School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

This is a report of analysis of 15th c bone materials from the site of Akurvík in NW Iceland excavated in 1990. A small international project in Árneshreppur district recovered a series of stratified midden deposits associated with small turf structures on an eroding beachfront. Radiocarbon dates identify at least two major phases of occupation and use, one extending into the mid 13th century, and the other dating to the mid 15th century. This report documents the animal bone collection from the later 15th c occupation. Dominated by cod fish, these deposits appear to be the product of seasonal fishery …

Struktur Komunitas Teripang (Holothuroidea) Di Beberapa Perairan Pantai Kai Besar, Maluku Tenggara, Eddy Yusron, Pitra Widianwari

Makara Journal of Science

Holothurian (Holothuroidea) Community Structure in Some Coastal Waters of Kai Besar Island, South-East Maluku. During October and November 1990 the holothurian community inhabiting littoral areas was assessed at five locations : Borang, Ohoiwait, Nuwahan, Wahadan and Kurit Wur. This involved five ecological indices: density, species richness, diversity, evenness and similarity. It was revealed that the holothurian community consisted of 14 species in which five among them occurred in all locations at higher densities: Holothuria edulis, H. scabra, H. nobilis, H. atra and Stichopus chloronatus. Small variations of the ecological indices at all locations may indicate that the community characteristics at …

Dominasi Cyanobacteria Pada Musim Peralihan Di Perairan Laut Banda Dan Sekitarnya, Agus Sediadi

Makara Journal of Science

Domination of Cyanobacteria at Transition Monsoon around Banda Sea Area. Banda Sea had affected by monsoon factor, this condition also influenced fitoplankton condition, but information about fitoplankton condition especially Cyanobacteria group still not complete yet. Therefore had done the researched about fitoplankton in October 1998 and November 1999, that months is regarded as vice of transition monsoon. Fitoplankton samples were taken from the surface to 200 m depth to known the abundant, composition, and distribution of Cyanobacteria. The results showed that the abundant of Trichodesmium erahtraeum varied between 0.02-1.2 x 102 coloni m-3, the highest vale found in 100 m …

Feasibility Of Site-Specific Management Of Corn Hybrids And Plant Densities In The Great Plains, J.F. Shanahan, Thomas A. Doerge, Jerry J. Johnson, Merle F. Vigil Apr 2004

Feasibility Of Site-Specific Management Of Corn Hybrids And Plant Densities In The Great Plains, J.F. Shanahan, Thomas A. Doerge, Jerry J. Johnson, Merle F. Vigil

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The goal of this research was to determine the potential for use of site-specific management of corn hybrids and plant densities in dryland landscapes of the Great Plains by determining (1) within-field yield variation, (2) yield response of different hybrids and plant densities to variability, and (3) landscape attributes associated with yield variation. This work was conducted on three adjacent fields in eastern Colorado during the 1997, -98, and -99 seasons. Treatments consisted of a combination of two hybrids (early and late maturity) and four plant densities (24,692, 37,037, 49,382 and 61,727 plants ha-1) seeded in replicated long …

Penapisan Galur Kedelai Glycine Max (L.) Merrill Toleran Terhadap Nacl Untuk Penanaman Di Lahan Salin, Ratna Yuniati

Makara Journal of Science

Screening of Soybean Cultivars Glycine max (L.) Merrill under Sodium Chloride Stress Condition. Salinity is one of the most serious and widespread agricultural problems resulting in losses of yield. Generally, as land is more intensively cultivated, the salinity problem becomes more severe. A high concentration of NaCl greatly reduces growth of both the shoot and the root. One strategy available to cope with saline soil is to choose salt-tolerance crops or to select salt-tolerance cultivars within a crop. Experiments were conducted to asses the performance of ten cultivars soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merrill) to salt stress at germination and seedling …

Modulasi Junction Antar Sel Menggunakan Peptida Kadherin Upaya Meningkatkan Penghantaran Obat, Ernawati Sinaga, Seetharama Seetharama Jois, Mike Avery, Irwan Makagiansar

Makara Journal of Science

Modulation of Intercellular Junction by Utilization of Cadherin Peptides as an Effort to Improve Drug Delivery. Rapid advances in combinatorial chemistry and molecular biology has influenced the discovery of many proteins, peptides and peptidomimetics as potential therapeutic agents. Unfortunately, the practical application of these potential drugs is often restricted by the difficulties of delivering them to target site(s) due to the presence of biological barriers. Recently, a new method to improve the drug delivery, that is by modulating the intercellular junction, has been evaluated. Modulation of intercellular junction could be achieved by modulating the proteins which play important role in …

On The Formulation Of Ph-Sensitive Liposomes With Long Circulation Times, Sérgio Simões, João Nuno Moreira, Cristina Fonseca, Nejat Düzgüneş, Maria C. Pedroso De Lima Apr 2004

On The Formulation Of Ph-Sensitive Liposomes With Long Circulation Times, Sérgio Simões, João Nuno Moreira, Cristina Fonseca, Nejat Düzgüneş, Maria C. Pedroso De Lima

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Strategies used to enhance liposome-mediated drug delivery in vivo include the enhancement of stability and circulation time in the bloodstream, targeting to specific tissues or cells, and facilitation of intracytoplasmic delivery. pH-sensitive liposomes have been developed to mediate the introduction of highly hydrophilic molecules or macromolecules into the cytoplasm. These liposomes destabilize under acidic conditions found in the endocytotic pathway, and usually contain phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and titratable stabilizing amphiphiles. Formulations without PE have also been developed. Encapsulated compounds are thought to be transported into the cytoplasm through destabilization of or fusion with the endosome membrane. Incorporation of a low mole …

Jnk Regulates Hipk3 Expression And Promotes Resistance To Fas-Mediated Apoptosis In Du 145 Prostate Carcinoma Cells, James Curtin, Thomas Cotter Apr 2004

Jnk Regulates Hipk3 Expression And Promotes Resistance To Fas-Mediated Apoptosis In Du 145 Prostate Carcinoma Cells, James Curtin, Thomas Cotter

Articles

Elevated endogenous JNK activity and resistance to Fas receptor-mediated apoptosis have recently been implicated in progression of prostate cancer and can promote resistance to apoptosis in response to chemotherapeutic drugs. In addition, JNK has been demonstrated to promote transformation of epithelial cells by increasing both proliferation and survival. Although numerous studies have reported a role for JNK in promoting Fas receptor-mediated apoptosis, there is a paucity in the literature studying the antiapoptotic function of JNK during Fas receptor-mediated apoptosis. Consequently, we have used the recently described specific JNK inhibitor SP600125 and RNA interference to inhibit endogenous JNK activity in the …
