Wild Dreamers: Meditations On The Admissibiity Of Dream Talk, Louise Harmon
Wild Dreamers: Meditations On The Admissibiity Of Dream Talk, Louise Harmon
Washington Law Review
This article presents a mosaic of interrelated meditations on how judges have dealt with the admissibility of dream talk, interspersed with short digressions on the meaning of dreams from a variety of historical and cultural perspectives. In Part I, I begin with theories about dreams from Aristotle, Hobbes, and others. I then tell the story of O.J. Simpson, wild dreamer extraordinaire, interrupted by a Freudian interlude and a speculation about the theories that the jurors may have silently applied to Simpson's dreams of killing his wife. In Part II, I present three wild dreamers from family court: a husband who …

Investigation Into The Spatial And Temporal Dynamics Of Stomatal Networks To Determine Whether Plants Perform Emergent, Distributed Computation, Jevin West
Biology
This research studies the spatial and temporal dynamics of stomatal patchiness in order to investigate the possibility that plants solve their problem of adjusting stomatal aperture in order to maximize CO2 uptake while minimizing H2O loss through an emergent, distributed computation. An extensive study is done on qualitative and quantitative characteristics of stomatal patchiness, and improved imaging techniques are developed to more fully capture the dynamics. In doing so, soliton-like structures were discovered. Sequences of chlorophyll fluorescence images of Xanthium strumarium leaves were then compared to image sequences of cellular computer simulations that solve problems via emergent, …
Analysis Of Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-Biphosphate And Inositol 1,4,5-Triphosphate In Dehydration And Cold-Stressed Arabidopsis Thaliana, James E. Thompson
Analysis Of Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-Biphosphate And Inositol 1,4,5-Triphosphate In Dehydration And Cold-Stressed Arabidopsis Thaliana, James E. Thompson
Biology
During dehydration and cold stress, Arabidopsis thaliana (A. thaliana) plant cells mobilize calcium into their cytosol to elicit changes in gene expression that enable them to tolerate stress. It has been unclear how dehydration-stressed plant cells receive and transmit the signal that results in promoting increases in intracellular calcium concentration. Previously, phosphatidylinositol 4,5-biphosphate (PtdIns(4,5)P2) and inositol 1,4,5 triphosphate (Ins(1,4,5)P3) have been shown to accumulate and cause calcium mobilization in osmotically stressed A. thaliana. However, it was unknown whether the same occurred in plants exposed to other abiotic stresses. Data presented in this thesis …
Stoichiometric And Environmental Controls Of Consumer-Driven Nutrient Recycling In Steams, John D. Rothlisberger
Stoichiometric And Environmental Controls Of Consumer-Driven Nutrient Recycling In Steams, John D. Rothlisberger
Biology
I investigated the environmental control of consumer-mediated nutrient recycling (CNR) in sub-alpine streams by evaluating the effects of water temperature and food elemental composition on the rates and ratios of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) excretion by macroinvertebrates. I predicted that biomass-specific excretion rates would be positively correlated with temperature whereas N:P ratios would primarily relate to food N:P ratio. I measured nutrient release by heptagenaiid larvae eating periphyton of varying elemental composition grown on nutrient-diffusing substrates. I hypothesized that skewed ratios of N:P release would result from differential retention of nutrients in the food. Excretion rates of N and …
Studies Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Sphingolipid C4 Hydroxylation And Ipt1 Function And Their Roles In Syringomycin E Action, Jolanta Idkowiak-Baldys
Studies Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Sphingolipid C4 Hydroxylation And Ipt1 Function And Their Roles In Syringomycin E Action, Jolanta Idkowiak-Baldys
Biology
Sphingolipids are ubiquitous membrane components of all eukaryotic cells with important regulatory functions. The roles and biochemistry of two structural features of sphingolipids were studied: C4 hydroxylation and the addition of a terminal phosphoinositol. Structure-function studies of the yeast sphingolipid C4 long chain base hydroxylase (Sur2p) revealed that alanine replacement of any of eight histidine residues from three histidine-rich motifs, as well as additional histidine 249, eliminated hydroxylase activity. Seven additional residues were also found to be important elements of the active site. These results show that Sur2p is a member of the family of eight-histidine motif hydroxylases and desaturates. …

Dynamics Of Pectoral Fin Rowing In A Fish With An Extreme Rowing Stroke: The Threespine Stickleback (Gasterosteus Aculeatus), Jeffrey A. Walker Phd
Dynamics Of Pectoral Fin Rowing In A Fish With An Extreme Rowing Stroke: The Threespine Stickleback (Gasterosteus Aculeatus), Jeffrey A. Walker Phd
Faculty Publications
The dynamics of pectoral fin rowing in the threespine stickleback are investigated by measuring the instantaneous force balance on freely swimming fish throughout the stroke cycle and comparing the measured forces with fin motions and an unsteady, blade-element model of pectoral fin propulsion. Both measured and modeled forces suggest that attached vortex and circulatory forces and not inertial (added mass) forces dominate the force balance. Peak forces occur at midstrokes. There is no evidence for large force peaks at the stroke transitions due to either rapid fin rotation (supination) or rapid fin closure against the body. The energetics of pectoral …

National Science Foundation-Sponsored Workshop Report. Draft Plan For Soybean Genomics, Gary Stacey, Lila N Vodkin, Wayne A. Parrott, Randy C. Shoemaker
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Recent efforts to coordinate and define a research strategy for soybean (Glycine max) genomics began with the establishment of a Soybean Genetics Executive Committee, which will serve as a communication focal point between the soybean research community and granting agencies. Secondly, a workshop was held to define a strategy to incorporate existing tools into a framework for advancing soybean genomics research. This workshop identified and ranked research priorities essential to making more informed decisions as to how to proceed with large scale sequencing and other genomics efforts. Most critical among these was the need to finalize a physical …

Isomerization, Reactivity, And Structural Study Of A Thioperoxide-Bridged Dimolybdenum(V) Dimer., Chi Minh Tuong 1971-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The synthesis of the methyl thioperoxide-bridged dimolybdenum(V) dimer, [Mo2(NTo)2(S2P(OEt)2)2S(O2CMe)(SOMe)], was improved and the compound was structurally characterized by crystallography. The compound proved to be very stable to light and heat. The possibility of photolytic or thermolytic rearrangement of the methyl thioperoxide ligand ( -S-O-R) to a methyl sulfinyl ligand ( -S(=O)R) was investigated. These studies showed that the methyl thioperoxide compound did not produce the desired sulfinyl isomer. The photolyses produced mainly a derivative of the methyl thioperoxide compound, where a hydroxo bridge is thought to have replaced the acetate bridge. Minor products formed in general agreement with the photolysis …

Development Of Ozone Forecast Models For Selected Kentucky Metropolitan Areas., Yiqiu Lin 1971-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ground-level ozone forecast models were developed for the following middle and small metropolitan areas in Kentucky: Ashland, Bowling Green, Owensboro, and Paducah. These models were nonlinear regression models, based on models previously developed for Louisville and Lexington. For each of the four cities, the mean absolute errors (MAE) for the model estimates, based on the 1998-2002 model-fitted data sets, were less than 7.7 ppb; the MAE/O3 were less than 12.7%. The models could explain at least 66% of the variance of the daily peak ozone. On average, the errors of the model were within +/- 15.0 ppb on 88% of …
Dhea Action Is Mediated By Multiple Receptors And Metabolites., Kristy K. Michael Miller
Dhea Action Is Mediated By Multiple Receptors And Metabolites., Kristy K. Michael Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a C-19 adrenal steroid and the most abundant circulating hormone in humans. Since circulating levels decline in late adulthood, treatment of humans with DHEA has been suggested to have beneficial health effects. Although the mechanism of action is unknown, DHEA may be metabolized to active metabolites that exert their physiological effects by receptor-mediated processes and cell signaling pathways. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanistic processes of DHEA action. Since DHEA may exert its pleotropic effects by being metabolized to biologically active species, a GC/MS method was developed to quantify the liver microsomal metabolism …
Frequency Of Rad Diagnosis And Attachment Disorder In Community Mental Health Agency Clients., Paula S. Morgan 1958-
Frequency Of Rad Diagnosis And Attachment Disorder In Community Mental Health Agency Clients., Paula S. Morgan 1958-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Attachment Disorder (AD) in children has been characterized by particularly alarming behaviors, yet the identification of this disorder for clinicians in community mental health agencies is problematic. The only available diagnosis that addresses attachment problems is the DSM-IV diagnosis of Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), a diagnosis that does not include the more severely disturbed behaviors that have been associated with attachment-disordered children. This dissertation examined the frequency with which CMHA child clients were diagnosed with RAD, as well as the actual occurrence of attachment problems and Attachment Disorder as measured by the Randolph Attachment Disorder Questionnaire (RADA). The Personality Inventory …

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the incidence in decalcification between orthodontic patients bonded with either composite resin or resin modified glass ionomer (RMGI) cements. Varying levels of hygiene and treatment time were also evaluated. Methods: Intraoral pre-treatment and post-treatment photographs from patients bonded with either RMGI or composite resin were evaluated for changes in decalcification. Patients were treated by …
The Role Of The Toll-Like Receptor Pathway In Susceptibility To Inflammatory Bowel Disease., Nigel Crawford 1974-
The Role Of The Toll-Like Receptor Pathway In Susceptibility To Inflammatory Bowel Disease., Nigel Crawford 1974-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that is subdivided into Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and indeterminate colitis (IC). Epidemiological studies have proven that genetic variation increases susceptibility to IBD, with multiple abnormal genes combined with environmental factors being responsible for disease development. Characterization of these susceptibility genes remains of critical importance to improving understanding of IBD pathogenesis. The overall aim of this study is to discover new IBD susceptibility genes. The initial approach was to study a number of previously described IBD susceptibility loci through characterization of peak LOD score short tandem repeat markers using …

The Transcriptional Repressor Protein Growth Factor Independence-1b In T Lymphopoiesis., Loretta L. Doan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
T lymphopoiesis has been an intense focus of immunological research since the discovery of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and T cell mediated transplant rejection. Additionally, researchers have long appreciated the role of T cells, and their development, in autoimmune disorders. Interest in this field has increased upon the realization that many leukemic oncoproteins are the very factors that control normal T cell development. Thus, the transcriptional networks that drive the function and development of T lymphocytes are closely linked with disease states.Growth Factor Independence 1 (GFI1) and GFI1B are two very similar transcriptional repressor oncoproteins that are encoded by …

Understanding Perceptions Of Accessibility And Mobility Through Structuration Theory, Mark Graham
Understanding Perceptions Of Accessibility And Mobility Through Structuration Theory, Mark Graham
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Structuration theory in geography states that social systems are reproduced through the relationships between systems, structures, actors and their perceptions. Therefore, understanding the modes through which social systems are reproduced will allow for a clearer understanding of the nature of society. However, much of the relevant social theory has not been empirically tested. Thus, by empirically examining general perceptual differences between different built environments, on a macro and a micro level, it is hoped that the links between perceptions, social structures, and the built environment can be more fully understood. A better understanding of these links will, in turn, allow …
