The Influence Of Vibration On Muscle Activation And Rate Of Force Development During Maximal Isometric Contractions, Brendan Humphries, Geoff Warman, Jason Purton, Tim L.A Doyle, Eric Dugan Mar 2004

The Influence Of Vibration On Muscle Activation And Rate Of Force Development During Maximal Isometric Contractions, Brendan Humphries, Geoff Warman, Jason Purton, Tim L.A Doyle, Eric Dugan

Research outputs pre 2011

At present there appears to be a need for research conducted on the effects of vibration on the contractile ability of skeletal muscle tissue. The aim of this study was to address this issue by examining the effects of a superimposed muscle/tendon vibration at 50.42±1.16 Hz (acceleration 13.24 ± 0.18ms-2: displacement ≈5mm) on muscular activation and maximal isometric contraction. Sixteen participants with a mean age, body mass, and height of 22 ± 4.4 years, 73.2 ± 11.7 kg and 173.1 ± 9.7 cms, respectively, were recruited for this study. Electromyography and accelerometry from the rectus femoris, and maximal …

Magnetosome Formation In Prokaryotes, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Richard B. Frankel Mar 2004

Magnetosome Formation In Prokaryotes, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Richard B. Frankel

Physics

Magnetotactic bacteria were discovered almost 30 years ago, and for many years and many different reasons, the number of researchers working in this field was few and progress was slow. Recently, however, thanks to the isolation of new strains and the development of new techniques for manipulating these strains, researchers from several laboratories have made significant progress in elucidating the molecular, biochemical, chemical and genetic bases of magnetosome formation and understanding how these unique intracellular organelles function. We focus here on this progress.

The Biological Burden Of Antibiotic Resistance In Staphylococcus Aureus, Natasha Samantha Dean Mar 2004

The Biological Burden Of Antibiotic Resistance In Staphylococcus Aureus, Natasha Samantha Dean

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Antibiotic resistance is a major problem. Resistance is often mediated by genes on bacterial plasmids and dissemination of resistance is commonly achieved by plasmid transfer. The mechanisms of resistance that are presently understood suggest that resistance is energetically costly. If this is generally true, resistance would reduce the fitness of cells in the absence of antibiotics. We examined the hypothesis that resistance reduces the fitness of microorganism and requires continuous selection to be maintained. To test this hypothesis, we measured the effects of plasmid-borne resistance genes on cell growth by comparing the growth rates of Staphylococcus aureus with and without …

Spectral Dependence Of Coherent Backscattering Of Light In A Narrow-Resonance Atomic System, D. V. Kupriyanov, I. M. Sokolov, N. V. Larionov, P. Kulatunga, C. I. Sukenik, S. Balik, M. D. Havey Mar 2004

Spectral Dependence Of Coherent Backscattering Of Light In A Narrow-Resonance Atomic System, D. V. Kupriyanov, I. M. Sokolov, N. V. Larionov, P. Kulatunga, C. I. Sukenik, S. Balik, M. D. Havey

Physics Faculty Publications

We report a combined theoretical and experimental study of the spectral and polarization dependence of near-resonant radiation coherently backscattered from an ultracold gas of 85Rb atoms. Measurements in a 6 MHz range about the 5s 2S1/25p 2P3/2, F=3F'=4 hyperfine transition are compared with simulations based on a realistic model of the experimental atomic density distribution. In the simulations, the influence of heating of the atoms in the vapor, magnetization of the vapor, finite spectral bandwidth, and other nonresonant hyperfine transitions are considered. Good agreement is found between the simulations and measurements.

The Hand That Rocks The Cradle: How Children's Literature Reflects Motherhood, Identity, And International Adoption, Susan Ayres Mar 2004

The Hand That Rocks The Cradle: How Children's Literature Reflects Motherhood, Identity, And International Adoption, Susan Ayres

Faculty Scholarship

Children's books are "a source of law" for children because "[children] are constantly trying to make sense of what is going on around them, and although literature itself is only a constituent of life experience, as a constituent it is potentially of the greatest importance." As adults and lawyers, we can also read children's books as a source of law because they reflect patriarchal ideologies about the family and stigma surrounding adoption. Like other myths, children's books tell stories about origins and constitute not only subjects but are also the foundation of law by reflecting legal norms and projecting legal …

International Adoption & International Comity: When Is Adoption Repugnant, Malinda L. Seymore Mar 2004

International Adoption & International Comity: When Is Adoption Repugnant, Malinda L. Seymore

Faculty Scholarship

Do judges have the authority to recognize decrees of foreign adoption? Since 1989, over 167,000 parents of children adopted in other countries have needed to know the answer to that question. Adoption creates a parent-child relationship that is not legally different from a biologically created parent-child relationship. Parents are entitled to the same rights and owe the same obligations to adopted children as they do to biological children, and adopted children are entitled to the same benefits as biological children. Adopted children are entitled to the financial support of their parents to the same extent as biological children. Thus, in …

A "Patent" Restriction On Research & Development: Infringers Or Innovators?, Srividhya Ragavan Mar 2004

A "Patent" Restriction On Research & Development: Infringers Or Innovators?, Srividhya Ragavan

Faculty Scholarship

The Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights ("TRIPS") requires developing nations to harmonize patent regimes as a means to achieve stronger industrial growth. Countries, however, need to adopt effective patent procedures in order to successfully institute a patent regime. In spite of this, international treaties like TRIPS do not properly assist developing nations in establishing appropriate procedural mechanisms capable of complimenting a sophisticated patent regime. Consequently, developing nations may embrace ineffective patent procedures that can eventually further limit industrial growth despite establishing a TRIPS compliant patent regime. The paper uses India as a case study to demonstrate the detriments …

Grutter Or Otherwise: Racial Preferences And Higher Education, Larry Alexander, Maimon Schwarzschild Mar 2004

Grutter Or Otherwise: Racial Preferences And Higher Education, Larry Alexander, Maimon Schwarzschild

University of San Diego Public Law and Legal Theory Research Paper Series

Last year's Supreme Court decisions on affirmative action, Gratz and Grutter, are dubious as constitutional law, bringing to mind what John Hart Ely said about Roe v. Wade: "[I]t is not constitutional law, and gives almost no sense of an obligation to try to be." There was at best a cosmetic difference between the University of Michigan undergraduate school's crude "20-points-extra for minority applicants" (which the Court struck down) and the Law School's "holistic" and disingenuous preferences (which the Court upheld). The idea that the Law School has a "compelling state interest" in these racial and ethnic preferences is utterly …

Lagoon Monitoring And Condition Parameters, John Harrison, Dallen Smith

All Current Publications

Lagoons combine storage and treatment functions and thus are more sensitive to management inputs than are solid or slurry facilities. The establishment and maintenance of desirable microbiological populations in lagoons requires more specific procedures in the way lagoons are loaded and monitored.

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Two studies examined the pharmacokinetics of indinavir and rifabutin when coadministered in healthy subjects. Rifabutin, which induces the expression of cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A, and indinavir, which inhibits that enzyme system, are frequently coadministered in patients infected with HIV. The second study was undertaken to determine if altering the dose of rifabutin coadministered with indinavir would minimize the drug interaction observed in the first study. Two studies, each with a three-period crossover design, were performed. In study 1, standard doses of rifabutin and indinavir (300 mg of rifabutin qd and 800 mg indinavir q8h) were administered as monotherapy (with placebo …

“It’S The Law.”: Social Norms And The Rule Of Law, Amir N. Licht Feb 2004

“It’S The Law.”: Social Norms And The Rule Of Law, Amir N. Licht

ExpressO

This Article posits that treating social norms as isolated regularities, as is commonly done in the legal literature, misses the big picture of social norms. Analyses of the relations between social norms and the law consequently run the risk of becoming “just so stories.” Economic analyses of other-regarding behavior may go beyond the narrow view of self-interestedness yet they remain confined to the individual level of analysis. To account for the societal-level mechanisms underlying social norms, this Article outlines a model in which norms form interdependent systems. Societal emphases on cultural values define the backbone of an evolving body of …
