation efforts. A publication summarizing the available options and providing information and case studies from a variety of New Hampshire towns was produced. Maggots Trump Antibiotics For Some Patients With Infected Wounds, Staff Report Feb 2004

Maggots Trump Antibiotics For Some Patients With Infected Wounds, Staff Report

University of Mississippi News

British physicians are reaching way back into medical history for the latest treatment for patients with infected wounds: maggots. The British National Health Service has authorized doctors to prescribe maggot treatment - a centuries-old practice that fell out of favor after the discovery of antibiotics - as a way to combat antibiotic resistance and spiraling medial costs. Researchers have confirmed that sterile maggots, which eat dead, infected tissue, can help wounds heal faster than conventional medicine.

Biology And Culture Of Channel Catfish, James F. Glahn, D. Tommy King Feb 2004

Biology And Culture Of Channel Catfish, James F. Glahn, D. Tommy King

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

A survey of catfish producers by the United States Department of Agriculture. Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health (CEAH) in 1996 indicated that the two primary sources of catfish losses in commercial operations were disease (45%) and wildlife (37%) (CEAH 1997a) . A variety of avian and mammalian predators are attracted to aquaculture facilities in the United States (Parkhurst et a1 . 1992) because ponds and open raceways provide a constant and readily accessible food supply for these animals . However. the mere presence of these predators around aquaculture facilities does not necessarily mean that significant depredation problems are occurring …

All-1/Mll1, A Homologue Of Drosophila Trithorax, Modifies Chromatin And Is Directly Involved In Infant Acute Leukaemia., E Canaani, T Nakamura, T Rozovskaia, S T Smith, T Mori, C M Croce, Alexander Mazo

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

Rearrangements of the ALL-1/MLL1 gene underlie the majority of infant acute leukaemias, as well as of therapy-related leukaemias developing in cancer patients treated with inhibitors of topoisomerase II, such as VP16 and doxorubicin. The rearrangements fuse ALL-1 to any of >50 partner genes or to itself. Here, we describe the unique features of ALL-1-associated leukaemias, and recent progress in understanding molecular mechanisms involved in the activity of the ALL-1 protein and of its Drosophila homologue TRITHORAX.

Coyotes In Yellowstone National Park: The Influence Of Dominance On Foraging, Territoriality, And Fitness, Eric M. Gese Feb 2004

Coyotes In Yellowstone National Park: The Influence Of Dominance On Foraging, Territoriality, And Fitness, Eric M. Gese

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The coyote, is an opportunistic, generalist predator that has expanded its distribution to most of North America and is probably one of the most widely researched canids. Yet, its typically nocturnal, secretive behavior mean there have been only two studies-both in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming-based on direct observation of wild coyotes (Camenzind 1978b; Bekoff and Wells 1986). The coyote population in YNP has not been persecuted for several decades, and thus is tolerant of humans to an extent that has facilitated our studies of how coyotes deal with fluctuations in temperature, snow depth, snow-pack hardness, and food availability (e.g. …

The Maximands Of Corporate Governance: A Theory Of Values And Cognitive Style, Amir N. Licht Feb 2004

The Maximands Of Corporate Governance: A Theory Of Values And Cognitive Style, Amir N. Licht

ExpressO

This paper considers the raison d’être of corporations as it is reflected in the maximands of corporate governance. The debate over stockholders’ versus stakeholders’ interests as such maximands has been raging for decades. Advances in economic theory have not only failed to resolve this debate but have established that the problem is graver than what many may have estimated. This paper turns this debate on its head: Instead of asking What or Whose interests should corporations maximize, the real question is Why is this debate taking place at all? Aiming to extend current economic analyses of the maximands issue, this …
