Flow weighted composite samples were analyzed for fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli and …

Thermal Adaptation Of Maternal And Embryonic Phenotypes In A Wide Spread Lizard (Sceloporus Undulatus), Christopher E. Oufiero Aug 2004

Thermal Adaptation Of Maternal And Embryonic Phenotypes In A Wide Spread Lizard (Sceloporus Undulatus), Christopher E. Oufiero

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Geographically widespread ectotherms encounter thermal gradients that generate variation in behavior, physiology and life-history. Because rates of physiological processes are very sensitive to temperature, cold environments are thought to favor genotypes that have relatively high capacities for growth despite environmental constraints. Two different adaptive responses can occur: (1) mothers in colder environments can allocate more energy to each offspring, or (2) offspring in colder environments make more efficient use of available resources. In this study, I examined both maternal adaptations and embryonic adaptations to environmental temperature. Evidence of maternal adaptations was assessed by examining the relationship between egg size and …

The Importance Of Teaching: Ensuring Better Schooling By Building Teacher Capacities That Maximize The Quality Of Teaching And Learning Provision – Implications Of Findings From The International And Australian Evidence-Based Research, Ken Rowe Aug 2004

The Importance Of Teaching: Ensuring Better Schooling By Building Teacher Capacities That Maximize The Quality Of Teaching And Learning Provision – Implications Of Findings From The International And Australian Evidence-Based Research, Ken Rowe

Student learning processes

Given the level of consensus regarding the importance of school education as an essential element of micro- and macro economic reform, policy issues surrounding school and teacher effectiveness are of particular importance. However, much of the traditional and prevailing dogmas surrounding ‘factors’ affecting students’ experiences and outcomes of schooling throughout their primary and secondary years, especially socio-cultural and socio-economic factors, are now understood to be products of methodological and statistical artifact, and amount to little more than ‘religious’ adherence to the moribund ideologies of biological and social determinism. Above all, a good deal of this ‘discourse’ is not supported by …

Nucleation And Growth Studies Of Crystalline Carbon Phases At Nanoscale., Radhika C. Mani 1978- Aug 2004

Nucleation And Growth Studies Of Crystalline Carbon Phases At Nanoscale., Radhika C. Mani 1978-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the nucleation and early stage growth of crystals from the vapor phase is important for realizing large-area single-crystal quality films, controlled synthesis of nanocrystals, and the possible discovery of new phases of materials. Carbon provides the most interesting system because all its known crystalline phases (diamond, graphite and carbon nanotubes) are technologically important materials. Hence, this dissertation is focused on studying the nucleation and growth of carbon phases synthesized from the vapor phase. Nucleation experiments were performed in a microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) reactor, and the resulting carbon nanocrystals were analyzed primarily using electron nanodiffraction and Raman …

Earth Sciences

The Large-scale Biosphere–Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA) is a multinational, interdisciplinary research program led by Brazil. Ecological studies in LBA focus on how tropical forest conversion, regrowth, and selective logging influence carbon storage, nutrient dynamics, trace gas fluxes, and the prospect for sustainable land use in the Amazon region. Early results from ecological studies within LBA emphasize the variability within the vast Amazon region and the profound effects that land-use and land-cover changes are having on that landscape. The predominant land cover of the Amazon region is evergreen forest; nonetheless, LBA studies have observed strong seasonal patterns in gross primary …

Lichens, Sun, And Fire: A Search For An Embiid-Environment Connection In Australia (Order Embiidina: Australembiidae And Notoligotomidae), Janice Edgerly-Rooks, Edward Rooks

Biology

This investigation is the first to quantify the degree of habitat specialization for any species within the little-known order Embiidina. The lichen and plant communities found in the habitats of two sympatric species, one living on lichens encrusted on granite and another feeding in leaf litter, were characterized using a process of ordination and cluster analysis. Differences among 40 samples and their relationships to environmental factors were probed statistically using Spearman’s coefficient of rank correlations generated by comparing rank similarity matrices of the census sites. The lichen eater, Notoligotoma hardyi (Friederichs), was more abundant in areas with strong southern exposures …

Ant (Formicidae) Diversity, Species Richness, And Abundance In Response To Different Food Sources, August 2004, Sarah A. Wyatt Aug 2004

Ant (Formicidae) Diversity, Species Richness, And Abundance In Response To Different Food Sources, August 2004, Sarah A. Wyatt

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

More than 500 species of ants (family Formicidae: order Hymenoptera) have been found in Costa Rica (Gauld & Hanson 2000), and 46 of the 80 genera found in Costa Rica are known to live in the Monteverde area (Longino 2000). Some species of ants are known to exhibit food preferences for or against sugar and/or specific prey taxa (Dejean et al. 1999). The purpose of this study was to determine if species richness and diversity change in response to varying bait in traps. One hundred and twenty traps containing one of 6 kinds of bait (crustaceans, tuna, honey, peanut butter, …

Bromeliad Arthropod Diversity In A Regenerating Pasture Adjacent To A Tropical Montane Forest, Costa Rica, August 2004, Ann Willow Jorgenson Aug 2004

Bromeliad Arthropod Diversity In A Regenerating Pasture Adjacent To A Tropical Montane Forest, Costa Rica, August 2004, Ann Willow Jorgenson

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Tank bromeliads (Bromeliaceae, Vriesea sp.) harbor diverse faunal communities. A total of 426 arthropods assigned to 62 different morphospecies were collected and identified to taxonomic order. The composition of bromeliad arthropod fauna was investigated in an open pasture to see whether arthropod diversity or richness correlated with distance from the forest edge. Neither arthropod richness nor diversity was found to significantly correlate with distance from the forest edge. These results are discussed in relation to island biogeography theory and the ecological implications of arthropod diversity are considered.

Effect Of Ficus Tuerckheimii Diameter, Host Tree Presence, Habitat And Orientation On Epiphyte Diversity And Abundance, August 2004, Christina Tierno

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Ficus tuerckheimii, a species of strangler fig found in the cloud forests of Monteverde, is a keystone species for a multitude of animals as well as epiphytic plants. In the study, epiphyte richness on Ficus tuerckheimii was analyzed in order to determine if epiphyte species richness was related to elevation, circumference, hollowness, location, percent of area covered by epiphytes and compass point orientation. Thirty Ficus tuerckheimii were studied in pasture and forest areas between 1400-1500 m elevations. A significant relationship was found between epiphyte species richness in forest habitats versus open (Mann Whitney U=28, P=.0083). Significance was also found between …

Observational Analysis Of Insect Diversity, Richness, And Abundance On The Fungus, Auricularia Delicata (Basiodiomycata), August 2004, Megan Scott

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Fungi are important to ecosystems because of their ability to release nutrients back into the environment and their relationships with insects. This study determined the diversity and richness of insects attracted to Auricularia delicata and related it to external conditions. Eleven colonies of Auricularia delicata were located near the Estación Biológica de Monteverde and observed to determine the morphospecies and abundance of insects present. The results illustrated that insect abundance significantly increased with species diversity (RS = 0.778, P = 0.0001.) Insect abundance significantly increased with colony surface area (RS = 0.659, P = 0.0371) and number of fruiting bodies …

Role Of Glycine Receptor In Protecting Cells During Blood Depletion (Ischemia), Hui Zhang Aug 2004

Role Of Glycine Receptor In Protecting Cells During Blood Depletion (Ischemia), Hui Zhang

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The research project aims to determine the role of glycine receptor (GlyR) in the protection of plasma membrane of ischemic cells. Plasma membrane disruption is a progressive process during ischemia. Once plasma membrane becomes permeable to macromolecules, the cell injuries are irreversible. Ischemia can be modeled in the lab by using ATP-depletion medium. Previous results have shown that glycine (Gly) in extracellular medium prevents membrane permeabilization during ischemia. These studies suggest that the protection by glycine might be mediated by its binding to GlyR. But this hypothesis has never been confirmed. This study shows that glycine cannot protect HEK.293 cells …

Determinants Of Marshbird Occurrence In Reclaimed Coal Mines, William E. Vetter Aug 2004

Determinants Of Marshbird Occurrence In Reclaimed Coal Mines, William E. Vetter

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Several marshbird species in the Midwest have suffered population declines linked to the loss and degradation of wetland habitat. As a result, many marshbirds have been listed as species of management concern at the state and federal levels. However, reclaimed surface mines in the Midwest may benefit these marshbirds since most reclaimed mines contain a much greater density and diversity of wetlands than the surrounding agricultural landscape. In 2002 and 2003, point counts were used to survey wetlands on reclaimed mines and at non-mine sites in west-central Indiana for the uccurrence of American bittern, least bittern, green heron, American coot, …

Eliminating Absorbing Interference Using The H-Point Standard Addition Method: Case Of Griess Assay In The Presence Of Interferent Heme Enzymes Such As Nos, Perera N. Indika, Mekki Bayachou

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Standard calibration methods used to determine trace analytes usually yield significant deviations from the actual analyte value in the presence of interferents in the assay media. These deviations become of particular concern when the concentration of the analyte is low, and when the results are used to draw mechanistic or kinetic conclusions, for instance in enzyme structure-function studies. In these circumstances, the H-point standard addition method (HPSAM) provides superior precision and accuracy. This method is developed here for the case of the spectrophotometric Griess assay used to determine nitrite in various enzymology investigations, such as nitrite determination in studies of …

The Effects Of Elevation On Epiphyte Richness And Density On Cloud Forest Tree Ferns (Cyatheaceae And Dicksoniaceae), August 2004, Chad Taylor Aug 2004

The Effects Of Elevation On Epiphyte Richness And Density On Cloud Forest Tree Ferns (Cyatheaceae And Dicksoniaceae), August 2004, Chad Taylor

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Epiphytes play an integral role in nutrient cycling in tropical rainforests and are often found on the trunks of tree ferns. This study examined the role of elevation on epiphyte load on tree ferns. Ninety-six tree ferns were examined along an elevational gradient, and data were collected regarding the identity and dimensions of the trees as well as their elevations and the number and type of epiphytes on their trunks. Epiphyte abundance was not significantly correlated with elevation, but epiphyte load was significantly related to tree fern morphology. The Alsophila, whose spines likely provide a prime habitat for epiphytes, possessed …

Contracts And Electronic Agents, Sabrina Kis Aug 2004

Contracts And Electronic Agents, Sabrina Kis

LLM Theses and Essays

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the formation of contracts concluded by electronic agents both in the European Union and the United States. Technology is in constant evolution and the possibilities offered by electronic agents today are far from the ones that could be developed tomorrow. Thus, law faces a permanent challenge to adapt itself to these changes. This paper aims to show that the existing principles do not provide an appropriate legal frame for this new type of contract. In addition, since legislatures have attempted to regulate this new way of doing business, this thesis analyzes the …

Historical Aspects Of State Arbitration Policy, Elton R. Lanier Aug 2004

Historical Aspects Of State Arbitration Policy, Elton R. Lanier

LLM Theses and Essays

This study examines state arbitration policy in Georgia from its establishment as a colony until the present time. It describes early informal and nonjudicialized procedures such as the Muhlenberg arbitration in Ebenezer in 1774; initiatives of the Georgia Legislature for the arbitral resolution of disputes; the application of arbitral devices in Georgia’s tax and municipal corporation law; arbitration in Georgia’s chambers of commerce and boards of trade, and forms of public law arbitration still existing in Georgia. The survey then shifts its attention to formal and judicialized arbitration in Georgia, focusing on the rise of uncodified common law arbitration in …
