The Nad(P)H Oxidase Homolog Nox4 Modulates Insulin-Stimulated Generation Of H202 And Plays An Integral Role In Insulin Signal Transduction, Kalyankar Mahadev, Hiroyuki Motoshima, Xiangdong Wu, Jean Marie Ruddy, Rebecca S. Arnold, Guangjie Cheng, J. David Lambeth, Barry J. Goldstein Mar 2004

The Nad(P)H Oxidase Homolog Nox4 Modulates Insulin-Stimulated Generation Of H202 And Plays An Integral Role In Insulin Signal Transduction, Kalyankar Mahadev, Hiroyuki Motoshima, Xiangdong Wu, Jean Marie Ruddy, Rebecca S. Arnold, Guangjie Cheng, J. David Lambeth, Barry J. Goldstein

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Insulin stimulation of target cells elicits a burst of H2O2 that enhances tyrosine phosphorylation of the insulin receptor and its cellular substrate proteins as well as distal signaling events in the insulin action cascade. The molecular mechanism coupling the insulin receptor with the cellular oxidant-generating apparatus has not been elucidated. Using reverse transcription-PCR and Northern blot analyses, we found that Nox4, a homolog of gp91phox, the phagocytic NAD(P)H oxidase catalytic subunit, is prominently expressed in insulin-sensitive adipose cells. Adenovirus-mediated expression of Nox4 deletion constructs lacking NAD(P)H or FAD/NAD(P)H cofactor binding domains acted in a dominant-negative …

A Dominant-Negative Fur Mutation In Bradyrhizobium Japonicum, Heather P. Benson, Kristin Levier, Mary Lou Guerinot Mar 2004

A Dominant-Negative Fur Mutation In Bradyrhizobium Japonicum, Heather P. Benson, Kristin Levier, Mary Lou Guerinot

Dartmouth Scholarship

In many bacteria, the ferric uptake regulator (Fur) protein plays a central role in the regulation of iron uptake genes. Because iron figures prominently in the agriculturally important symbiosis between soybean and its nitrogen-fixing endosymbiont Bradyrhizobium japonicum, we wanted to assess the role of Fur in the interaction. We identified a fur mutant by selecting for manganese resistance. Manganese interacts with the Fur protein and represses iron uptake genes. In the presence of high levels of manganese, bacteria with a wild-type copy of the furgene repress iron uptake systems and starve for iron, whereas fur mutants fail to …

Can We Reduce Mortality In Sepsis? Mar 2004

Can We Reduce Mortality In Sepsis?

Saudi Medical Journal

Considerable progress has been made over the last 2 decades in diagnosing and treating sepsis. Although the mortality rate is beginning to decline with the development of new therapeutic interventions, it still remains unacceptably high. Five such interventions are discussed in this review article to provide guidance for intensivists on the integration and implementation of new interventions into the intensive care unit. They were shown in randomized, controlled trials to reduce mortality by limiting the tidal volume in acute lung injury or acute respiratory distress syndrome, the early goal directed therapy, the use of recombinant human activated protein C, the …

Anticardiolipin And Antinuclear Antibodies In The Adult Healthy Omani Individuals Mar 2004

Anticardiolipin And Antinuclear Antibodies In The Adult Healthy Omani Individuals

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence and normal versus abnormal levels of anticardiolipin antibodies (aCL) in a healthy adult population of Omanis and whether a correlation exists between aCL and antinuclear antibodies (ANA) in this Omani population. METHODS: A total of 521 healthy Omani individuals (333 males and 188 females), aged between 17-54-years were investigated for the presence and quantities of anticardiolipin antibodies (immunoglobulin G (IgG)) and IgM isotypes using a conventional enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Antinuclear antibodies were detected, in this group, using standard indirect immunofluorescence techniques. This study was conducted during the period 2002 through to 2003 at the …

The Pluralist Predicament: Contemporary Theorizing In The Law Of Religious Freedom, Steven Douglas Smith Mar 2004

The Pluralist Predicament: Contemporary Theorizing In The Law Of Religious Freedom, Steven Douglas Smith

University of San Diego Public Law and Legal Theory Research Paper Series

Religious pluralism is at once the cause of and a substantial impediment to theorizing about religious freedom. The purpose of theorizing in law is typically to impose order on an unruly collection of phenomena - of seemingly conflicting decisions, or doctrines, or legal arguments - and to do so by articulating and elaborating the foundational truths that govern the subject in question. In a condition of religious pluralism, however, theorists typically suppose that it is impermissible to appeal to contested religious beliefs. But these are the very beliefs that would provide the natural foundations for thinking about the proper relation …

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Objective: To determine if the prevalence of respiratory disease among dental students and dental residents varies with their exposure to the clinical dental environment.

Methods: A detailed questionnaire was administered to 817 students at 3 dental schools. The questionnaire sought information concerning demographic characteristics, school year, exposure to the dental environment and dental procedures, and history of respiratory disease. The data obtained were subjected to bivariate and multiple logistic regression analysis.

Results: Respondents reported experiencing the following respiratory conditions during the previous year: asthma (26 cases), bronchitis (11 cases), chronic lung disease (6 cases), pneumonia (5 cases) …

Tuberculosis, John B. Kaneene, Charles O. Thoen Mar 2004

Tuberculosis, John B. Kaneene, Charles O. Thoen

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Tuberculosis is a term that encompasses various diseases caused by bacteria of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, including M tuberculosis, M bovis, M africanum, and other mycobacterial species. Whereas M tuberculosis infection is largely spread from human to human, M bovis infection has been identified as a zoonotic disease with most cases of human infection attributable to animal sources. The mycobacteria other than tuberculosis complex (MOTT), which includes M avium subsp avium and M avium subsp intracellulare isolated from animals, has been isolated from immune-compromised humans (ie, those with human immunodeficiency virus [HIV] infection), but seldom from immunocompetent humans. Recently, …

An Exploration Of Quaker Women’S Writing Between 1650 And 1700, Caroline Baker Mar 2004

An Exploration Of Quaker Women’S Writing Between 1650 And 1700, Caroline Baker

Journal of International Women's Studies

Throughout the tumultuous period that was the English Civil War, there was a great change in society’s values and beliefs resulting in the establishment of many new political and religious groups. Quakerism, established in the 1640’s, appealed to women as it gave them freedom to prophesy and to proclaim the gospel. This study explores the role of Quaker women’s writing specifically between the years 1650 and 1700, a period of increased religious prominence. Texts from this time are examined including the journal and the epistle to the prophetic tract. The presence of women as preachers and missionaries is explored in …

The Prisoner Of Gender: Foucault And The Disciplining Of The Female Body, Angela King Mar 2004

The Prisoner Of Gender: Foucault And The Disciplining Of The Female Body, Angela King

Journal of International Women's Studies

The work of Michel Foucault has been extremely influential amongst feminist scholars and for good reason; his meditations on discipline, power, sexuality and subjectivity are particularly pertinent to feminist analysis. Yet despite his preoccupation with power and its effects on the body, Foucault’s own analysis was curiously gender-neutral. Remarkably, there is no exploration or even acknowledgement of the extent to which gender determines the techniques and degrees of discipline exerted on the body. Although this exposes serious flaws in Foucault’s work, I don’t believe it negates his entire theoretical framework. Rather it can be adopted and adapted; his glaring omissions …

Reading As Act Of Queer Love: The Role Of Intimacy In The “Readerly” Contract, Lee Ronald Mar 2004

Reading As Act Of Queer Love: The Role Of Intimacy In The “Readerly” Contract, Lee Ronald

Journal of International Women's Studies

The following paper has been revised from my 2001 MA thesis, which asked ‘Is it possible to define a strategy for reading queer?’ This includes an investigation of how the traditionally stable categories of reader/text/author may be redefined by queer strategies that instead force instability and flux. In the three years that have elapsed since first conceiving of this piece, I argue that the potential of queer reading is still one that has not been adequately explored. As I acknowledge, ‘whilst the queer does flag the fluctuating nature of sexual identity… it may also be used to unpack broader patterns …

Corporate Social Responsibility In A Global Economy After September 11: Profits, Freedom, And Human Rights, Frank René López Mar 2004

Corporate Social Responsibility In A Global Economy After September 11: Profits, Freedom, And Human Rights, Frank René López

Mercer Law Review

The world economy is now more integrated than ever before. With improved technology in communications and transportation and the explosion of new trade markets, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement ("NAFTA"), the United States has expanded its economic grip to countries all over the world. The United States is at the forefront of the ever-expanding global economy.

Globalization has enabled many U.S. companies to achieve incredible financial success. In fact, many global corporations are now enormous economic giants with economies that rival those of many developing countries. For example, in 2000 Exxon-Mobil's gross sales were $210.3 billion while …

Astronaut Eva Exposure Estimates From Cad Model Spacesuit Geometry, Giovanni De Angelis, Brooke M. Anderson, William Atwell, John E. Nealy, Gary D. Qualls, John W. Wilson

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Ongoing assembly and maintenance activities at the International Space Station (ISS) require much more extravehicular activity (EVA) than did the earlier U.S. Space Shuttle missions. It is thus desirable to determine and analyze, and possibly foresee, as accurately as possible what radiation exposures crew members involved in EVAs will experience in order to minimize risks and to establish exposure limits that must not to be exceeded. A detailed CAD model of the U.S. Space Shuttle EVA Spacesuit, developed at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC), is used to represent the directional shielding of an astronaut; it has detailed helmet and backpack …
