A Proposed Voucher System For The Higher Education Of Hong Kong, Bryan Cheung Sep 2004

A Proposed Voucher System For The Higher Education Of Hong Kong, Bryan Cheung

Essays in Education

A voucher system, named financial-rebalance funding system, has been proposed to be adopted for higher education in Hong Kong in 2002. Education voucher has been proposed by Friedman as early as 1955, and reaffirmed by Gary Becker in 2002. Although, education voucher system has attracted much discussion and debate worldwide since its introduction, most of the discussion and debate are for primary and secondary education. Moreover, very little research has been undertaken on the opinions and attitudes of stakeholders from the supply-side and demand-side. Without input from these stakeholders, a funding mechanism might not function as what it is supposed …

Multiple Kh Domains Of Poly C Binding Protein Are Required For Its Trans-Activation On The Proximal Promoter Of The Mu-Opioid Receptor Gene, Adnan K. Malik Sep 2004

Multiple Kh Domains Of Poly C Binding Protein Are Required For Its Trans-Activation On The Proximal Promoter Of The Mu-Opioid Receptor Gene, Adnan K. Malik

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The mu-opioid receptor (MOR) has been shown to mediate morphine induced analgesia, addiction, and tolerance. The expression of the major product of the MOR (MOR-1) gene has been found to be driven by two promoters, a distal promoter and a proximal promoter. The proximal promoter region has been shown in previous studies to be the major promoter for the regulation of MOR gene transcription in the adult mouse brain and embryonic development. Recent studies have shown that single-stranded DNA binding proteins (such as Poly C Binding Protein) are involved in transcriptional regulation of mouse MOR gene. Poly C binding protein …

Response Of Brood-Parasitic Bronzed Cowbird To Playback Of The Song Of Audubon's Oriole, Steven G. Monk, Timothy Brush Sep 2004

Response Of Brood-Parasitic Bronzed Cowbird To Playback Of The Song Of Audubon's Oriole, Steven G. Monk, Timothy Brush

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

ABSTRACT—In the Lower Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, Audubon’s orioles (Icterus graduacauda) have declined substantially in the past 50 y, probably due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and brood parasitism by bronzed cowbirds (Molothrus aeneus). Tape playback of the song of Audubon’s oriole, originally intended to better survey the oriole, also attracted bronzed cowbirds. Bronzed cowbirds flew silently into the nearest tree in 14.1% of 234 playbacks, whereas Audubon’s orioles responded vocally or flew toward the recorder in 15.8% of playbacks. Bronzed cowbirds might use vocalizations of Audubon’s oriole as a cue to find breeding pairs or nests of this …

Lower Grand River Watershed Management Plan, Fishbeck, Thompson, Car & Huber, Inc. Sep 2004

Lower Grand River Watershed Management Plan, Fishbeck, Thompson, Car & Huber, Inc.

Watershed Management Plans and Reports

A Watershed Management Plan (WMP) considers many aspects of water usage and functions, and coordinates them into a comprehensive plan for managing the activities that govern how our natural resources are utilized or viewed. A WMP is developed to provide direction and prioritize how resources are used for the management, protection, or restoration of a watershed. A watershed approach is ideal for managing water resources since they cross jurisdictions and political boundaries. Often this fluid nature of water is overlooked or taken for granted. Water flows over the ground and picks up pollutants before reaching a lake, stream, wetland, or …

The New Neurobiology Of Severe Psychiatric Disorders And Its Implications For Laws Governing Involuntary Commitment And Treatment, E Fuller Torrey, Ken Kress Aug 2004

The New Neurobiology Of Severe Psychiatric Disorders And Its Implications For Laws Governing Involuntary Commitment And Treatment, E Fuller Torrey, Ken Kress

ExpressO

Medical advances have led to statutory changes and common law overrulings. This paper argues that such changes are now needed for laws governing the involuntary commitment and treatment of individuals with severe psychiatric disorders. Recent advances in the understanding of the neurobiology of these disorders have rendered obsolete many assumptions underlying past statutes and legal decisions. This is illustrated by using schizophrenia as an example and examining two influential cases: California’s Lanterman-Petris-Short Act (1969) and Wisconsin’s Lessard decision (1972). It is concluded that laws governing involuntary commitment and treatment need to be updated to incorporate the current neurobiological understanding of …

Pitchfork Bifurcations Of Invariant Manifolds, Jyoti Champanerkar Aug 2004

Pitchfork Bifurcations Of Invariant Manifolds, Jyoti Champanerkar

Dissertations

In a parameter dependent, dynamical system, when the qualitative structure of the solutions changes due to a small change in the parameter, the system is said to have undergone a bifurcation. Bifurcations have been classified on the basis of the topological properties of fixed points and invariant manifolds of dynamical systems. A pitchfork bifurcation in R is said to have occurred when a stable fixed point becomes unstable and two new stable fixed points, separated by the unstable fixed point come into existence.

In this thesis, a pitchfork bifurcation of an (in- 1)-dimensional invariant submani-fold of a dynamical system in …

Modeling Contaminant Transport And Fate And Subsequent Impacts On Ecosystems, Ming Fan Aug 2004

Modeling Contaminant Transport And Fate And Subsequent Impacts On Ecosystems, Ming Fan

Dissertations

Assessing risks associated with the release of metals into the environment and managing remedial activities requires simulation tools that depict speciation and risk with accurate mechanistic models and well-defined transport parameters. Such tools need to address the following processes: (1) aqueous speciation, (2) distribution mechanisms, (3) transport, and (4) ecological risk. The primary objective of this research is to develop a simulation tool that accounts for these processes. Speciation in the aqueous phase can be assessed with geochemical equilibrium models, such as MINEQL+. Furthermore, metal distribution can be addressed mechanistically. Studies with Pb sorption to amorphous aluminum (HAG), iron (HFO), …

Toxicity Of Manufactured Particulate Materials On Plant Root Growth, Ling Yang Aug 2004

Toxicity Of Manufactured Particulate Materials On Plant Root Growth, Ling Yang

Dissertations

The rapid development of particle technology and the growing use of particulate materials in industries are bringing large amounts of manufactured particles into the environment. Epidemiological studies suggest that fine particles (particles with aerodynamic diameter smaller than 2.5 μm, i.e., PM2.5) have an association with various adverse health effects in humans. Mass studies have been performed on the toxicity and toxicological mechanisms of airborne particles such as PM2.5 and PM10, but there are very few investigations which contribute to the knowledge base on biological implications of manufactured particulate materials. Up to now, the published toxicity …

Significance Analysis Of Time Course Microarray Experiments, John D. Storey, Wenzhong Xiao, Jeffrey T. Leek, Ronald G. Tompkins, Ron W. Davis

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Characterizing the genome-wide dynamic regulation of gene expression is important and will be of much interest in the future. However, there is currently no established method for identifying differentially expressed genes in a time course study. Here we propose a significance method for analyzing time course microarray studies that can be applied to the typical types of comparisons and sampling schemes. This method is applied to two studies on humans. In one study, genes are identified that show differential expression over time in response to in vivo endotoxin administration. Using our method 7409 genes are called significant at a 1% …

Identification And Characterization Of Phosphoseryl-Trna [Ser]Sec Kinase, Bradley A. Carlson, Xue-Ming Xu, Gregory V. Kryukov, Mahadev Rao, Marla J. Berry, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield Aug 2004

Identification And Characterization Of Phosphoseryl-Trna [Ser]Sec Kinase, Bradley A. Carlson, Xue-Ming Xu, Gregory V. Kryukov, Mahadev Rao, Marla J. Berry, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

In 1970, a kinase activity that phosphorylated a minor species of seryl-tRNA to form phosphoseryl-tRNA was found in rooster liver [Maenpaa, P. H. & Bernfield, M. R. (1970) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 67, 688–695], and a minor seryl-tRNA that decoded the nonsense UGA was detected in bovine liver. The phosphoseryl-tRNA and the minor UGA-decoding seryl-tRNA were subsequently identified as selenocysteine (Sec) tRNA [Ser]Sec, but the kinase activity remained elusive. Herein, by using a comparative genomics approach that searched completely sequenced archaeal genomes for a kinase-like protein with a pattern of occurrence similar to that of components of Sec …

Characterization Of Mechanical Behavior Of Electrospun Non-Woven Mats, Ajitha Patlolla Aug 2004

Characterization Of Mechanical Behavior Of Electrospun Non-Woven Mats, Ajitha Patlolla

Theses

Electrospinning is a simple and efficient method for the production of nanometer to micrometer fibers. While the process of electrospinning has been known for over half a century, current understanding of the process and those parameters that affect the properties of the fibers is very limited. Not much work has been done in the field electrospinning process to study the mechanical properties of nonwoven mats produced and to study parameters affecting their properties.

In the first part of this thesis electrospun nonwoven mats made of poly(lactides) solutions were characterized based on their mechanical behavior in biorelevant conditions. In the second …

Thermal Analysis Of Poly(Desamino Arylates), Ali Cem Recber Aug 2004

Thermal Analysis Of Poly(Desamino Arylates), Ali Cem Recber

Theses

The goal of this study is to better understand the thermal characteristics and molecular behavior of two poly(desaminotyrosyl arylates). These two polymers were chosen from a combinatorial library of polymers developed by changing the type and size of the two substitutable chain locations. TGA, DSC and TSC studies were conducted on Poly(12,10) and Poly(2,2) after the samples were exposed to various conditions. The TGA of Poly(12,10) shows low water uptake at 25° C, higher water uptake at 80°C. Water uptake for Poly(2,2) at 25°C is similar to Poly(12,10) at 80°C. The Thermally Stimulated Current analysis (TSC) results indicate a molecular …

Singular Value Decomposition Of Analogs Of Gbr 12909, Anna Fiorentino Aug 2004

Singular Value Decomposition Of Analogs Of Gbr 12909, Anna Fiorentino

Theses

Analogs of GBR 12909 are drugs that could potentially be used to treat cocaine addiction. Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) is a multivariate analysis technique used to show relationships between the data and the variables associated with the data. The input data consists of the conformers of each analog (DM324, 728 conformers; TP250, 739 conformers) along with the eight torsional angles (Al, A2, B1-B6). A novel scaling technique was developed to address the problem of data circularity by subtracting the values of the torsional angles of the global energy minimum conformation from those of each conformer.

In SVD the original data …

Since the dicovery of liposome or lipid vesicles derived from self limiting enclosed lipid bilayer upon hydration, liposome drug delivery systems have played a significant role in formulation of potent drugs to improve therapeutics. Currenlty most of these liposome formulation are designed to reduced toxicity and to some extent increase accumulation at the target site(s) in a the number of clinical application. The current pharmaceutical preparations of liposome based therapeutics stem from our understanding of lipid drug interactions and the liposome disposition mechanism including the inhibition of rapid clearance of liposome by controlling size , charge and surface hydration.
