Drawing Lines In The Sand: Even Skipped Et Al. And Parasegment Boundaries., James B. Jaynes, Miki Fujioka

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

The pair-rule segmentation gene even skipped (eve) is required to activate engrailed stripes and to organize odd-numbered parasegments (PSs). The protein product Eve has been shown to be an active repressor of transcription, and recent models for Eve function suggest that activation of engrailed is indirect, but these models have not been fully tested. Here we identify the forkhead domain transcription factor Sloppy-paired as the key intermediate in the initial activation of engrailed by Eve in odd-numbered parasegments. We also analyze the roles of the transcription factors Runt and Odd-skipped in this process. Detailed analysis of engrailed and pair-rule gene …

The "Fair" Triathlon: Equating Standard Deviations Using Non-Linear Bayesian Models, Steven Mckay Curtis May 2004

The "Fair" Triathlon: Equating Standard Deviations Using Non-Linear Bayesian Models, Steven Mckay Curtis

Theses and Dissertations

The Ironman triathlon was created in 1978 by combining events with the longest distances for races then contested in Hawaii in swimming, cycling, and running. The Half Ironman triathlon was formed using half the distances of each of the events in the Ironman. The Olympic distance triathlon was created by combining events with the longest distances for races sanctioned by the major federations for swimming, cycling, and running. The relative importance of each event in overall race outcome was not given consideration when determining the distances of each of the races in modern triathlons. Thus, there is a general belief …

The Depositional History Of Three Freshwater Lakes In North Central Florida: Brooklyn Lake, Levys Prairie, And Cowpen Lake, Nancy T. Dewitt May 2004

The Depositional History Of Three Freshwater Lakes In North Central Florida: Brooklyn Lake, Levys Prairie, And Cowpen Lake, Nancy T. Dewitt

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Florida has approximately 7800 lakes that are heavily concentrated in the north-central part of the state—a mantled karst terrain. Although much research has been conducted in Florida’s lakes, there is not much information on the sedimentary infill. The focus of this research is to define the sedimentary infill of three closely spaced lakes (Brooklyn Lake, Levys Prairie, and Cowpen Lake) in north-central Florida and determine the relative importance of the various
sedimentary inputs and their associated processes. Interlake lithostratigraphy comparison helped determine if they experienced a similar depositional infilling history or a unique one.

Twenty-three vibracores were taken (12 in …

A Model For Computational Undergraduate Research Using Molecular Orbital Theory And A Low-Cost Unix Workstation, David Raymond Dinsmore

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This research study used current molecular orbital theory and UNIX desktop computer workstations running the PSI suite of programs developed by Dr F. Schaefer group of the Center for Computational Quantum Chemistry at the University of Georgia to investigate the structures and characteristics of several hypothetical hydrogen-lithium compounds. The researcher, a physics professor with no background in computational quantum chemistry, and very limited chemistry background, experienced this project much like an upper-level undergraduate science or mathematics major. Approaching the research experience from the perspective of an undergraduate research student, the researcher was able to gain unique insight into the undergraduate …
