Protection From The Effects Of Ultraviolet Radiation By The Encapsulating Structures Of Embryos Of Physa, A Freshwater Pulmonate Snail, Stacy Nielsen '04 Apr 2004

Protection From The Effects Of Ultraviolet Radiation By The Encapsulating Structures Of Embryos Of Physa, A Freshwater Pulmonate Snail, Stacy Nielsen '04

Honors Projects

The genus Physa includes freshwater pulmonate snails that inhabit shallow environments well within depths penetrated by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The distribution patterns of egg masses of Physa sp. indicate that the snails lay egg masses in sunlit areas and the masses are attached to rocks and debris such as leaves and twigs. Each mass consists of a viscous jelly covering that encases a variable number of embryos, and each of the embryos is individually surrounded by an egg capsule. Field-collected masses were found to have debris and epifaunal organisms attached to the jelly. Preliminary studies of the effect of UV …

Molecular-Dynamics Simulation Of The Effect Of Ions On A Liquid–Liquid Interface For A Partially Miscible Mixture, Richard L. Rowley, Kent E. Wardle, Eric Carlson, Douglas Henderson Apr 2004

Molecular-Dynamics Simulation Of The Effect Of Ions On A Liquid–Liquid Interface For A Partially Miscible Mixture, Richard L. Rowley, Kent E. Wardle, Eric Carlson, Douglas Henderson

Faculty Publications

Molecular-dynamics simulations were performed to model the effect of added salt ions on the liquid-liquid interface in a partially miscible system. Simulations of the interface between saturated phases of a model 1-hexanol + water system show a bilayer structure of 1-hexanol molecules at the interface with OH heads of the first layer directed into the water phase and the opposite orientation for the second layer. The alignment of the polar OH groups at the interface stabilizes a charge separation of sodium and chloride ions when salt is introduced into the aqueous phase, producing an electrical double layer. Chloride ions aggregate …

The Anchor, Volume 117.25: April 21, 2004, Hope College

The Anchor: 2004

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Fluorescence Detectors For Proteins And Toxic Heavy Metals, Uchenna Prince Paul Apr 2004

Fluorescence Detectors For Proteins And Toxic Heavy Metals, Uchenna Prince Paul

Theses and Dissertations

An inexpensive detector for proteins is described. The detection technique was based on two-photon excitation intrinsic protein fluorescence using a visible 532 nm diode-pumped nano laser as the excitation source. Proteins that exhibit intrinsic fluorescence must contain at least one tryptophan, tyrosine, or phenylalanine residue in their amino acid sequences. The detector was characterized and was found to have a detection limit of 4 micro-molar for tryptophan, 22 micro-molar for tyrosine and 500 micro-molar for phenylalanine. Bovine serum albumin, a serum protein with 3 tryptophan residues in its amino acid sequence was also used to characterize the detector. It was …

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(excerpt) "I am especially pleased to be among you, because I have had the gift of reflecting on worship in the ELCA in the past, thanks to the late Paul Nelson of blessed memory and Scott Weidler of your Worship Office. They asked me to create a video series to accompany The Use of the Means of Grace. Perhaps some of you know that series. It’s entitled These Things Matter: Word, Baptism and Communion. A second video series I help develop was a Lenten series of reflections on worship entitled God is Here!"

Calculation Of The Radiation Trapping Force For Laser Tweezers By Use Of Generalized Lorenz-Mie Theory. I. Localized Model Description Of An On-Axis Tightly Focused Laser Beam With Spherical Aberration, James A. Lock Apr 2004

Calculation Of The Radiation Trapping Force For Laser Tweezers By Use Of Generalized Lorenz-Mie Theory. I. Localized Model Description Of An On-Axis Tightly Focused Laser Beam With Spherical Aberration, James A. Lock

Physics Faculty Publications

Calculation of the radiation trapping force in laser tweezers by use of generalized Lorenz-Mie theory requires knowledge of the shape coefficients of the incident laser beam. The localized version of these coefficients has been developed and justified only for a moderately focused Gaussian beam polarized in the x direction and traveling in the positive z direction. Here the localized model is extended to a beam tightly focused and truncated by a high-numerical-aperture lens, aberrated by its transmission through the wall of the sample cell, and incident upon a spherical particle whose center is on the beam axis. We also consider …
