Dockside Shellfish Aquaculture Project, Smith, B, Jennifer Kennedy, Stanley Sinitski Apr 2004

Dockside Shellfish Aquaculture Project, Smith, B, Jennifer Kennedy, Stanley Sinitski

PREP Reports & Publications

The intent of this project was to train private dock owners and marina personnel how to deploy and maintain “spat collectors” under their docks in an effort to capture commercially important shellfish larvae, scallops and oysters in particular, with a minimum amount of effort and cost. The New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP) provided major funding for this phase of the project, with addition funding from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) and the Gulf of Maine Council (GOMC). This year’s effort expands upon the pilot studies that were funded previously by the New Hampshire Coastal Program (NHCP) and …

Characterization Of Iron Binding In Isca, An Ancient Iron-Sulphur Cluster Assembly Protein, Huangen Ding, Robert J. Clark Apr 2004

Characterization Of Iron Binding In Isca, An Ancient Iron-Sulphur Cluster Assembly Protein, Huangen Ding, Robert J. Clark

Faculty Publications

Iron-sulphur clusters are one of the most common types of redox centre in biology. At least six proteins (IscS, IscU, IscA, HscB, HscA and ferredoxin) have been identified as being essential for the biogenesis of iron-sulphur proteins in bacteria. It has been shown that IscS is a cysteine desulphurase that provides sulphur for iron-sulphur clusters, and that IscU is a scaffold for the IscS-mediated assembly of iron-sulphur clusters. The iron donor for iron-sulphur clusters, however, remains elusive. Here we show that IscA is an iron binding protein with an apparent iron association constant of 3.0 × 1019 M-1, and that …

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of The Method Used To Teach Critical Thinking Skills, Kristen L. May Apr 2004

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of The Method Used To Teach Critical Thinking Skills, Kristen L. May

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of teaching critical thinking skills through the infusion method as used by the Cinnaminson School District's Science Department. With the changing demands of society there comes a need for change in the preparation of students for the future that will be theirs. The sample population for this study was the one hundred and seven of the two hundred and forty freshman enrolled in Cinnaminson High School in the 2003-2004 school year who were taking college prep level earth science. Students were evaluated based on their performance on six activities designed …

Integrating Technology Into The Middle School Social Studies Curriculum, Dawn Stewart

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of integrating technology into the social studies curriculum on the delivery of instructional services to middle school students. The use of integrating technology for the middle school means providing teachers and staff with the opportunity to innovatively and creatively interact in the learning process and enhance learning opportunities for students as they strive to attain the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in Social Studies. Training had been provided by the representative from the textbook publisher on how to use the supplemental curriculum materials as well as the building technology …

Ab Initio Studies Of Π⋯Π Interactions: The Effects Of Quadruple Excitations, Brian W. Hopkins, Gregory S. Tschumper Apr 2004

Ab Initio Studies Of Π⋯Π Interactions: The Effects Of Quadruple Excitations, Brian W. Hopkins, Gregory S. Tschumper

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

To examine the effects of including quadruple excitations in the electron correlation treatment when computing the binding energy of van der Waals dimers, we have calculated MP2, CCSD, CCSD(T), and CCSD(TQ) interaction energies for several van der Waals complexes ranging from helium dimer to furan dimer. Through comparison of CCSD(TQ) and CCSD(T) binding energies the first direct assessment of the effects of quadruple excitations on π⋯π interactions is presented. The influence of triple excitations is assessed not only in the conventional manner that permeates the literature (comparison of CCSD(T) and MP2 interaction energies) but also via comparison of CCSD(T) and …

Conversion Of Myoblasts To Physiologically Active Neuronal Phenotype, Yumi Watanabe, Sei Kameoka, Vidya Gopalakrishnan, Kenneth D Aldape, Zhizhong Z Pan, Frederick F Lang, Sadhan Majumder

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Repressor element 1 (RE1)-silencing transcription factor (REST)/neuron-restrictive silencer factor (NRSF) can repress several terminal neuronal differentiation genes by binding to a specific DNA sequence (RE1/neuron-restrictive silencer element [NRSE]) present in their regulatory regions. REST-VP16 binds to the same RE1/NRSE, but activates these REST/NRSF target genes. However, it is unclear whether REST-VP16 expression is sufficient to cause formation of functional neurons either from neural stem cells or from heterologous stem cells. Here we show that the expression of REST-VP16 in myoblasts grown under muscle differentiation conditions blocked entry into the muscle differentiation pathway, countered endogenous REST/NRSF-dependent repression, activated the REST/NRSF target …
