An Investigation Of Soil-Plant And Plant-Animal Mineral Nutrition Landscapes Of Agricultural Areas In The Fairbanks And Delta Junction Regions Of Interior Alaska, Robin N. Andrews
Plant, Animal and Soil Sciences
I attempted to identify biologically limiting minerals and assess mineral variability by collecting soil and plant samples in June, July, and August from 14 bromegrass fields and adjacent woodlands, in the Fairbanks and Delta Junction regions. Soil extractable P, K, Ca, Mg, Al, B, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Zn, NO⁻³ and NH⁴ as well as pH and organic matter content were measured at three depths. Bromus inermis, Calamagrostis canadensis, Epilobium angustifolium and Salix alaxensis were analyzed for N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Al, B, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn. Plant sample variability was assessed by …
Vegetation Reconstruction And Climate Evolution Of Lake Dood, Darhad Basin, Northern Mongolia, Over The Past 4,500 Years, Yiming Wang
Geosciences
A semi-quantitative pollen index and stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen are used to reconstruct late Holocene changes in moisture availability in the Darhad Basin, northern Mongolia. Palynomorphs extracted from cores of lake Dood indicate that the surrounding Darhad Basin was much wetter at 4,200 cal. yrs B.P. Beginning at 2,900 cal. yrs B.P., humidity in the Darhad Basin decreased until 300 cal. yrs B.P. Humidity and warmth returned briefly during the Medieval Warm Epoch, from 1,370 to 930 cal yrs B.P. (AD. 580 to 892). Increasing proportions of forest to steppe pollen types suggests a response to warmer summer …
Change Of Heart Among Aboriginal Canadians Toward The Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Project, 1970-2003, Galina V. Kirsanova
Change Of Heart Among Aboriginal Canadians Toward The Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Project, 1970-2003, Galina V. Kirsanova
Arctic and Northern Studies
The last three decades witnessed an astonishing change of heart among the Mackenzie Valley and Delta's aboriginal groups toward the reemerged Mackenzie Valley Pipeline project and associated industrial development. Vehement confrontation between indigenous residents of the northern Homelands and proponents of a new industrial Frontier has given way to mutually beneficial cooperation. This thesis examines the factors of this attitudinal change. First, the Berger Report and aboriginal testimonies are used to reveal the roots of the previous native opposition to the project, i.e., lack of control, inadequate capacities, and possible threats to subsistence. Next is the analysis of the current …
Through The Looking Glass: Constructing Sexual Identity, Kimberly Ann Foore
Through The Looking Glass: Constructing Sexual Identity, Kimberly Ann Foore
Communication
The present research explored how contemporary women define their sexual identity and communicate their needs/wants for sexual gratification during the act of sexual intimacy. Using human science epistemology, methodology, and methods, eight women's narratives were co-constructed into two emergent themes: Defining sexuality as self-stereotyping identity and Setting the stage for uncertainty as mask. This research explored the unique definitions of sexuality from the co-researchers perspective and ultimately determined that sexual identity is inextricably bound to self-presentation and impression management. It was also discovered that these women communicate their sexual needs nonverbally and 'hide' behind a mask of uncertainty out of …

K8 And K12 Are Biotinylated In Human Histone H4, Gabriela Camporeale, Elizabeth E. Shubert, Gautam Sarath, Ronald Cerny, Janos Zempleni
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Folding of DNA into chromatin is mediated by binding to histones such as H4; association of DNA with histones is regulated by covalent histone modifications, e.g. acetylation, methylation, and biotinylation. We sought to identify aminoacid residues that are biotinylated in histone H4,and to determine whether acetylation and methylation of histones affect biotinylation. Synthetic peptides spanning fragments of human histone H4 were biotinylated enzymatically using biotinidase. Peptide-bound biotin was probed with streptavidin– peroxidase. Peptides based on the N-terminal sequence of histone H4 were effectively recognized by biotinidase as substrates for biotinylation; in contrast, peptides based on the C-terminal sequences were not biotinylated. …

"We Dance Because We Are IñUpiaq", IñUpiaq Dance In Barrow: Performance And Identity, Hiroko Ikuta
"We Dance Because We Are IñUpiaq", IñUpiaq Dance In Barrow: Performance And Identity, Hiroko Ikuta
Anthropology
Dance, like other forms of expressive culture, is an important vehicle for creating, maintaining, and expressing identity. Founded in the early 1950s, the Barrow Dancers, with a membership of more than sixty, perform on important occasions in Alaska and outside the state for Native and non-Native audiences. For the Barrow Dancers, song, gesture, and drumming are means of creating and maintaining continuity in a community undergoing rapid social change. Collectively, the troop appears to dance with greater freedom and innovation for local audiences whereas their commoditized performances for outsiders are more formal and repetitive. The Barrow Dancers also perform at …
Factors Affecting Marine Growth And Survival Of Auke Creek, Alaska Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus Kisutch), Ryan Jordan Briscoe
Factors Affecting Marine Growth And Survival Of Auke Creek, Alaska Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus Kisutch), Ryan Jordan Briscoe
Fisheries
Correlation analyses and stepwise regression models were run to examine relationships between Auke Creek coho salmon marine survival, scale growth, and a number of physical and biological covariates: local sea surface and air temperatures, local precipitation, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, local hatchery release numbers, size at return, and regional and state salmon catch numbers. Jack survival and adult survival covaried strongly, suggesting the primary cause of mortality is encountered in the first four or five months of marine life. The number of hatchery fish had the strongest correlation with marine survival (r = 0.71), which could indicate that hatchery releases …
Application Of Molecular Markers To Mixed-Stock Analysis Of Yukon River Fall Chum Salmon, Blair G. Flannery
Application Of Molecular Markers To Mixed-Stock Analysis Of Yukon River Fall Chum Salmon, Blair G. Flannery
Fisheries
Country of origin provides the basis for allocating harvests of Yukon River chum salmon. The genetic divergence among Yukon River chum salmon populations adjacent to the international border as revealed by allozyme and micro satellite variation is insufficient to determine the country of origin of returning fish using mixed-stock analysis (MSA). Consequently, we investigated the resolution provided by alternative genetic markers in an attempt to detect levels of divergence that would be sufficient for MSA. We analyzed 10 Yukon River chum salmon populations for variation at 30 variable amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) loci and for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction …

Habitat Usage By Flatfish (Pleuronectidae) In The Mendenhall Wetlands, Juneau, Alaska, Lynn A. Mattes
Fisheries
The Mendenhall Wetlands in Juneau, Alaska were sampled with a variety of gear types to determine if the wetlands were essential fish habitat for flatfish. At locations where fish were captured, water quality characteristics were recorded and stomach contents of starry flounder and yellowfin sole were examined. Starry flounder, yellowfin sole, rock sole and flathead sole were captured over the course of the sampling season, both adults and juveniles. Starry flounder were captured in all sampling locations. Starry flounder have the ability to survive in higher temperatures, lower salinities and lower oxygen content than the other species. Yellowfin sole, rock …
Dungeness Crab Depth Distribution: Effects Of Sea Otters, Karen A. Scheding
Dungeness Crab Depth Distribution: Effects Of Sea Otters, Karen A. Scheding
Fisheries
The distribution and abundance of Dungeness crabs in the Glacier Bay area were observed with a submersible in five bays with and three bays without sea otters. A matrix design was used with three levels of sea otter occupation and three depth categories. Goals of this study were to determine: 1) the depth distribution of crabs; 2) if depth was a refuge from sea otter predation; and, 3) the habitat of ovigerous female aggregations. Scuba was used to calibrate submersible counts and collect substrate samples; crab pots were used to confirm submersible sightings. Abiotic and biotic variables were analyzed to …
Effects Of Inbreeding And Family Origin On Size Of Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha) Fry, Cara J. Rodgveller
Effects Of Inbreeding And Family Origin On Size Of Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha) Fry, Cara J. Rodgveller
Fisheries
We cultured separate lines of chinook salmon fry of Chickamin River, Southeast Alaska, ancestry in seven common garden enclosures. A parentage analysis based on variation of microsatellite alleles showed that within these lines seven brother sister matings created 35 inbred fish from 7 families (F = 0.25) and 37 outbred fish resulted from 10 matings between segregated lines. Outbred and inbred fish did not differ in length (P = 0.42), weight (P = 0.86), or condition factor (P = 0.16). There was significant variation among families for length (P = 0.01) and weight (P <0.01), but not for condition factor (P = 0.48). Because variation among families can be large, it can potentially confound the effects for which a study was designed. To avoid drawing improper conclusions, studies should estimate the amount of variation that can be attributed to family origin, or be certain that many families are sampled.
Investigations Of The Role Of Lipids In Marine Mammal Diets, Health And Ecology, Tamara Lynn Mau
Investigations Of The Role Of Lipids In Marine Mammal Diets, Health And Ecology, Tamara Lynn Mau
Marine Biology
Lipids are essential to many aspects of marine mammal biology. I investigated the amount, type and flux of lipids under a variety of natural and controlled nutritional and dietary conditions, in order to increase our knowledge of marine mammal diets, health and ecology. First, I examined the influence of biological and environmental variables on the quantity and quality of blubber, and their importance in establishing condition indices in the bowhead whale. Blubber was heterogeneous in composition, varying by both site and depth. Sex, age-class, season and body length were all significant factors in determining lipid content (quality) of blubber. Blubber …
Primary Production And Nutrient Dynamics Of The Southeastern Bering Sea Shelf, Taekeun Rho
Primary Production And Nutrient Dynamics Of The Southeastern Bering Sea Shelf, Taekeun Rho
Marine Biology
Understanding the relationships between the distributions of organisms and oceanographic conditions was one of the major goals of the Southeastern Bering Sea Carrying Capacity (SEBSCC) study. As a part of SEBSCC, this study focused on the response of nutrients and primary production to the variations of physical conditions, the general distribution of primary production, and the dynamics of phytoplankton growth, and nutrient utilization over the middle shelf and shelf break regions. The concentration of nutrients and primary productivity were measured over the shelf during 1997-1999. Shipboard nutrient and iron addition experiments were conducted over the middle shelf and shelf break …
Carbon Isotopic Composition Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And Their Weathering In Kachemak Bay Sediment, Tara Ann Borland
Carbon Isotopic Composition Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And Their Weathering In Kachemak Bay Sediment, Tara Ann Borland
Marine Biology
Identification of sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in sediments is an important step in reducing anthropogenic contamination. Identifications based solely on the composition of PAH can be confounded by compositional changes during weathering and biodegradation. Stable isotopic composition of individual PAH offer a source marker that may be less susceptible to alteration. The [alpha]¹³C values of PAH in major potential sources to the Kachemak Bay area were analyzed. To determine the stability of the [alpha]¹³C values of PAH in crude and diesel oil, microbial degradation experiments using sediment from the Kachemak Bay, Alaska, area were conducted over a one-year …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Contraception may provide a useful nonlethal management tool when it is desirable to reduce populations of birds. We tested the efficacy of 20,25 diazacholesterol, and immunization with avian gonadotropin-releasing hormone (AGnRH-I) and chicken riboflavin carrier protein (cRCP) as contraceptives and investigated their modes of action in Coturnix quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). Females that were paired with males treated with 20,25 diazacholesterol produced lower percentages of eggs that were fertile and hatched. Females treated with 20,25 diazacholesterol and paired with control males laid fewer eggs, and lower percentages of their eggs were fertile and hatched. Treatment with 20,25 diazacholesterol …
Wireless Communication Protocol Architectures For Nanosensor Networks, Zhongping Zhang
Wireless Communication Protocol Architectures For Nanosensor Networks, Zhongping Zhang
Engineering
Recent developments in micro fabrication and nanotechnology will enable the inexpensive manufacturing of massive numbers of tiny computing elements with sensors. New programming paradigms are required to obtain organized and coherent behavior from the cooperation of large numbers of sensor nodes. The individual nodes are identical, randomly placed and unreliable. They communicate with a small local neighborhood via wireless broadcast. In such environments, where individual nodes have limited resources, aggregating the node into groups is useful for specialization, increased robustness, and efficient resource allocation. In this paper, an application-specific self-organization protocol stack is developed. The clustering process is divided into …

Isolation And Characterization Of Photobacterium Phosphoreum From Migrating Alaskan Salmon, Kevin Jon Budsberg
Isolation And Characterization Of Photobacterium Phosphoreum From Migrating Alaskan Salmon, Kevin Jon Budsberg
Biological Sciences
We isolated luminous bacteria from drying chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta, reported by Alaska native fishermen to be 'glowing in the dark.' The salmon were harvested for subsistence use from the Yukon River, Alaska. We identified our luminous bacterial isolates as Photobacterium phosphoreum based on nutritional versatility, and 16S rDNA and luxA gene sequences. P. phosphoreum has previously only been isolated from the marine environment. We tested whether our strains, isolated from fish harvested in freshwater, represent cold-adapted, freshwater-tolerant strains of P. phosphoreum. We also analyzed lux operon composition and organization, and examined the 5' promoter region of the lux operon …
Nest And Duckling Survival Of Scaup At Minto Flats, Alaska, Johann Walker
Nest And Duckling Survival Of Scaup At Minto Flats, Alaska, Johann Walker
Biological Sciences
To address the hypothesis that declines in recruitment were related to recent declines in abundance of lesser and greater scaup, I estimated variation in nest and duckling survival of these species at Minto Flats, Alaska (64°50'N, 148°50'W) during 2002-2003. I included nest survival data from two previous studies conducted during 1989-1993 in my analysis. Daily Survival Rate (DSR) of nests was variable within and among years and among habitats. Estimated nest survival of scaup ranged from 0.02 (95% CI: 0.00 to 0.06) in 1992 to 0.61 (95% CI: 0.50 to 0.74) in 1993. Predation was the primary apparent cause of …
