An Investigation Into Truancy Reduction Without Increasing The Drop Out Rate, Phillip C. Neff Jr. Apr 2004

An Investigation Into Truancy Reduction Without Increasing The Drop Out Rate, Phillip C. Neff Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this internship was to acquire and enhance through a supervisory experience, the leadership skills necessary for a school administrator. The intern's research project focused on decreasing truancy without increasing drop out rate.

The intern analyzed data collected through the use of a survey. The survey was given to a general population of students which consisted of two different sampling strategies. One sample was a convenience sample of students from the intern's classes, the other sample was judgmental coming from the newly developed Alternative Education Program at Paulsboro High School.

The intern found several interesting correlations associated with …

Strutural Damage Induced By Pyritic Shale, Shad E. Hoover, Mian C. Wang, Brian Dempsey Apr 2004

Strutural Damage Induced By Pyritic Shale, Shad E. Hoover, Mian C. Wang, Brian Dempsey

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The Evangelical Hospital located in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania has experienced distress in the form of cracked floor slabs and displaced structural steel due to swelling of the underlying fill material and natural bedrock formation. The bedrock consisted of black, pyritic, calcareous shale from the Marcellus Formation of the Hamilton Group (Devonian Age). The fill materials beneath the cracked concrete floor slabs consisted of the weathered shale fragments from this formation. Although mitigating the structural distress has been attempted, the building continued to experience problems relating to the swelling of the underlying bedrock materials. The expansion of the shale could be attributed …

Two Case Histories Of Blast- & Traffic-Induced Vibrations On The Stability Of Burrows Of Endangered Sensitive Ground Dwelling Animals, John A. Barneich, Jay Arabshshi, Steven K. Duke Apr 2004

Two Case Histories Of Blast- & Traffic-Induced Vibrations On The Stability Of Burrows Of Endangered Sensitive Ground Dwelling Animals, John A. Barneich, Jay Arabshshi, Steven K. Duke

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Two case histories are presented where jurisdictional authorities expressed a concern regarding the impact of blast and construction traffic induced vibrations on the stability of the burrows of endangered ground dwelling species. The first case history involved the use of explosives proposed to be used for a seismic survey in the vicinity of desert tortoise burrows. The concern was that the use of explosives in the vicinity of a tortoise burrow could cause the collapse of an occupied burrow potentially trapping the tortoise within the burrow. Field tests were performed by constructing artificial tortoise burrows and inducing progressively higher vibration …

A Model Based On Mechanics To Predict Settlements In Bioreactor Landfills, C. H. Hettiarachchi, J. N. Meegoda, J. P. Hettiaratchi Apr 2004

A Model Based On Mechanics To Predict Settlements In Bioreactor Landfills, C. H. Hettiarachchi, J. N. Meegoda, J. P. Hettiaratchi

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Prediction of waste settlement behavior during the construction phase of a landfill is vital to effective functioning of leachate recirculation systems and gas collection pipe network, yet prediction of waste settlement is complex and difficult to perform. Few models, are currently available which can be used to calculate landfill settlement of the entire waste thickness after closure without accounting for variation in density and other parameters with depth. By starting after closure, these models do not account for settlements during construction. The use of entire depth does not allow for the calculation of strains at different depths. When landfills are …

Impact Of Geographical Information Systems On Geotechnical Engineering, J. David Rogers, Ronaldo Luna Apr 2004

Impact Of Geographical Information Systems On Geotechnical Engineering, J. David Rogers, Ronaldo Luna

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Over the last four decades Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have emerged as the predominant medium for graphic representation of geospatial data, including geotechnical, geologic and hydrologic information routinely used by geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineers. GIS allow unlimited forms of spatial data to be co-mingled, weighted and sorted with any number of physical or environmental factors. These data can also be combined with weighted political and aesthetic values to create hybrid graphic products capable of swaying public perceptions and decision making. The downside of some GIS products is that their apparent efficacy and crispness can also be deceptive, if data of …

Biography Of James L. Van Etten, Christen Brownlee

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Green algae, in surface layers of almost every lake or stream, are some of the most common aquatic creatures. However, unbeknownst to researchers until recently, viruses that infect algae are almost as widespread. Entire ecosystems of algal hosts and their corresponding viruses lay hidden until the 1980s, when James L. Van Etten, a professor of plant pathology at the University of Nebraska (Lincoln), and his colleague Russ Meints discovered and began to characterize the first member of what is now a rapidly expanding family of algal viruses. Van Etten and his colleagues have continued to study these intriguing viruses, focusing …

An Evolutionary Algorithmic Approach To Learning A Bayesian Network From Complete Data, Ferat Sahin, Jason C. Tillett, Raghuveer Rao, T. M. Rao Apr 2004

An Evolutionary Algorithmic Approach To Learning A Bayesian Network From Complete Data, Ferat Sahin, Jason C. Tillett, Raghuveer Rao, T. M. Rao

Presentations and other scholarship

Discovering relationships between variables is crucial for interpreting data from large databases. Relationships between variables can be modeled using a Bayesian network. The challenge of learning a Bayesian network from a complete dataset grows exponentially with the number of variables in the database and the number of states in each variable. It therefore becomes important to identify promising heuristics for exploring the space of possible networks. This paper utilizes an evolutionary algorithmic approach, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to perform this search. A fundamental problem with a search for a Bayesian network is that of handling cyclic networks, which are not …

An Articulation Of Science Curricula In Grades Seven Through Twelve, Mary C. Donaldson Clark Apr 2004

An Articulation Of Science Curricula In Grades Seven Through Twelve, Mary C. Donaldson Clark

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this articulation was to align the science curriculum of the Lower Cape May Regional School District with the New Jersey State Core Content Standards and to articulate the 7th and 8th grades curricula with that of the high school. Faculty participated in a summer workshop to develop a curriculum map and to set benchmarks to identify student achievement. A survey was developed and distributed to members of the science and mathematics departments to isolate problems with the curricula and to determine the extent of professional development needed in each department. A second survey was furnished to the …
