The Effects Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs) On Nerve Growth Factor (Ngf) In The Developing Frog, Xenopus Laevis, Cari Delong Apr 2004

The Effects Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs) On Nerve Growth Factor (Ngf) In The Developing Frog, Xenopus Laevis, Cari Delong

Honors Theses

Polychlorinated biphenyls are ubiquitous, persistent environmental contaminants that cause a variety of adverse health effects wildlife and humans. PCBs are the major contaminant in the Kalamazoo River Superfund Site, in which the Environmental Institute is funded to study. Projects at the Environmental Institute are focused on developing molecular biotechnology tools that will improve environmental risk assessment. Previous acute studies involved the exposure of developing tadpoles, Xenopus laevis to PCBs through aquarium water in order to measure gene expression. Nerve growth factor (NGF) gene expression showed changes in these previous studies. NGF is a neurotrophic factor that regulates the growth and …

Identification And Characterization Of A Novel Human Myeloid Inhibitory C-Type Lectin-Like Receptor (Micl) That Is Predominantly Expressed On Granulocytes And Monocytes, Andrew S.J. Marshall, Janet A. Willmen, Hsi Hsien Lin, David L. Williams, Siamon Gordon, Gordon D. Brown

ETSU Faculty Works

Inhibitory and activatory C-type lectin-like receptors play an important role in immunity through the regulation of leukocytes. Here, we report the identification and characterization of a novel myeloid inhibitory C-type lectin-like receptor (MICL) whose expression is primarily restricted to granulocytes and monocytes. This receptor, which contains a single C-type lectin-like domain and a cytoplasmic immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motif, is related to LOX-1 (lectin-like receptor for oxidized low density lipoprotein-1) and the β-glucan receptor (Dectin-1) and is variably spliced and highly N-glycosylated. We demonstrate that it preferentially associates with the signaling phosphatases SHP-1 and SHP-2, but not with SHIP. Novel chimeric …

Auditory Sensitivity Of Sergeant Majors (Abudefduf Saxatilis) From Post-Settlement Juvenile To Adult, Sarah A. Egner Apr 2004

Auditory Sensitivity Of Sergeant Majors (Abudefduf Saxatilis) From Post-Settlement Juvenile To Adult, Sarah A. Egner

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is much evidence supporting the idea that pelagic larvae of coral reef fishes are active participants in their dispersal and return to a reef, however, the mechanisms used to navigate are still uncertain. It has been proposed that sensory cues, such as hearing, play a role. Sound is a potentially important cue for organisms in marine environments, especially in noisy environments like coral reefs. Sensory organs, including otolithic organs, of most coral reef fish form within the first few days of life. The auditory brainstem response (ABR) technique was used to measure hearing on a wide size range of …

Biological Indicators Of Wetland Health: Comparing Qualitative And Quantitative Vegetation Measures With Anuran Measures, Shannon M. Gonzalez Apr 2004

Biological Indicators Of Wetland Health: Comparing Qualitative And Quantitative Vegetation Measures With Anuran Measures, Shannon M. Gonzalez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Understanding wetland responses to human perturbations is essential to the effective management of Florida's surface and ground water resources. Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) Rules (Chapter 40D-2.301(c) FAC) prohibit adverse environmental effects to wetlands, fish and wildlife caused by groundwater withdrawal. Numerous studies have documented the responses of biological attributes across taxa and regions to human disturbance. Biological assessment can provide information about ecological condition. Based on long-term monitoring conducted by the SWFWMD, the anthropogenic changes observed on the Starkey Wellfield are attributed to groundwater withdrawal.

Biological indicators are species, species assemblages, or communities whose presence, abundance, and condition …

Effects Of Gloves And Visual Acuity On Dexterity, Mehdi Pourmoghani Apr 2004

Effects Of Gloves And Visual Acuity On Dexterity, Mehdi Pourmoghani

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Work in many environments with chemical or biological agents requires the use of personal protective equipment such as gloves and respirators. It is well established that glove thickness affects finger dexterity. There is further evidence that visual constraints (e.g., visual acuity) and gender may also impede finger dexterity. Therefore, the personal protection may place a barrier to the agent, but performance or productivity will decrease. The purpose of this study is to examine the potential effects of gloves and visual acuity as well as gender and first order interactions on task performance using standard dexterity tests.

Five men and five …

Evaluation Of The Escherichia Coli Threonine Deaminase Gene As A Selectable Marker For Plant Transformation, A. Ebmeier, L. Allison, Heriberto D. Cerutti, Thomas E. Clemente Apr 2004

Evaluation Of The Escherichia Coli Threonine Deaminase Gene As A Selectable Marker For Plant Transformation, A. Ebmeier, L. Allison, Heriberto D. Cerutti, Thomas E. Clemente

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

The initial step in the synthesis of isoleucine (Ile) is the conversion of threonine to α-ketobutyrate. This reaction is carried out by threonine deaminase (TD), which is feedback-regulated by Ile. Mutations in TD that manifest insensitivity to Ile feedback inhibition result in intracellular accumulation of Ile. Previous reports have shown that in planta expression of the wild-type Escherichia coli TD, ilvA, or an Ile-insensitive mutant designated ilvA-466, increased cellular concentrations of Ile. A structural analog of Ile, L-O-methylthreonine (OMT), is able to compete effectively with Ile during translation and induce cell death. It has been postulated that OMT …
