Observations From Swine Mandatory Price Reporting, Matthew Diersen Mar 2004

Observations From Swine Mandatory Price Reporting, Matthew Diersen

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Under the Livestock Mandatory Reporting Act of 1999, large packers of cattle, swine, and sheep must report data from purchases and processing with respect to price, volume, and grade. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) assembles and disseminates the price reports. A list of all reports under mandatory price reporting can be accessed at the AMS website, www.ams.usda.gov. Methods of disseminating the abundance of new information in an understandable manner need to be examined. In addition, the report covered below was not released consistently until after a restrictive confidentiality guideline was changed. Currently, a variety of prices …

Seasonal Use Of Bridges By Rafinesque's Big-Eared Bat, Corynorhinus Rafinesquii, In Southern Mississippi, Austin W. Trousdale, David C. Beckett

Faculty Publications

We conducted surveys of concrete bridges in southern Mississippi from 2000–2002 to determine the phenological pattern of use by Rafinesque's big-eared bat, Corynorhinus rafinesquii. The earliest dates on which we located maternity colonies were 9 March 2000, 20 April 2001, and 15 May 2002. Maternity colonies increased in size and abundance as spring progressed. Pups were born in mid- to late May (first observed 12 May 2000, 15 May 2001, 27 May 2002) and nursed through midsummer (lactating females last captured 14 July 2000, 25 July 2001, 16 July 2002). Colony size and percentage of bridges occupied by bats declined …

Organic Production Systems: What The Biological Cell Can Teach Us About Manufacturing, Lieven Demeester, Knut Eichler, Christoph H. Loch Mar 2004

Organic Production Systems: What The Biological Cell Can Teach Us About Manufacturing, Lieven Demeester, Knut Eichler, Christoph H. Loch

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Biological cells run complicated and sophisticated production systems. The study of the cell's production technology provides us with insights that are potentially useful in industrial manufacturing. When comparing cell metabolism with manufacturing techniques in industry, we find some striking commonalities, but also some important differences. Like today's well-run factories, the cell operates a very lean production system, assures quality at the source, and uses component commonality to simplify production. While we can certainly learn from how the cell accomplishes these parallels, it is even more interesting to look at how the cell operates differently. In biological cells, all products and …

Logistic And Multiple Regression: A Two-Pronged Approach To Accurately Estimate Cost Growth In Major Dod Weapon Systems, Matthew B. Rossetti Mar 2004

Logistic And Multiple Regression: A Two-Pronged Approach To Accurately Estimate Cost Growth In Major Dod Weapon Systems, Matthew B. Rossetti

Theses and Dissertations

This research confirms the usefulness of the logistic and multiple regression two-step procedure for assessing cost growth in major DoD weapon systems. We compile programmatic data from the Selected Acquisition Reports (SARs) between 1990 and 2002 for programs covering all defense departments. Our analysis concentrates on cost growth in the procurement appropriations of the Engineering and Manufacturing Development phase of acquisitions. We investigate the use of logistic regression in cost growth analysis to predict whether or not cost growth will occur in a program. If applicable, multiple regression is implemented to predict how much cost growth will occur. Our study …

Swarming Reconnaissance Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles In A Parallel Discrete Event Simulation, Joshua J. Corner Mar 2004

Swarming Reconnaissance Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles In A Parallel Discrete Event Simulation, Joshua J. Corner

Theses and Dissertations

Current military affairs indicate that future military warfare requires safer, more accurate, and more fault-tolerant weapons systems. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) are one answer to this military requirement. Technology in the UAV arena is moving toward smaller and more capable systems and is becoming available at a fraction of the cost. Exploiting the advances in these miniaturized flying vehicles is the aim of this research. How are the UAVs employed for the future military? The concept of operations for a micro-UAV system is adopted from nature from the appearance of flocking birds, movement of a school of fish, and swarming …

Measuring The Risk Of Shortfalls In Air Force Capabilities, William E. Woodward Mar 2004

Measuring The Risk Of Shortfalls In Air Force Capabilities, William E. Woodward

Theses and Dissertations

The U.S. Air Force seeks to measure and prioritize risk as part of its Capabilities Review and Risk Assessment (CRRA) process. The goal of the CRRA is to identify capability shortfalls, and the risks associated with those shortfalls, to influence future systems acquisition. Many fields, including engineering, medicine and finance, seek to model and measure risks. This research utilizes various risk measurement approaches to propose appropriate risk measures for a military context. Specifically, risk is modeled as a non-negative random variable of severity. Four measures are examined: simple expectation, a risk-value measure, tail conditional expectation, and distorted expectation. Risk measures …

Characterization Of Microbial Processes That Degrade Chlorinated Solvents In A Constructed Wetland Using Organic Acid And Inorganic Anion Concentration Profiles, Chad B. Bondurant

Theses and Dissertations

Chlorinated solvents have been used in industrial cleaning and degreasing processes in the United States since the early 1900s, and their induction into the environment increased significantly with the growth of industrial processes over the past century. PCE, TCE and their daughter products have been associated with a number of human health concerns and are currently the most common contaminants found in groundwater in the United States. Wetlands possess characteristics necessary for the complete degradation of chlorinated ethenes by microorganisms via anaerobic and aerobic regions that foster the necessary oxidation-reduction conditions. Organic acid and inorganic anion concentrations were evaluated in …

Demonstrating Optothermal Actuators For An Autonomous Mems Microrobot, Francis R. Szabo Mar 2004

Demonstrating Optothermal Actuators For An Autonomous Mems Microrobot, Francis R. Szabo

Theses and Dissertations

There are numerous applications for microrobots which are beneficial to the Air Force. However, the microrobotics field is still in its infancy, and will require extensive basic research before these applications can be fielded. The biggest hurdle to be solved, in order to create autonomous microrobots, is generating power for their actuator engines. Most present actuators require orders of magnitude more power than is presently available from micropower sources. To enable smaller microrobots, this research proposed a simplified power concept that eliminates the need for on-board power supplies and control circuitry by using actuators powered wirelessly from the environment. This …

Aerobic Biodegradation Of Alternative Fuel Oxygenates In Unsaturated Soil Columns, Kevin A. Mares Mar 2004

Aerobic Biodegradation Of Alternative Fuel Oxygenates In Unsaturated Soil Columns, Kevin A. Mares

Theses and Dissertations

Groundwater contamination problems caused by methyl-tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) in subsurface waters have prompted the search for a gasoline oxygenate replacement. In order to avoid the problems encountered with MTBE, it is prudent to evaluate the fate and transport in the subsurface of proposed replacements, such as ethanol. In this study, ethanol transport and degradation in unsaturated soil was investigated using a series of eight soil columns. This preliminary study was to see if the soil column system components functioned properly, how similarly the eight soil columns performed, and if soil oxygen concentration affected degradation of ethanol. Tracer tests, using …

An Evaluation Of Formate As An Electron Donor To Facilitate Palladium (Pd) - Catalyzed Destruction Of Chlorinated Aliphatic Hydrocarbons, Matthew D. Welling

Theses and Dissertations

Chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs) such as trichloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE), and trichloroethane (TCA) are probable human carcinogens that have been used widely within the DoD, primarily as solvents for cleaning and metal degreasing. These compounds are frequently found to be groundwater contaminants. In fact, TCE and PCE are the first and third most commonly detected groundwater contaminants nationwide. The focus of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using a palladium (Pd) catalyst with formate as a reductant to treat CAH-contaminated groundwater. TCE was used as a model CAH. Other investigators have focused on hydrogen gas (H2) …

Modeling A Field Application Of In Situ Bioremediation Of Perchlorate-Contaminated Groundwater Using Horizontal Flow Treatment Wells (Hftws), Peter G. Chosa Mar 2004

Modeling A Field Application Of In Situ Bioremediation Of Perchlorate-Contaminated Groundwater Using Horizontal Flow Treatment Wells (Hftws), Peter G. Chosa

Theses and Dissertations

Perchlorate contaminated groundwater is rapidly becoming a significant environmental remediation issue for the Department of Defense. In this study, an existing numerical model that simulates the operation of a Horizontal Flow Treatment Well (HFTW) system to effect the in situ biodegradation of perchlorate through the addition of an electron donor is modified to include a submodel that describes bioclogging. Bioclogging restricts flow out of the HFTW due to the accumulation of biomass directly adjacent to the well. The modified model is then applied to an existing perchlorate contaminated site that will be used for an evaluation of the HFTW technology. …

Application Of Horizontal Flow Treatment Wells For In Situ Treatment Of Mtbe-Contaminated Groundwater, Preston F. Rufe

Theses and Dissertations

This study utilized a three-dimensional numerical model to evaluate the potential application of HFTWs to manage MTBE-contaminated groundwater. HFTWs consist of two dual-screened treatment wells. One well operates in an upflow mode, with MTBE-contaminated water extracted from an aquifer through a screen in the deep portion of an aquifer and injected into the aquifer through a shallow well screen, while the adjacent well operates in a downflow mode, extracting water from the shallow zone of the aquifer and injecting it into the deep zone. As the MTBE-contaminated water flows through the wells, an electron acceptor and/or another electron donor is …

2-O-Methylation Of Fucosyl Residues Of A Rhizobial Lipopolysaccharide Is Increased In Response To Host Exudate And Is Eliminated In A Symbiotically Defective Mutant, K. Dale Noel, Jodie M. Box, Valerie J. Boone

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

When Rhizobium etli CE3 was grown in the presence of Phaseolus vulgaris seed extracts containing anthocyanins, its lipopolysaccharide (LPS) sugar composition was changed in two ways: greatly decreased content of what is normally the terminal residue of the LPS, di-O-methylfucose, and a doubling of the 2-O-methylation of other fucose residues in the LPS O antigen. R. etli strain CE395 was isolated after Tn5 mutagenesis of strain CE3 by screening for mutant colonies that did not change antigenically in the presence of seed extract. The LPS of this strain completely lacked 2-O-methylfucose, regardless of whether anthocyanins …

Macrogeographic Genetic Structure In Acanthephyra Curtirostris (Oplophoridae), John Russell Scarbrough Mar 2004

Macrogeographic Genetic Structure In Acanthephyra Curtirostris (Oplophoridae), John Russell Scarbrough

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The vast oceanic living space on our planet is occupied by zooplankton species long assumed to be widespread and genetically undifferentiated across their species range. Recently, however, data from sensitive DNA-based molecular markers has shown that many cryptic species exist in the sea and that marine zooplankton species may be more genetically structured than previously thought. In the oceanic environment, the deep-sea appears to be particularly homogeneous with few observable barriers to gene flow and it is also less studied. DNA-based investigations of genetic diversity in the deep-sea are needed to help determine the spatial scale over which species and …

The Commons Concept And Intellectual Property Rights Regime: Whither Plant Genetic Resources And Traditional Knowledge?, Chika B. Onwuekwe

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] "The classification of plant genetic resources (PGRs) as the common heritage of humankind continues to generate controversies. The debate is between developing countries that are the primary sources of these resources and industrialized, biotechnologically advanced countries that appropriate and utilize PGRs as raw materials for various commercial products, such as medicine, seed variety, or pesticides. Scholars of diverse backgrounds express various opinions on whether PGRs obtained from plants found within a territory of a sovereign state should properly be designated “common heritage of humankind” or regarded as part of the “commons,” and therefore freely accessible. The debate also extends …

A Mutation In The Latency-Related Gene Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Inhibits Protein Expression From Open Reading Frame 2 And An Adjacent Reading Frame During Productive Infection, Yanjun Jiang, Melissa Inman, Yange Zhang, Nuria Aleman Posadas, Clinton J. Jones Mar 2004

Jones

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The latency-related (LR) gene of bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) is abundantly expressed during latency. A mutant BHV-1 strain that contains three stop codons at the 5′ terminus of the LR gene (LR mutant) does not reactivate from latency. This study demonstrates that the LR mutant does not express open reading frame 2 or an adjacent reading frame that lacks an initiating ATG (reading frame C). Since the LR mutant and wild-type BHV-1 express similar levels of LR RNA, we conclude that LR protein expression plays an important role in regulating the latency reactivation cycle in cattle.

Partnership For Peace: Charting A Course For A New Era, Jeffrey Simon Mar 2004

Partnership For Peace: Charting A Course For A New Era, Jeffrey Simon

Strategic Forums

This Strategic Forum brief examines the future of NATO’s Partnership for Peace (PFP) following Alliance enlargement and shifting post-9/11 security priorities. With many former partners joining NATO, the program faces questions about its continued relevance. The brief argues that PFP remains essential for promoting defense reform, democratic civil-military relations, interoperability, and regional security cooperation among remaining partner states. It recommends restructuring the program to address distinct regional needs, strengthening subregional initiatives, enhancing counterterrorism cooperation, and improving resource allocation. A revitalized Partnership for Peace, better integrated with NATO’s strategic objectives, would support stability in Europe’s periphery and reinforce long-term Euro-Atlantic security.

Science Fiction, Forbidden Planet, And Shakespeare's The Tempest, Simone Caroti Mar 2004

Science Fiction, Forbidden Planet, And Shakespeare's The Tempest, Simone Caroti

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Science Fiction, Forbidden Planet, and Shakespeare's The Tempest," Simone Caroti illustrates the way in which Cyril Hume and Fred Wilcox's 1956 science fiction movie Forbidden Planet -- whose plot is inspired by Shakespeare's Tempest -- reconfigures in Shakespeare's play. Caroti begins by defining the genre of science fiction and explaining its attraction for modern audiences. Following Darko Suvin's notions of science fiction, Caroti highlights the theme of cognitive estrangement and shows how Forbidden Planet offers a cultural translation of this theme in The Tempest. The result of Caroti's analysis is to read Prospero and his magic in …
