The Force Is With You: Dylan Thomas's Force As It Exists In His Poetry And Drama., Josh Archer
The Force Is With You: Dylan Thomas's Force As It Exists In His Poetry And Drama., Josh Archer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In Dylan Thomas's poetry, he refers to an inexorable, amoral force that exists within the universe. This force exists in all things, yet cannot be manipulated. His first collection, 18 Poems, serves as the premier source for defining and understanding the existence of this force. Two poems in particular, "A Process in the Weather of the Heart" and "The Force that Through the Green Fuse Drives the Flower," provide the most comprehensive examination of the force. However, his idea of the force is not confined to his poetry. During the last years of his life, he completed a play …

Characterization Of A Catechol-Type Siderophore And The Detection Of A Possible Outer Membrane Receptor Protein From Rhizobium Leguminosarum Strain Iari 312., Brianne Lee Clark
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many gram-negative bacteria produce and secrete siderophores under iron-deficient conditions. Siderophores are low molecular weight compounds (600-1500 Daltons), which chelate ferric iron with an extremely high affinity, and the complex is actively transported across the outer and inner membranes of gram-negative bacteria. There are two main classes of siderophores: catechol and hydroxamate. Catechol-type siderophores chelate ferric iron via hydroxyl groups, and hydroxamate-type siderophores chelate ferric iron via a carbonyl group with an adjacent nitrogen. Rhizobia fix atmospheric nitrogen symbiotically in leguminous plants using the iron-containing enzyme nitrogenase. To satisfy their iron requirements, many rhizobia are known to produce siderophores. Rhizobium …
Nongenomic Effects Of Estrogens On Epithelial Chloride Secretion., Sabyasachi Moulik
Nongenomic Effects Of Estrogens On Epithelial Chloride Secretion., Sabyasachi Moulik
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The human colonic cell line T84, a model for studying epithelial chloride secretion and cystic fibrosis chloride channel (CFTR) function, was used to investigate the regulatory role of estrogens in transepithelial ion transport. Estrogens and other steroid hormones do not stimulate chloride secretion by themselves. However, 17 β-estradiol (17β-E2) rapidly (within seconds to minutes) potentiates carbachol- and thapsigargin-stimulated chloride secretion measured as short circuit current in voltage-clamped T84 monolayer cultures. The cholinergic agonist carbachol and the SR Ca2+ ATPase inhibitor thapsigargin stimulate chloride secretion by elevating intracellular calcium. 17α-estradiol, a stereoisomer that does not activate nuclear estrogen receptors, is …
Differential Adolescent Delinquency Tolerance And The Effect Of Race And Gender, Evaristus Obinyan
Differential Adolescent Delinquency Tolerance And The Effect Of Race And Gender, Evaristus Obinyan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The study was designed to examine the attitudes of adolescents towards the tolerance of delinquent behavior. It was postulated that there would be a differential in the tolerance of delinquent behavior by juveniles from different age, gender, and racial groups. It was hypothesized that different groups would score higher or lower on select measures or dimensions (definition, reporting, controlling, preventing, correcting) of delinquency tolerance, and that their level of tolerance of delinquency might prove useful in explaining participation in delinquency.
The focus of the study was on identification of differential attitudes of various subgroups towards the violations of norms relating …
Sinusoidal Length Oscillation- And Receptor-Mediated Mrna Expression Of Myosin Isoforms And Α-Sm Actin In Airway Smooth Muscle, Melissa Wahl, Thomas J. Eddinger, Chi-Ming Hai
Sinusoidal Length Oscillation- And Receptor-Mediated Mrna Expression Of Myosin Isoforms And Α-Sm Actin In Airway Smooth Muscle, Melissa Wahl, Thomas J. Eddinger, Chi-Ming Hai
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
We tested the hypothesis that sinusoidal length oscillation and receptor activation interactively regulate the abundance of mRNA encoding α-smooth muscle (α-SM) actin and myosin isoforms in intact bovine tracheal smooth muscle. We found that sinusoidal length oscillation significantly downregulated abundance of mRNA encoding α-SM actin mRNA in unstimulated tissues but not in histamine- and carbachol-activated tissues. This observation suggests antagonistic interactions between mechanical stretch and receptor-mediated signal transduction in regulating the abundance of mRNA encoding α-SM actin in intact airway smooth muscle. This pattern of antagonistic interaction was also observed in cholinergic receptor activation experiments. Whereas carbachol significantly upregulated myosin …
Direct Least-Squares Ellipse Fitting, Jane Courtney, Annraoi Depaor
Direct Least-Squares Ellipse Fitting, Jane Courtney, Annraoi Depaor
Conference Papers
Many biological and astronomical forms can be best represented by ellipses. While some more complex curves might represent the shape more accurately, ellipses have the advantage that they are easily parameterised and define the location, orientation and dimensions of the data more clearly. In this paper, we present a method of direct least-squares ellipse fitting by solving a generalised eigensystem. This is more efficient and more accurate than many alternative approaches to the ellipse-fitting problem such as fuzzy c-shells clustering and Hough transforms. This method was developed for human body modelling as part of a larger project to design a …

Three-Dimensional Modeling Of Lacustrine Diatom Habitat Areas: Improving Paleolimnological Interpretation Of Planktic : Benthic Ratios, Jeffery R. Stone, Sherilyn C. Fritz
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Three-dimensional modeling of lake morphometry enables the calculation of lake volume, planar surface area, and basin surface area, which are critical components of a conceptual model of how planktic and benthic habitat areas change with changing lake level. We have applied three-dimensional modeling to Foy Lake, Montana, and compared model results of changing ratios of planktic and benthic habitat areas at all possible lake levels to sediment cores recovered from the lake. The model allows us to produce semiquantitative depth reconstructions and greatly improves lake-level reconstruction of this morphometrically complex basin. The conceptual model also was modified to examine the …

Growth And Yield Of Black Spruce, Picea Mariana (Mill.) B.S.Pl., In Alaska, Carolyn Rosner
Forest Sciences
Black spruce, Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P., is largely overlooked in Alaska because of its small size and slow growth. Growth and yield information is therefore limited or nonexistent. Presented here are the first polymorphic site index (height-age) curves and height-diameter functions for predicting height and volume for Alaska black spruce. Models are accurate for trees up to 50 feet in height and 8 inches DBH. Predicted stem volumes range from 0.006 ft3 to 21.8 ft3 for trees between 0.5 and 11.5 inches DBH Sampled tree dimensions range from 5.5 to 78.0 feet tall and from 0.4 to 11.0 inches DBH. …
Remote Sensing Of Burn Severity And The Interactions Between Burn Severity, Topography And Vegetation In Interior Alaska, Justin Frederick Epting
Remote Sensing Of Burn Severity And The Interactions Between Burn Severity, Topography And Vegetation In Interior Alaska, Justin Frederick Epting
Forest Sciences
A variety of single-band, band ratio, vegetation index, and multivariate algorithms were evaluated for mapping burn severity using Landsat TM and ETM+ imagery across four burns in interior Alaska. The Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) outperformed all algorithms, both when tested as a single post-fire value and when tested as a differenced (prefire-postfire) value. The NBR was then used to map burn severity at a historical burn near Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve and a time-series of images from 1986 to 2002 was analyzed to investigate interactions between vegetation, burn severity, and topography. Strong interactions existed between vegetation and burn severity, but …
The Migration And Spawning Distribution Of Sockeye Salmon Within Lake Clark, Alaska, Daniel B. Young
The Migration And Spawning Distribution Of Sockeye Salmon Within Lake Clark, Alaska, Daniel B. Young
Fisheries
Recent declines in the number of sockeye salmon Onchorynchus nerka returning to Lake Clark, Alaska have caused economic hardship in the region and raised resource concerns among local subsistence users and Federal managers. A lack of information regarding the distribution of spawning habitats in the glacially turbid Lake Clark watershed instigated this research. Radio telemetry was used to 1) determine the in-lake movement patterns of adult sockeye salmon and 2) identify sockeye salmon spawning locations. Sockeye salmon were radio tagged at they entered Lake Clark and tracked to spawning locations. After entering Lake Clark, sockeye salmon usually migrated to a …
Movement Of The Giant Red Sea Cucumber Parastichopus Californicus In Southeastern Alaska, Kristin Cieciel
Movement Of The Giant Red Sea Cucumber Parastichopus Californicus In Southeastern Alaska, Kristin Cieciel
Fisheries
This thesis provides information on sea cucumber movement that could inform management of the growing fishery for the sea cucumber, Parastichopus californicus, in Southeast Alaska. Daily movement of individual P. californicus was quantified at six sites to assess spatial variation in movement, at three-month intervals over one year at one site to assess seasonal changes in movement, and densities were measured monthly at three depths over one year. Movements varied among seasons and sites ranging from 0 to 34.5 m·24 h⁻¹, and were highest in summer (mean ± SE = 4.6 ± 0.5 m) and lowest in fall (mean ± …
Agonistic Behavior, Social Dominance, And Predator Evasion Of Oncorhynchus Mykiss From Lake And Stream Parents: An Evaluation Of Lacustrine Refuges As A Conservation Strategy For Threatened Or Endangered Salmonids, Erika R. Ammann
Fisheries
The possibility of lakes providing temporary natural refugia for endangered salmonid populations, creating an alternative to hatchery propagation, is the context for this research. To investigate this possibility resident trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) derived from a population that had been sequestered in a lake for seventy years were compared to fish from their founding anadromous steelhead trout population as well as to hybrid crosses of the two populations. Comparisons were made in the areas of aggression, dominance and predator evasion. In aggression trials the lake-derived population chased more than stream-derived O. mykiss at two life stages, age-0 and age-1. Lake-derived fry …
Effects Of Outbreeding On Embryonic Development Timing Of Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha), Ivan Alan Wang
Effects Of Outbreeding On Embryonic Development Timing Of Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha), Ivan Alan Wang
Fisheries
I studied the effects of outbreeding on embryonic development timing of pink salmon. I used standardized development stages and germ ring opening measurements to compare the variation of development at epiboly for odd- and even-broodyear F₂ hybrids. Analyses of timing of development at epiboly showed no effects of outbreeding depression, but did show a maternal effect for both crosses and backcrosses; and backcross families differed between replicates. These observations suggest that experimental designs lacking consideration of maternal effects or testing for replicate container effects in early salmon development studies may be flawed. I also compared the variation of hatching times …

Development, Growth, And Egg Production Of Centropages Abdominalis And Neocalanus Flemingeri From The Eastern Subarctic Pacific, Laura Michelle Slater
Marine Biology
Copepods dominate oceanic mesozooplankton in terms of abundance and biomass thus contributing a significant source of secondary production. I determined development, growth, and egg production of Centropages abdominalis and Neocalanus flemingeri at temperatures representative of the northern Gulf of Alaska in spring. Median development times from eggs to adults were 42 and 59 days for C. abdominalis at 5 and 7°C, respectively, and 117 days from eggs to copepodite stage five for N. flemingeri at 5°C. Average copepodite growth rates were 0.08 and 0.17 d⁻¹ for C. abdominalis at 5 and 7°C, respectively, and 0.15 d⁻¹ for N. flemingeri at …
Kelp Bed Variability And Fish Population Dynamics In Kachemak Bay, Alaska, Judith Ann Hamilton
Kelp Bed Variability And Fish Population Dynamics In Kachemak Bay, Alaska, Judith Ann Hamilton
Marine Biology
Understanding interactions between kelp beds and fishes is essential because anthropogenic changes and natural variability in these beds (composition, density, and distribution) may affect available habitat for fishes. In Alaska, little is known about the annual and seasonal variability of macroalgal cover in kelp beds and corresponding changes in associated fish populations. This study investigated natural variability using monthly SCUBA surveys in Kachemak Bay, Alaska from May 2002 to September 2003. Ten shallow (approximately 7m water depth) nearshore kelp beds with varying degrees of macroalgal cover were surveyed visually for fishes and kelp, and measurements of environmental variables were collected. …
Freezing Tolerance And Survival Experiments With Various Intertidal Organisms From Kachemak Bay, Alaska, Heather Kristine Patterson
Freezing Tolerance And Survival Experiments With Various Intertidal Organisms From Kachemak Bay, Alaska, Heather Kristine Patterson
Marine Biology
Intertidal organisms at high latitudes experience multiple stresses created by freezing, including ischemia, free water reduction, and distortion and destruction of cells, and in response have adapted behavioral and physiological solutions. This study examined the response of intertidal organisms in Kachemak Bay, Alaska to freezing through laboratory experiments and field studies. Mytilus trossulus, Balanus glandula, Protothaca staminea and various limpets (Lottidae) survived freezing conditions to -10 and -20°C, depending on the season. Mytilus trossulus and B. glandula survived multiple freeze events at -10°C. Seasonal freeze response was not induced by exposure to low air temperature in M trossulus. Exposure to …
The E!Ect Of Trap Spacing On The Capture Of Brown Tree Snakes On Guam, Richard M. Engeman, Michael A. Linnell
The E!Ect Of Trap Spacing On The Capture Of Brown Tree Snakes On Guam, Richard M. Engeman, Michael A. Linnell
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Trapping is central to the integrated control program to deter brown tree snakes from entering the outbound cargo 1ow from Guam. Trapping brown tree snakes is effective, but labor intensive. Increasing inter-trap spacings without loss of e3cacy could substantially increase the e3ciency of efforts to prevent dispersal of this species. Inter-trap spacings of 20, 30 and 40 m along perimeter trap lines were compared using recaptures of tagged brown tree snakes. No differences were found among the different spacing distances for the distribution of recapture times. The results indicate that for some situations, snake trapping may be extended or made …

Growth And Nutritional Development Of Reindeer (Rangifer Tarandus) And Muskoxen (Ovibos Moschatus), Katrina K. Knott
Growth And Nutritional Development Of Reindeer (Rangifer Tarandus) And Muskoxen (Ovibos Moschatus), Katrina K. Knott
Biological Sciences
Young ruminants must grow and develop digestive function during brief summers in the Arctic. I examined growth and development of nutritional organs in reindeer and muskoxen as neonates (1 d), during transition from milk to forage (30-60 d) and at maturity. Reindeer and muskoxen gave birth to relatively smaller offspring than ruminants from more temperate regions. Costs of small birth mass are likely offset in neonates by an increase of thyroid hormones to enhance thermogenesis and hepatic reserves that provide additional nutrients during early development. Body mass gains during the neonatal period (1-30 d) were associated with well-developed abomasa that …
Duckling Survival And Incubation Behaviors In Common Goldeneyes In Interior Alaska, Joshua Harold Schmidt
Duckling Survival And Incubation Behaviors In Common Goldeneyes In Interior Alaska, Joshua Harold Schmidt
Biological Sciences
The lack of research on the common goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) in Interior Alaska prompted this study. My objectives were to estimate duckling survival relative to several explanatory variables and to characterize incubation behaviors in a subset of females nesting in the Chena River State Recreation Area. My estimates of duckling survival were higher than previously reported for this species: 0.65 (95% CI 0.49 to 0.82) and 0.68 (95% CI 0.58 to 0.79) for 2002 and 2003 respectively. Seasonally, duckling survival increased linearly throughout 2002, remained nearly constant in 2003, and was negatively related to daily precipitation in both years. Nest …

Modeling And Simulation Research And Instruction At The U.S. Air Force Academy, Russell M. Cummings, Scott A. Morton, Keith Bergeron
Aerospace Engineering
Modeling and simulation has become a driving force within the engineering and science communities as the cost of, and time for, experimentation continues to rise. Some areas of study, such as chemistry and biology, may not even have the ability to fully evaluate certain processes experimentally, making modeling and simulation even more important. The situation has led many areas of research to the necessity of modeling and simulating various processes using computers. In addition, the rise in computational capabilities (the supercomputers of a decade ago are outmoded by the PC clusters of today), has led to a paradigm shift from …
