Neural Network Based Orbit Propagation For Small Satellite Missions, Liu Fang, N. Nagarajan
Neural Network Based Orbit Propagation For Small Satellite Missions, Liu Fang, N. Nagarajan
Small Satellite Conference
The Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers are being widely utilized for low earth navigation in space. These receivers provide the orbital information in real time while the attitude sensors provide real time attitude data. For full autonomy of a satellite, any failures which may occur due to different sources, such as GPS receiver, attitude sensors are to be detected autonomously and suitable remedial actions need to be taken to continue the satellite operations. Towards achieving autonomy, GPS receivers are widely used onboard the satellite for orbit information. In case of a failure or outages of the GPS receiver data, an …

On Brown V. Board Of Education's 50th Anniversary: To Integrate Or Separate Is Not The Question, Thomas Kleven
ExpressO
By ending official apartheid, Brown represented a great victory in the struggle for racial justice in the United States. Following more than a decade of inaction as a result of its “all deliberate speed” formulation, and in response to the then prevailing sentiment among the proponents of Brown, the Supreme Court began to push for the integration of school districts that engaged in segregation by law or practice. This integrationist push lasted from the late 1960s to the late 1970s. Beginning in the mid-1970s the Court began to limit the remedies for segregation by law or practice, and beginning in …

Platform For Attitude Control Experiment (Pace): An Experimental Three-Axis Stabilized Cubesat, Jung-Kuo Tu, Shi-Hua Wu, Chen-Chi Chu
Small Satellite Conference
Owing to their low cost, fast development time, and multi-discipline educational purpose, CubeSats have been widely advocated by universities in recent years. However, few have employed three-axis stabilization schemes due mainly to the limitation of power and mass. The PACE, Platform for Attitude Control Experiment for short, is a three-axis stabilizing CubeSat developed at the National Cheng Kung University. It is a 20x10x10 cm3 double cube satellite weight less than 2-kg. A miniature momentum wheel is employed to achieve stability alone the pitch (orbit normal) axis. Magnetic coils are used to generate control torques to stabilize roll and yaw axes. …

Evaluating The Present And Potential Future Impact Of Small Satellites, Andrew Lewin
Evaluating The Present And Potential Future Impact Of Small Satellites, Andrew Lewin
Small Satellite Conference
The theme of the 18th Annual AIAA/USU Conference on Small Satellites questions whether small satellites are a complimentary or a disruptive technology. This paper addresses this question by performing an analysis of the role small satellites play in the space market. The market is segmented into three primary components, military space, civil space, and commercial space. Analysis focuses on the U.S. space market. The analysis shows that while small satellites perform some valuable missions, they represent only a small part of the overall space market. Furthermore, although there are some upcoming opportunities for small satellites, they do not appear to …

Ex Post Economic Analysis Of Reproduction-Monitoring And Predator-Removal Variables Associated With Protection Of The Endangered California Least Tern, Stephanie A. Shwiff, Ray T. Sterner, John W. Turman, Brian D. Foster
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Important nest sites for the endangered California least tern remain at the U.S. Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, CA; these terns comprise approximately 17% of the state’s breeding population. This paper presents an empirical analysis of annual, fixed-cost budgets expended for reproduction-monitoring and predator-removal activities to protect this shorebird. The ex post study covered the inclusive 7-year period between 1995 and 2001. Separate regression analyses were computed using 15 biological (XB), economic (XE), and meteorological (XM) variables. In separate analyses, 14 of these variables served as independent variables to predict each of four dependent tern observation variables (i.e., Ynests, Yeggs, …

Crystal Structure Of A High-Affinity Variant Of Rat Α-Parvalbumin, Yong Hwan Lee, John J. Tanner, John D. Larson, Michael T. Henzl
Faculty Publications
In model peptide systems, Ca2+ affinity is maximized in EF-hand motifs containing four carboxylates positioned on the +x and -x and +z and -z axes; introduction of a fifth carboxylate ligand reduces the affinity. However, in rat β-parvalbumin, replacement of Ser-55 with aspartate heightens divalent ion affinity [Henzl, M. T., et al. (1996) Biochemistry 35, 5856-5869]. The corresponding α-parvalbumin variant (S55D/E59D) likewise exhibits elevated affinity [Henzl, M. T., et al. (2003) Anal. Biochem. 319, 216-233]. To determine whether these mutations produce a variation on the archetypal EF-hand coordination scheme, we have obtained high-resolution X-ray crystallographic data for α S55D/E59D. As …
Resolution Of Organelle Docking And Fusion Kinetics In A Cell-Free Assay, Alexey J. Merz, William T. Wickner
Resolution Of Organelle Docking And Fusion Kinetics In A Cell-Free Assay, Alexey J. Merz, William T. Wickner
Dartmouth Scholarship
In vitro assays of compartment mixing have been key tools in the biochemical dissection of organelle docking and fusion. Many such assays measure compartment mixing through the enzymatic modification of reporter proteins. Homotypic fusion of yeast vacuoles is measured with a coupled assay of proteolytic maturation of pro-alkaline phosphatase (pro-ALP). A kinetic lag is observed between the end of docking, marked by the acquisition of resistance to anti-SNARE reagents, and ALP maturation. We therefore asked whether the time taken for pro-ALP maturation adds a kinetic lag to the measured fusion signal. Prb1p promotes ALP maturation; overproduction of Prb1p accelerates ALP …

The Kini Kinesin Kif2a Is Required For Bipolar Spindle Assembly Through A Functional Relationship With Mcak, Neil J. Ganem, Duane A. Compton
Dartmouth Scholarship
Although the microtubule-depolymerizing KinI motor Kif2a is abundantly expressed in neuronal cells, we now show it localizes to centrosomes and spindle poles during mitosis in cultured cells. RNAi-induced knockdown of Kif2a expression inhibited cell cycle progression because cells assembled monopolar spindles. Bipolar spindle assembly was restored in cells lacking Kif2a by treatments that altered microtubule assembly (nocodazole), eliminated kinetochore–microtubule attachment (loss of Nuf2), or stabilized microtubule plus ends at kinetochores (loss of MCAK). Thus, two KinI motors, MCAK and Kif2a, play distinct roles in mitosis, and MCAK activity at kinetochores must be balanced by Kif2a activity at poles for spindle …

Laser-Assisted Nanoscale Deposition Of Diamond-Like Carbon Films On Tungsten Tips, J. Shi, Yongfeng Lu, R. S. Cherukuri, K. K. Mendu, D. W. Doerr, Dennis R. Alexander, L. P. Li, X. Y. Chen
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films were deposited on tungsten tips under KrF excimer laser irradiation in benzene solution. The deposition process was found to be highly dependent on tip sharpness. Tips with larger curvature radii and smaller aspect ratios could not be coated with DLC films under the same condition as that for sharp tips. Raman spectra showed that more sp3 tetrahedral structures were present in the DLC films on a tip with a smaller curvature radius. Simulation results showed that the tip sharpness dependent local optical enhancement played an important role in the DLC deposition process. An optical field …

Noncontact Scanning Impedance Imaging In An Aqueous Solution, Aaron R. Hawkins, Hongze Liu, Travis E. Oliphant, Stephen M. Schultz
Faculty Publications
We present a method for imaging based on noncontact electrical impedance measurements and mechanical scanning. Measurement results are shown for an initial system based on this concept. An impedance probe design is presented, applicable to the test system. Line-scan data plots of high impedance contrast structures show a good fit to a theoretical physical model. Image resolutions on the order of 100 m are indicated for the initial system. Two-dimensional impedance images of biological tissue generated by this technique are shown.
Evaluation Of Chromium Mobility In An Electrokinetic Environment, Christopher Michael Fetters
Evaluation Of Chromium Mobility In An Electrokinetic Environment, Christopher Michael Fetters
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to determine the potential effect indigenous ions may have on the effectiveness of electrokinetic remediation of chromium contaminated soils. A synthetic soil matrix was tested in conjunction with four common ion pairs found in soils and ground water. The results of this study indicate that the interaction of the indigenous ions is sufficient to inhibit the effectiveness of the electrokinetic remediation process. The mobility of chromium through the soil was altered in the presence of high concentrations of the indigenous ions. Further study in this area will be required to address the effect of …

Methanogenic Generation Of Biogas From Synthesis-Gas Fermentation Wastewaters, Katherine Ann Taconi
Methanogenic Generation Of Biogas From Synthesis-Gas Fermentation Wastewaters, Katherine Ann Taconi
Theses and Dissertations
As societies around the world become increasingly more dependent on fossil based fuels, the need to investigate alternative fuel sources becomes more pressing. Renewable, biomass-based carbon sources obtained from the biosphere can be gasified to produce synthesis gas, which can in turn be fermented to produce fuel-grade ethanol. A byproduct of ethanol production via fermentation is acetic acid. An optimized ethanol fermentation process should produce a wastewater stream containing less than 2 g/L of acetic acid. This is not enough acid to justify recovery of the acid; however it is a high enough concentration that treatment of the stream is …
In-Situ Lead Immobilization Using Phosphate Based Binders, Jason Ellis Darnell
In-Situ Lead Immobilization Using Phosphate Based Binders, Jason Ellis Darnell
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum phosphate treatment method to stabilize lead contaminated soil from a firing range. Seven different phosphate sources at five different concentrations were added to soil collected from a firing range on a military base. A series of tests were performed to determine a generic phosphate treatment method. The selected generic phosphate treatment was compared to an untreated control soil sample and to four commercially available treatments provided by invited vendors selected from industry. The four vendors processes, control, and generic treatments were subjected to a series of physical and chemical tests …
Role Of Actin Cytoskeleton Filaments In Mechanotransduction Of Cyclic Hydrostatic Pressure, Keertik S. Fulzele
Role Of Actin Cytoskeleton Filaments In Mechanotransduction Of Cyclic Hydrostatic Pressure, Keertik S. Fulzele
Theses and Dissertations
This research examines the role of actin cytoskeleton filaments in chondroinduction by cyclic hydrostatic pressurization. A chondroinductive hydrostatic pressurization system was developed and characterized. A pressure of 5 MPa at 1 Hz frequency, applied for 7200 cycles (4 hours intermittent) per day, induced chondrogenic differentiation in C3H10T1/2 cells while 1800 cycles (1 hour intermittent) did not induce chondrogenesis. Quantitative analysis of chondrogenesis was determined as sulfated glycosaminoglycan synthesis and rate of collagen synthesis while qualitative analysis was obtained as Alcian Blue staining and collagen type II immunostaining. Actin disruption using 2 uM Cytochalasin D inhibited the enhanced sGAG synthesis in …
Examination Of The Effects Of Biosurfactant Concentration On Natural Gas Hydrate Formation In Seafloor Porous Media, Charles E. Woods
Examination Of The Effects Of Biosurfactant Concentration On Natural Gas Hydrate Formation In Seafloor Porous Media, Charles E. Woods
Theses and Dissertations
Various porous media were tested with biosurfactant solutions (rhamnolipid or Emulsan) at concentrations ranging from 0 ppm to 1000 ppm. The biosurfactant solutions in the presence of porous media often showed substantial gas hydrate catalyzation, localization on selected surfaces, and/or specific hydrate form (massive, stratified, dispersed.) At 1000-ppm concentrations of rhamnolipid, all porous media surfaces exhibited the same hydrate formation rate increase of 187% over the control. The curves generated for rhamnolipid or Emulsan concentration versus peak hydrate formation rate resembled certain classical adsorption curves. Bentonite and aragonite showed hydrate catalyzation properties with or without biosurfactants. The preference for hydrate …
Production Of Ethanol From The Fermentation Of Synthesis Gas, Christine Evon Morrison
Production Of Ethanol From The Fermentation Of Synthesis Gas, Christine Evon Morrison
Theses and Dissertations
Ethanol produced from lignocellulosic agricultural products and waste is an environmentallyriendly alternative to petroleum-derived fuel. Lignocellulosic biomass is gasified producing synthesis gas, which is composed of CO, CO2, and H2. Synthesis gas is fermented via anaerobic biocatalyst. The bacterium was grown in a fructose-rich medium then concentrated in ethanol production medium for synthesis gas fermentation. While the known ethanol-producing bacterium Clostridium ljungdahlii was used to provide baseline values for synthesis gas utilization and ethanol production, synthesis gas fermentation were conduced with a culture discovered at Mississippi State University. Additionally, efforts were made to isolate other anaerobic cultures capable of fermenting …
Production Of Acetic Acid From The Fermentation Of Synthesis Gas, Jackson Walker Ford
Production Of Acetic Acid From The Fermentation Of Synthesis Gas, Jackson Walker Ford
Theses and Dissertations
In recent years economic, environmental, and strategic concerns over the use of petroleum resources have led to increased interest in renewable resources. Biomass gasification produces a synthesis gas composed of primarily carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide, which can be fermented into a variety of fuels and chemicals. This study evaluated the performance of a two-stage approach to batch synthesis gas fermentations. The first stage employs a rich medium optimized for cell growth, while the second stage is designed to maximize production of acetic acid from synthesis gas. This two-stage approach is hypothesized to be more metabolically efficient than previous …
Investigation Into The Effect Of Various Metals' Ionic Charge And Size On Their Mobility Under The Influence Of Electrokinetics, Prashanth R. Buchireddy
Investigation Into The Effect Of Various Metals' Ionic Charge And Size On Their Mobility Under The Influence Of Electrokinetics, Prashanth R. Buchireddy
Theses and Dissertations
This research investigates the effect of ionic charge and size on the mobility of specific metal ionic species in sandy soil under an electric field. During Phase-I experiments, three ions: lithium, lead and, aluminum were initially selected for study. Since the resistance of the cell varied with time, power could not be maintained constant. Therefore, a numerical integration technique was adopted to compare the results. These results show that the mobility of the ions increased with the increase in valence of the ions (for lithium and lead). However, aluminum interacted with and adsorbed to sand. To overcome this problem, aluminum …
