The Effects Of Shear Deformation On Chondrogenesis, Kori Vasser Brabham Aug 2004

The Effects Of Shear Deformation On Chondrogenesis, Kori Vasser Brabham

Theses and Dissertations

Due to mechanical loading, cartilage experiences distortional change, volumetric change, and fluid flow. Research has shown cells to be responsive to unconfined compression, a load that produces all three conditions. To isolate the factor(s) responsible for chondrogenesis, the first goal of this research was to design and implement a device for the application of shear deformation to cells. Secondly, using this device, Stage 23/24 chick limb bud cells were suspended in 2% alginate and subjected to 20% shear deformation at 1 Hz. for two hours daily for three days. Gene expression, DNA content, sGAG content, and cartilage nodule formation were …

Ad Hoc Integration And Querying Of Heterogeneous Online Distributed Databases, Liangyou Chen Aug 2004

Ad Hoc Integration And Querying Of Heterogeneous Online Distributed Databases, Liangyou Chen

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation provides an ad hoc integration methodology to manage and integrate heterogeneous online distributed databases on demand. The problem arises from an impending demand from scientific users to conveniently manage existing Web data along with the complexity involved in the construction of a functional data federation system using existing data integration technologies. We close this gap with a databases management framework accompanying novel Web data specification languages, wrapper generation technologies, and distributed query processing techniques. A major achievement of this dissertation is the establishment of a sound relational data model for Web data. Under this model, the Web becomes …

The data used was LANDSAT TM 30 meter imagery, digital elevation models, also at 30 meter resolution, Penn State STASGO soils data, and the …

Inventory And Geometric Analysis Of Flank Margin Caves Of The Bahamas, Monica J. Roth Aug 2004

Inventory And Geometric Analysis Of Flank Margin Caves Of The Bahamas, Monica J. Roth

Theses and Dissertations

Flank margin caves are karst features that develop in the freshwater/saline mixing zone within the carbonate islands of the Bahamas. The flank margin caves that are currently exposed developed during the last interglacial sea level highstand (+6 m; ~125 ka). Initially small ovid chambers, the caves increase in size to about 100 m2, then interconnect with adjacent chambers to form medium-sized caves. At about 1000 m2, these medium-size caves interlink forming large caves that are laterally extensive, vertically restricted, do not penetrate the fresh-water lens a significant amount, and run parallel to the axis of the ridge in which they …

Optical Fiber Humidity Sensor Based On Evanescent Wave Scattering, Lina Xu Aug 2004

Optical Fiber Humidity Sensor Based On Evanescent Wave Scattering, Lina Xu

Theses and Dissertations

An optical fiber humidity sensor has been devised using a porous sol-gel silica (PSGS) coating as a transducer. Evanescent wave scattering (EWS) in the PSGS coating. PSGS particles are highly hydrophilic and have a strong tendency to absorb water molecules from the surrounding environment. The absorbed water molecules form a thin layer on the inner surface of the pores inside the porous silica and enhance EWS, from which an indicatory signal can be obtained. The humidity sensor presented in this thesis has a fast response, is reversible, low cost, and has a broad dynamic relative humidity range from 3.6?0-6% to …

The Alley Behind First Street, Northeast: Criminal Abortion In The Nation's Capital 1873-1973, Douglas R. Miller Aug 2004

The Alley Behind First Street, Northeast: Criminal Abortion In The Nation's Capital 1873-1973, Douglas R. Miller

ExpressO

The thirtieth anniversary of Roe v. Wade found our country no less divided over abortion than it was during the era of its prohibition. As the bitter struggle over judicial nominations throughout the present administration suggests, abortion’s future remains at the forefront of American political debate.

In their push for increased limitations, abortion opponents generally overlook the historical consequences of prohibition. Abortion rights proponents often invoke history in their opposition to new restrictions, but tend to do so superficially, and only in a manner that supports their position.

This article attempts a more complex study of criminal abortion’s legal and …

Dna Strand Breaks Induced By 0–4 Ev Electrons: The Role Of Shape Resonances, Frédéric Martin, Paul Burrow, Zhongli Cai, Pierre Cloutier, Darel Hunting, Léon Sanche Aug 2004

Dna Strand Breaks Induced By 0–4 Ev Electrons: The Role Of Shape Resonances, Frédéric Martin, Paul Burrow, Zhongli Cai, Pierre Cloutier, Darel Hunting, Léon Sanche

Paul Burrow Publications

Collisions of 0– 4 eV electrons with thin DNA films are shown to produce single strand breaks. The yield is sharply structured as a function of electron energy and indicates the involvement of π* shape resonances in the bond breaking process. The cross sections are comparable in magnitude to those observed in other compounds in the gas phase in which π* electrons are transferred through the molecule to break a remote bond. The results therefore support aspects of a theoretical study by Barrios et al. [J. Phys. B 106, 7991 (2002)] indicating that such a mechanism could produce strand breaks …

Quantitative Analysis Of Indigo And Indigo Precursors In Leaves Of Isatis Spp. And Polygonum Tinctorium, Kg Gilbert, Hg Maule, B Rudolph, M Lewis, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

Analysis of extracts from two woad species (Isatis tinctoria and Isatis indigotica) and Polygonum tinctorium revealed that only one indigo precursor (indican) was present in Polygonum, but two precursors were found in Isatis spp. This was done using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), coupled to an evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD). In Isatis spp., the indigo precursors indican and a fraction representing isatan B were identified. The proportion of indican and isatan B was different between the two Isatis spp. tested. For the first time, it was possible to quantify the precursors in woad plant species, and the results were …

Parental Determinants Of Emotion Regulation In A Maltreated Sample, Lara Rachel Robinson, Aug 2004

Parental Determinants Of Emotion Regulation In A Maltreated Sample, Lara Rachel Robinson,

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The current investigation examines the relationship between parenting, emotion regulation, and symptoms of psychopathology in maltreating and non-maltreating parent-child dyads. The participants in this study were 114 children (67 maltreated and 57 non-maltreated) from ages 1 to 4. Child affect and effortful control along with parent affect were observed during a parentchild interaction procedure. Symptoms of psychopathology were measured using the Child Behavior Checklist. The maltreated children in this study exhibited more irritability/anger, affect lability, and internalizing symptomatology, along with less positive affect than their non-maltreated peers. These data also suggest that parental affect is related to internalizing symptomatology; but …

Seabed Auv Offers New Platform For High-Resolution Imaging, Hanumant Singh, Ali Can, Ryan Eustice, Steve Lerner, Neil Mcphee, Chris Roman

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

A number of marine biological, geological, and archaeological applications share the need for high-resolution optical and acoustic imaging of the sea floor [Ballard et al., 2002; Greene et al., 2000; Shank et al., 2002]. In particular, there is a compelling need to conduct studies in depths beyond those considered reasonable for divers (∼50 m) down to depths at the shelf edge and continental slope (∼1000–2000 m). Some of the constraints associated with such work include the requirement to work off of small coastal vessels or fishing boats of opportunity, and the requirement for the vehicle components to be air-shippable to enable inexpensive …

Promoting Diversity: Recruitment, Selection, Orientation, And Retention Of International Students, Murat Tas

Theses & Dissertations

The number of international students attending U.S. higher teaming institutions has decreased over the past decade from 40 percent to 30 percent. These students are an important resource for the U.S. and their native countries in terms of education, culture, and economy. Differences between international and domestic students currently enrolled in a private university were assessed using a new American College of Testing Survey of Student Opinion combined with a sociocultural adaptation scale. Those analyzed results were incorporated into a customized 18 question survey and interview process to assess international and domestic students who had not graduated. These analyzed assessments …
