Snow Avalanche Disturbance In Intermountain Spruce-Fir Forests And Implications For The Spruce Bark Beetle (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), Elizabeth G. Herbertson May 2004

Snow Avalanche Disturbance In Intermountain Spruce-Fir Forests And Implications For The Spruce Bark Beetle (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), Elizabeth G. Herbertson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Spruce beetle outbreaks are the primary biotic disturbance affecting forests in the Intermountain spruce-fir zone. Major snow avalanches can produce large quantities of host material for spruce beetle colonization; however, few studies have examined the influence of avalanche disturbance on outbreak initiation. The purpose of my research was to investigate potential relationships between these two disturbance agents. In the first study, I used dendro-ecological analyses to date major avalanche years on the Wasatch Plateau in south-central Utah, and then determined what climate factors were associated with avalanche occurrence. The results indicated that mean January snowfall was significantly related to the …

Identification Of A Novel Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Transcript Containing A Small Open Reading Frame That Is Expressed In Trigeminal Ganglia Of Latently Infected Cattle, Melissa Inman, Joe Zhou, Heather Webb, Clinton J. Jones May 2004

Jones

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1), like other Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily members, establishes latency in sensory neurons. The latency-related (LR) RNA is abundantly expressed during latency, and expression of an LR protein is required for the latency reactivation cycle in cattle. Within LR promoter sequences, a 135-aminoacid open reading frame (ORF) was identified, ORF-E, that is antisense to the LR RNA. ORF-E is also downstream of the gene encoding the major viral transcriptional activator, bICP0. Strand-specific reverse transcription-PCR demonstrated that a transcript containing ORF-E was consistently expressed in trigeminal ganglia (TG) of latently infected calves, productively infected cultured cells, and acutely infected calves. …

Restoration And Management Of Gray Wolves In Central Idaho - Progress Report 2003, Curt Mack, Jim Holyan May 2004

Restoration And Management Of Gray Wolves In Central Idaho - Progress Report 2003, Curt Mack, Jim Holyan

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery: Annual Reports

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is restoring endangered gray wolves to the northern Rocky Mountains including ongoing efforts in 3 restoration areas: Northwest Montana, the Greater Yellowstone Area, and Central Idaho. Gray wolves naturally recolonized northwest Montana and were down-listed to threatened status under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 2003. Nonessential experimental population areas were established for the Greater Yellowstone and Central Idaho Areas where wolves were actively reintroduced under the ESA. This special designation allows for management flexibility to address public concerns such as wolf-livestock conflicts.

In 2003 the USFWS reclassified gray wolves across the lower …

Emergency Preparedness: A Manual For Homeless Service Providers, Kelly Tobin, Phyllis Freeman May 2004

Emergency Preparedness: A Manual For Homeless Service Providers, Kelly Tobin, Phyllis Freeman

Center for Social Policy Publications

Public attention to "emergency planning" has increased dramatically since 9/11/2001. Out of concern that the population of homeless individuals and families may not have been considered adequately in planning thus far, the Center for Social Policy reviewed what has occurred, sought advice about what would be useful to add to existing material and resources, and proceeded to prepare this Manual. It seemed all too likely that under the already considerable pressure for cities and towns to prepare for threats caused by terrorism, including bioterrorism, that the special characteristics of homeless families and individuals, and of community organizations serving homeless people, …

Women’S Constructions Of Women: On Entering The Front Door, Myria Vassiliadou May 2004

Women’S Constructions Of Women: On Entering The Front Door, Myria Vassiliadou

Journal of International Women's Studies

Despite the vast volume of scholarly work on Mediterranean and the Near East the region, issues of marginalisation, discrimination, racism, and ethnic-gender groups as well as the implications of these within the context of various wider forces and structures are only lately receiving any attention at all and this paper is part of an effort to explore and expose them. The aim of this paper is to explore this otherwise forgotten area through the example of Cypriot women and their interpretations of internal ‘Others’ in Cyprus. It is thus an attempt to analyze the discourses and images adopted by women …

Re-Visioning Science Education, Ingrid Bartsch May 2004

Re-Visioning Science Education, Ingrid Bartsch

Journal of International Women's Studies

Science education is crucial for shaping the culture of science and its practitioners. Boundaries currently limit ties between natural and social science education structures, exposing the public to a one-dimensional science and its possible ramifications. Believing this to be a “crisis,” I explore a variety of approaches to re-visioning science education and the ensuing forms of resistance that these face. In addition, a more personal accounting of my experience with trying to integrate social and cultural issues into the education of scientists allows me to explore the forms of resistance I faced; bridge the gap between theory and practice; and …

Dysacademia In The Ivory Towers: Performativity, Discipline, Control & Chaotically Moving Towards The Shadows Of The 3rd Educational Spaces, Paul René Geisler May 2004

Dysacademia In The Ivory Towers: Performativity, Discipline, Control & Chaotically Moving Towards The Shadows Of The 3rd Educational Spaces, Paul René Geisler

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This theoretical inquiry is based upon an archaeological and genealogical deconstruction of the character, utility and state of being of the modern university in the United States. In introducing Dysacademia as an apt metaphor for today's dysfunctional academy, the current discursive analysis describes the various affects and effects that neoliberalism, performativity, discipline, and control have had upon the inorganic institutions of higher learning, and upon its primary subject concerns, the organic constituents known as the professoriate and the student body. As a follow up to this Ivory Tower deconstruction, a reconstructive enunciation is shaped using a conglomeration of postmodern, open …

Full-time agriculturalists were attending the workshops and/or meetings …

Molecular Modeling And Experimental Determination Of The Structure Of C8 -Arylguanine Modified Oligonucleotides That Preferentially Adopt The Z -Dna Conformation, Sue Ellen Heavner May 2004

Molecular Modeling And Experimental Determination Of The Structure Of C8 -Arylguanine Modified Oligonucleotides That Preferentially Adopt The Z -Dna Conformation, Sue Ellen Heavner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Thermal denaturation, circular dichroism, and NMR have been used extensively in conformational studies of oligonucleotides. Molecular modeling has become a powerful, if not essential, complement to these experimental techniques. To study the effects of C8-arylated purine adducts caused by carcinogenic aryl hydrazines we combined the two approaches. Two oligonucleotides were prepared, an unmodified oligonucleotide d(5'CGCGCGCGCG 3') and a C8-phenylguanine modified oligonucleotide d( 5'CGCGCG*CGCG3') (G* = 8-phenylguanine). These oligonucleotides were compared using thermal denaturation, circular dichroism, and NMR. The phenyl modification destabilizes the B DNA form and stabilizes the Z DNA form such that the B:Z ratio is near one under …

Brook Trout Bioenergetics And The Use Of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis For Proximate Composition, Marlin Keith Cox Ii May 2004

Brook Trout Bioenergetics And The Use Of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis For Proximate Composition, Marlin Keith Cox Ii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Three aspects of a bioenergetics model were examined for brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) in the laboratory: (1) refinement of the metabolism parameter estimations, (2) calculation of activity rates and (3) subsequent validation of the brook trout model. An integral part of bioenergetics modeling is the initial inputs of predator and prey energy density from body composition estimations. We present bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) as a means of rapidly estimating body composition in fish and then adjusted variables that may affect these predictions. We also used this tool and applied it to a compensatory growth study. Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) were …

The Influence Of Environmental Temperature And Substrate Initial Moisture Content On Aspergillus Niger Growth And Phytase Production In Solid−State Cultivation, Seaborn B. Carter, Sue E. Nokes, Czarena L. Crofcheck

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Aspergillus niger is being used commercially for phytase production utilizing solid-state cultivation; however, no studies have been published that investigated the optimal environmental temperature and initial substrate water content to maximize fungal growth and/or phytase production. Solid-state cultivations of Aspergillus niger on wheat bran and soybean meal were conducted at three temperatures (25°C, 30°C, and 35°C) and three initial moisture contents (50%, 55%, and 60% wet basis) in a split-plot full-factorial experimental design. Fermentations were conducted for 0, 24, 48, 72, and 120 h. The containers were sampled destructively and assayed for phytase activity and glucosamine concentration as an estimate …

Contemporary Visions Of Progress In Ecology And Thoughts For The Future, Brian M. Starzomski, Bradley J. Cardinale, Jennifer A. Dunne, Melinda J. Hillery, Carrie A. Holt, Meg A. Krawchuk, Melissa Lage, Sean Mcmahon, Michael C. Melnychuk

Research outputs pre 2011

Although ecological research is progressing rapidly, the answers to certain key questions continue to elude us. This paper considers several of the contemporary challenges facing ecology. (1) Terminology is voluminous and often poorly defined, resulting in inefficient communication. (2) The concept of scale affects our inferences about system structure and function, requiring us to continue an almost heuristic investigation of breaks, domains, and integration. New tools that more explicitly incorporate scalar issues will need to be developed for progress to take place in the field of ecology. (3) Increasingly, it is expected that applied questions will be solved in less …

Population Ecology And Expansion Dynamics Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs In Western North Dakota, Sara Ann Milne May 2004

Population Ecology And Expansion Dynamics Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs In Western North Dakota, Sara Ann Milne

Theses and Dissertations

Black-tailed prairie dog* (Cynomyt ludlvicianus) are a keystone species that were once widespread throughout the Great Plains. Beginning in the 1900* however, black- tailed prairie dogs experienced serious reductions in range an numbers such that recent estimates suggest they inhabit only 2% of their historic range. As a result of the decline in numbers and range, black-tailed prairie dogs arc currently a candidate species for protection under the endangered species act. Because of the species’ status as a candidate species and their importance as a keystone species, conservation biologists and resource managers are interested in developing effective management approaches directed …

A Random Boolean Network Model And Deterministic Chaos, Mihaela Teodora Matache, Jack Heidel May 2004

A Random Boolean Network Model And Deterministic Chaos, Mihaela Teodora Matache, Jack Heidel

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This paper considers a simple Boolean network with N nodes, each node’s state at time t being determined by a certain number of parent nodes, which may vary from one node to another. This is an extension of a model studied by Andrecut and Ali ( [5]) who consider the same number of parents for all nodes. We make use of the same Boolean rule as the authors of [5], provide a generalization of the formula for the probability of finding a node in state 1 at a time t and use simulation methods to generate consecutive states of the …

The Effects Of Manganese On Oxidative Dna Damage In Mesencephalic Cells., Ching-Ping Shih May 2004

The Effects Of Manganese On Oxidative Dna Damage In Mesencephalic Cells., Ching-Ping Shih

Theses (Pre-2016)

Occupational workers who are exposed to manganese (Mn2+) manifest neural degeneration resembling Parkinson's disease (PD). In the treatments of PD, the \" manipulation of dopamine (DA) concentrations is often utilized. Such manipulations seem to increase DA turnover, but increased DA may also have a deleterious effect. In several cell culture models, it has been shown that Mn2+ interacts with cellular DA and caused dopaminergic cell death. Thus, DA modulation at cellular level induced change in Mn2+and DA interaction eventually causes cell death in vulnerable brain areas. Mn2+ in cell culture model appears to induce DNA fragmentation and cell death through …

Determination Of Arsenic By High Performance Liquid Chromatography Using A Transition Metal C18 Column, Charlotte Anitra Smith May 2004

Determination Of Arsenic By High Performance Liquid Chromatography Using A Transition Metal C18 Column, Charlotte Anitra Smith

Theses (Pre-2016)

Arsenic, a metalloid, occurs naturally in drinking water and has become a major concern in recent years. There have been several reports on the analysis of arsenic utilizing high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with element specific detectors such as atomic absorption detector. The major goal of this research was to develop a method to analyze arsenic HPLC with UV detection. The success of the present research will help other laboratories that are not financially able to have the state of- the-art instruments. Our research focused on method development for the determination of As(ill) and As(V) using reversed-phase HPLC with a …

The Skull Valley Goshute And Nuclear Waste: Rhetorical Analysis Of Claims-Making Of Opponents And Proponents, Jesse T. Weiss May 2004

The Skull Valley Goshute And Nuclear Waste: Rhetorical Analysis Of Claims-Making Of Opponents And Proponents, Jesse T. Weiss

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One of the greatest challenges to modem society is the management and disposal of hazardous by-products that have accompanied the industrial advances of the twentieth century. One of the most difficult by-products to deal with has been radioactive waste. Previous research has shown that due to the real and perceived risks associated with this type of waste, the burden of storing said waste has fallen on minority communities, including Native American groups. This research examines the proposed temporary nuclear waste storage facility to be located on the Skull Valley Indian Reservation in Utah. Using an ethnographic case study approach, this …

A Study Of Invasive Species Cover Near Roads In A Red Rock Canyon Blackbrush Community, Christopher Keough May 2004

A Study Of Invasive Species Cover Near Roads In A Red Rock Canyon Blackbrush Community, Christopher Keough

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The monitoring of Mojave Desert plant communities during and following disturbance is an important process that could provide invaluable information about disturbance/recovery regimes in similar arid environments across the globe. Blackbrush communities are of particular interest because of their low replacement rate, which makes them highly susceptible to disturbance. Roads in the Mojave Desert have been associated with soil compaction resulting in a lack of vegetation as well as an increase in invasive species cover in the immediate proximity. To investigate these statements, eight fifty-foot line transects were established in each of three plot types (perpendicular to dirt roads, perpendicular …
