Supramolecular Metal-Organic And Organic Materials, Elisabeth Rather Mar 2004

Supramolecular Metal-Organic And Organic Materials, Elisabeth Rather

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The rational design of functional solids based upon the development of strategies for controlling intermolecular interactions and structural arrangement of simple molecular building units, represents a salient feature in the context of supramolecular chemistry and crystal engineering. Consideration of chemical functionality, geometrical capability and knowledge of the interplay between two or more sets of supramolecular interactions specific of preselected chemical components will facilitate further extension of crystal engineering towards the construction of supramolecular materials possessing valuable properties.

Calixarenes represent excellent building blocks for the design of solid-state architectures, in particular calix-4-arenes crystallize easily and the introduction of a wide range …

Judicial Recognition Of The Interests Of Animals - A New Tort, David Favre Mar 2004

Judicial Recognition Of The Interests Of Animals - A New Tort, David Favre

ExpressO

This article seeks to explore a simple but profound question. How should our legal system deal with the claims of animals for protection against harms inflicted by humans? Rather than a comparative rights analysis as used by some writers, this article will use the non-comparative approach based upon an interest analysis. The short answer is that our legal system can and should do what it always has done, balance the interests of competing individuals in a public policy context, always seeking to strike an ethically appropriate balance. It will be shown that the legislative branch of our government presently promotes …

The Female Athlete Triad: Role Of The Coach In Prevention And Intervention, Michelle Turner Breiland

Theses and Graduate Projects

Introduction The Female Athlete Triad consists of disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis. Eating disorders affect between 1-10% of adolescent and college age women (Haller, 1992),particularly in women's' sports in which leanness is considered important for performance such as cross-country running. Methods A three page 17 item questionnaire was sent out to 45 coaches of women's Division III cross-country teams in the Midwest region of the US. Descriptive statistics were run on the data. Results Results showed that 8% of coaches have coached an athlete with a diagnosed eating disorder. Of the top three topics for team discussions, 9% of coaches …

Particle Removal Rates By The Mud Shrimp Upogebia Pugettensis, Its Burrow, And A Commensal Clam: Effects On Estuarine Phytoplankton Abundance, Blaine D. Griffen, Theodore H. Dewitt, Chris Langdon

Faculty Publications

The burrowing shrimp Upogebia pugettensis is an abundant intertidal invertebrate of Pacific Northwest, USA bays and estuaries where it lives commensally with the bivalve Cryptomya californica. Suspension-feeding activities by the shrimp and by its commensal clam, as well as particle settlement within the burrow, represent 3 different components that could remove phytoplankton from water drawn into shrimp burrows. These 3 components together comprise what we call the ‘U. pugettensis shrimp-burrow complex’. In laboratory experiments, we measured particle removal by each of these components. Our results indicated that U. pugettensis itself is responsible for filtering the majority of phytoplankton removed …

Phase Imaging Digital Holography For Biological Microscopy, Daniel Parshall Mar 2004

Phase Imaging Digital Holography For Biological Microscopy, Daniel Parshall

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

We apply the techniques of digital holography to obtain microscopic 3D images of biological cells. Both the amplitude and phase images are obtained from a single hologram, with approximately 1 [mu]m lateral and 10 nm longitudinal resolution. The results are combined with previous experiments resolving the 2 [pi] ambiguity to produce continuous phase images of the samples.

Distribution, Metabolism And Trophic Ecology Of The Antarctic Cydippid Ctenophore, Callianira Antarctica, West Of The Antarctic Peninsula, Kerri M. Scolardi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The distribution, abundance, chemical composition, metabolism, and feeding ecology of the tentaculate ctenophore, Callianira antarctica (Chun 1897), were investigated during austral winter 2001and autumn & winter 2002, in the vicinity of Marguerite Bay west of the Antarctic Peninsula. Callianira antarctica had a widespread distribution during autumn and winter, and variable abundance (0.02 to 2.6 ind. m-2) during winter 2001 associated with specific circulation features. Size frequency distributions for autumn and winter suggest that more than half of the C. antarctica population may have experienced 'degrowth' during winter due to low food availability. Callianira antarctica is a fairly robust ctenophore with …

A Subgroup Algorithm To Identify Cross-Rotation Peaks Consistent With Non-Crystallographic Symmetry, Ryan H. Lilien, Chris Bailey-Kellogg, Amy C. Anderson, Bruce R. Donald Mar 2004

A Subgroup Algorithm To Identify Cross-Rotation Peaks Consistent With Non-Crystallographic Symmetry, Ryan H. Lilien, Chris Bailey-Kellogg, Amy C. Anderson, Bruce R. Donald

Dartmouth Scholarship

Molecular replacement (MR) often plays a prominent role in determining initial phase angles for structure determination by X-ray crystallography. In this paper, an efficient quaternion-based algorithm is presented for analyzing peaks from a cross-rotation function in order to identify model orientations consistent with proper non-crystallographic symmetry (NCS) and to generate proper NCS-consistent orientations missing from the list of cross-rotation peaks. The algorithm, CRANS, analyzes the rotation differences between each pair of cross-rotation peaks to identify finite subgroups. Sets of rotation differences satisfying the subgroup axioms correspond to orientations compatible with the correct proper NCS. The CRANS algorithm was first …

Risk Factors For Pediatric Community Acquired Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, Melissa Gail Kessler Mar 2004

Risk Factors For Pediatric Community Acquired Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, Melissa Gail Kessler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) began as a nosocomial infection due to overuse of antibiotics. Several previous studies have reported an increase in this infection in adult patients who have not been hospitalized. It has also been reported that there is an increase in MRSA in children. Some of these children became infected even though they were not at high risk for the infection. After approval from the All Children's Hospital Institutional Review Board (IRB), a cross sectional study was conducted with pediatric admissions and pediatric emergency room visits to determine the characteristics of Methicillin-Sensitive Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA. During this …
