Understanding Relative Feed Value (Rfv) And Relative Forage Quality (Rfq), Peter Jeranyama, Alvaro D. Garcia Aug 2004

Understanding Relative Feed Value (Rfv) And Relative Forage Quality (Rfq), Peter Jeranyama, Alvaro D. Garcia

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Feed quality of alfalfa harvested as haylage or hay depends, to a great extent, on the maturity of the stand. With increasing maturity, plant structural carbohydrates, as measured by the ADF and NDF fractions, increase. These fiber fractions represent the more indigestible parts of the plant. As a result, digestibility and energy obtained through fermentation decrease with maturity. Relative feed value (RFV) has been used for years to compare the quality of legume and legume/grass hays and silages. Having one index to price hay and predict animal performance has been very useful for livestock producers and hay farmers.

Circatidal And Circadian Rhythms Of Locomotion In Limulus Polyphemus, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Christopher C. Chabot, Jeffrey Kent

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

The nocturnal increases in the sensitivity of the lateral eye of Limulus polyphemus, the species of horseshoe crab found along the Atlantic coast, have been firmly established as being controlled by an endogenous circadian clock (1,2,3) located in the brain (4). Virtually nothing is known, however, about the control of the animal’s behavioral rhythms of mating and spawning that are observed in the intertidal zone during high tides in late spring (5,6,7). Many other marine species, especially intertidal crabs, exhibit similar rhythmic behaviors that have been demonstrated to be under the control of endogenous clocks that are circatidal (8,9,10,11,12), circadian …

Basin Of Attraction Of Periodic Orbits Of Maps On The Real Line, Saber Elaydi, Robert J. Sacker

Mathematics Faculty Research

We prove a conjecture by Elaydi and Yakubu which states that the basin of attraction of an attracting 2 k -cycle of the Ricker's map is where E is the set of all eventually 2 r -periodic points. The result is then extended to a more general class of continuous maps on the real line.

The Impact Of Health Information And Demographic Changes On Aggregate Meat Demand, Christiane Schroeter, Ken Foster Aug 2004

The Impact Of Health Information And Demographic Changes On Aggregate Meat Demand, Christiane Schroeter, Ken Foster

Agribusiness

Over the past few decades, U.S. meat consumption patterns have changed. Figure 1 shows the U.S. per-capita meat consumption from 1970-1999. Consumers have increased their total meat consumption by 9.3% from 1970 to 1999, however, the composition of the meat consumption changed as well. While beef consumption has consistently decreased since 1985 - that of poultry and fish have increased. Per capita pork consumption has not changed on average from the 1970’s to the 1990’s.

Like Your Classes, Know Your Professors? Predictors Of Talented College Students’ Science And Technology Careers, James Lee, Christina Stow Aug 2004

Like Your Classes, Know Your Professors? Predictors Of Talented College Students’ Science And Technology Careers, James Lee, Christina Stow

Faculty Publications

In the US, there is great loss of academically talented college-level science and technology students as many decide not to follow through with their initial career choices. Following research that has implicated personal relationships in career decision-making, we study the effects of college course experiences, relationships with professors, and individual characteristics on career plans of 58 talented university students by analyzing interview data gathered in 1999. Among other things, we find that students who dropped out have few positive science course experiences and no relationships with faculty. Life sciences students report that they do not like science courses, but they …

Effects Of Management And Population Size On Genetic Diversity Of Eggert's Sunflower (Helianthus Eggertii; Asteraceae), John Howard Starnes Aug 2004

Effects Of Management And Population Size On Genetic Diversity Of Eggert's Sunflower (Helianthus Eggertii; Asteraceae), John Howard Starnes

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Helianthus eggertii (Asteraceae) is a federally threatened sunflower species that typically grows between open woods and barrens. This species has both sexual and asexual modes of reproduction, which can influence the amount of genetic diversity present within and among populations. Maintaining genetic diversity is one of the primary objectives in managing threatened species or populations. Fire and population size may influence genetic diversity. Two Inter-Simple Sequence Repeat Markers (873 and MAO) were used to characterize many important genetic parameters of 17 populations in 2003 and four populations in 2004. This information was used to assess the effectiveness of different conservation …

Physiology And Biochemistry Of Lead Accumulation In Sesbania Drummondii, Adam Ruley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis presents the results of three different studies conducted to elucidate the physiology and biochemistry of lead tolerance of Sesbania drummondii. These studies were conducted to determine: 1) the presence of an antioxidant mechanism in S. drummondii to counteract oxidative stress resulting from Pb exposure, 2) the extent of Pb tolerance of S. drummondii seedlings grown in the presence of Pb and synthetic chelators in soil and 3) the expression of antioxidant enzymes in S. drummondii seedlings exposed to Pb and synthetic chelators in aqueous media. In the first study, Sesbania drummondii plants were grown in soil containing 0-10 …

Cloning And Sequencing Of Bovine Na+/K= Atpase Α-1 Sub-Unit, Srikanth Aakula Aug 2004

Cloning And Sequencing Of Bovine Na+/K= Atpase Α-1 Sub-Unit, Srikanth Aakula

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The major focus of this project was cloning and sequencing the α-1 sub-unit of Na+/K+-ATase gene in bovine corneal endothelium. The Na+/K+-ATase, also called the Na+ pump, is a crucial transmembrane protein. By transporting water and ions from and through the cornea into the aqueous humor, it is responsible for maintenance of structural integrity, corneal hydration and thereby transparency of the cornea. The Na+ pump is characterized by a complex molecular heterogeneity that results from differential association of multiple isoforms of both a (the catalytic) and [3 (glycoprotein) sub-units. In the corneal endothelium, α-1 α-2, β-l and β-2 sub-units are …

Examination Of Technologies For Student-Generated Work In A Peer-Led, Peer-Review Instructional Environment, Brian P. Coppola, Alan L. Kiste Aug 2004

Examination Of Technologies For Student-Generated Work In A Peer-Led, Peer-Review Instructional Environment, Brian P. Coppola, Alan L. Kiste

Chemistry and Biochemistry

There is a growing literature demonstrating the effectiveness of using computer environments to assist students’ in visualizing science and mathematics concepts. However, with many of these computerized learning environments, students do not have the option of manipulating the environment. Instead, they are presented with pre-made visualizations. Enabling students to display their understanding through multiple representational forms is more interesting. In our peer-led, peer-review environment, students generate a complex, literature-based, multimedia text on which their final examination is based. However, there are great time and personnel costs in this design. Collaborating with SRI Inc., we are addressing these demands via the …

Habitat Associations, Relative Abundance, And Species Richness Of Autumn Landbird Migrants In Southwestern Idaho, Jay D. Carlisle, Greg Kaltenecker, Sarah L. Stock, David L. Swanson

Intermountain Bird Observatory Publications and Presentations

We used count surveys and mist-net captures to compare habitat associations, relative abundance, species richness, and community similarity of migrant landbirds among four major habitats in the Boise Foothills of southwestern Idaho. Count surveys were conducted from August through October 1997–2000 in conifer forest, mountain shrubland, shrubsteppe, and riparian shrubland. We compared bird detections among habitats for all birds pooled, individual species, and three migration strategies: Neotropical, temperate, and resident (including irruptive migrants). Mountain shrubland supported the highest numbers of temperate migrants; both mountain shrubland and riparian shrubland had the highest numbers of Neotropical migrants; and conifer forest had the …

Determining Rates Of Change And Evaluating Group-Level Resiliency Differences In Hyporheic Microbial Communities In Response To Fluvial Heavy-Metal Deposition, Kevin P. Feris, Philip W. Ramsey, Matthias Rillig, Johnnie N. Moore, James E. Gannon, William E. Holben Aug 2004

Determining Rates Of Change And Evaluating Group-Level Resiliency Differences In Hyporheic Microbial Communities In Response To Fluvial Heavy-Metal Deposition, Kevin P. Feris, Philip W. Ramsey, Matthias Rillig, Johnnie N. Moore, James E. Gannon, William E. Holben

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Prior field studies by our group have demonstrated a relationship between fluvial deposition of heavy metals and hyporheic-zone microbial community structure. Here, we determined the rates of change in hyporheic microbial communities in response to heavy-metal contamination and assessed group-level differences in resiliency in response to heavy metals. A controlled laboratory study was performed using 20 flowthrough river mesocosms and a repeated-measurement factorial design. A single hyporheic microbial community was exposed to five different levels of an environmentally relevant metal treatment (0, 4, 8, 16, and 30% sterilized contaminated sediments). Community-level responses were monitored at 1, 2, 4, 8, and …
