A Comparison Of Exhaled Breath Nitric Oxide Between Old And Young Individuals, Robert L. Gordon
A Comparison Of Exhaled Breath Nitric Oxide Between Old And Young Individuals, Robert L. Gordon
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
BACKGROUND: Older individuals suffer from higher rates of pulmonary infections than younger individuals. In addition, older individuals have increased morbidity and mortality due to pulmonary infections when compared to younger individuals. The physiological and immunological reasons for these aforementioned differences are not clear. Recently, non-invasive markers of the lung's physiologic and immunologic status have been recognized. This study employs one of these non-invasive markers, exhaled nitric oxide, in an attempt to determine how the airways may change with age, predisposing older individuals to pulmonary diseases and poorer outcomes as compared to younger individuals.
METHODS: Exhaled nitric oxide measurements were obtained …

Correlation Between Nutritional Knowledge And Food Choices In Seventh Grade Students, Jennifer Rysavy
Correlation Between Nutritional Knowledge And Food Choices In Seventh Grade Students, Jennifer Rysavy
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background Diets of adolescents in the United States are not meeting the Food Pyramid guidelines, especially for fruits, vegetables, and dairy, yet they are far exceeding the recommended daily allowance for fat and added sugars. Even though adolescents possess nutritional knowledge, they are often choosing foods based on their taste, rather than their nutritional value. This study aimed to explore the relationship between nutritional knowledge and food choices in seventh grade students. It also evaluated the relationship gender had on nutrition knowledge and food choices. Method Nutritional knowledge and food choices were studied in two seventh grade health classes at …

Coyote Depredation Management: Current Methods And Research Needs, Brian R. Mitchell, Michael M. Jaeger, Reginald H. Barrett
Coyote Depredation Management: Current Methods And Research Needs, Brian R. Mitchell, Michael M. Jaeger, Reginald H. Barrett
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
This paper examines the severity of livestock depredation by coyotes (Canis latrans), reviews evidence implicating breeding (or “alpha”) coyotes in the majority of incidents, evaluates currently used depredation control techniques, and suggests directions for future research. Nonlethal control ranges from varied animal husbandry practices to coyote behavioral modification or sterilization. These methods show significant promise but have not been proven effective in controlled experiments. Therefore, many livestock producers rely on lethal control, and most employ nonselective strategies aimed at local population reduction. Sometimes this approach is effective; other times it is not. This strategy can fail because the …
Ammonia Flux At The Air/Water Interface Of Tampa Bay, Constance Anne Mizak
Ammonia Flux At The Air/Water Interface Of Tampa Bay, Constance Anne Mizak
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
An ammonia emissions inventory discovered that 90% of the ammonia emitted from Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Polk counties, originated from the latter two counties. This finding is significant and suggests that a substantial portion of the ammonia deposited to Tampa Bay is transported with easterly air masses.
Ammonia and ammonium concentrations at the coastal Gandy Bridge site were seasonally and diurnally consistent, but the rural Sydney site showed greater variability. It was determined that wind direction was the most influential parameter affecting the Gandy Bridge site, which supports the hypothesis that an advection of ammonia from the east is a major …
Detection And Quantification Of Karenia Brevis Blooms On The West Florida Shelf From Remotely Sensed Ocean Color Imagery, Jennifer P. Cannizzaro
Detection And Quantification Of Karenia Brevis Blooms On The West Florida Shelf From Remotely Sensed Ocean Color Imagery, Jennifer P. Cannizzaro
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Karenia brevis, a toxic dinoflagellate species that blooms regularly in the Gulf of Mexico, frequently causes widespread ecological and economic damage and can pose a serious threat to human health. Satellite-based ocean color imagery may provide a means for detecting and monitoring blooms, providing early alerts to coastal communities. However, a technique for discriminating K. brevis from other chlorophyll-containing algae is required. Between 1999 and 2001, a large bio-optical data set consisting of spectral measurements of remote-sensing reflectance (Rrs(lambda)), absorption (a(lambda)), and backscattering (bb(lambda)) along with chlorophyll a concentrations was collected on the central west Florida shelf (WFS) as …
Efficacy Of Aircraft Landing Lights In Stimulating Avoidance Behavior In Birds, Bradley F. Blackwell, Glen E. Burnhardt
Efficacy Of Aircraft Landing Lights In Stimulating Avoidance Behavior In Birds, Bradley F. Blackwell, Glen E. Burnhardt
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Aircraft collisions with wildlife (primarily birds) are costly in terms of injury or loss of human life, loss of the animals involved, damage to property and business, and the use of lethal control of wildlife at airports worldwide. One potential nonlethal technique to reduce bird–aircraft collisions—pulsed white and wavelength-specific aircraft-mounted light—has been considered for nearly 3 decades, but the efficacy of the technique has not been evaluated quantitatively. We tested the hypothesis that during daylight, captive birds exposed to an approaching ground-based vehicle exhibiting pulsing 250-W white aircraft landing lights would initiate avoidance behavior more quickly than birds experiencing an …

Determinants Of Safety Device Use In Adults Age 18-22 Years., Amanda J. Rajala
Determinants Of Safety Device Use In Adults Age 18-22 Years., Amanda J. Rajala
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background: The determinants of safety device use and non-use, in 18-22 year olds, are not clear and were targeted in this research. The literature revealed that safety devices are used due to personal safety, habit and legal reasons. Safety devices are not used due to physical discomfort, only drive/ride short distances and forgetfulness. Methods: This study is a multivariable, quantitative-non-experimental study, conducted on the campus of Augsburg College during an orientation event in June 2003. A multiple choice written questionnaire was distributed to participants of the orientation event. The identification of trends and patterns were determined to establish the determinants …

Proximate Cues For Ovarian Recrudescence And Ovulation In The Brown Treesnake (Boiga Irregularis) Under Laboratory Conditions, Tom Mathies, Elizabeth A. Franklin, Lowell A. Miller
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The reproductive biology of the brown treesnake (Boiga irregularis), an invasive tropical species known primarily for the extensive ecological damage it has caused on the island of Guam (Savidge 1987), is poorly understood. This is not for lack of sampling effort by researchers-it is simply because reproduction apparently occurs in all months of the year (Rodda et al. 1999) and periodic sampling in such systems cannot detect the phenology of major reproductive events (e.g., ovarian recrudescence, ovulation, oviposition) and other important life history attributes (e.g., frequency of reproduction). In such systems, repeated observations of individuals may be the …
