Heterogeneous Self-Reconfiguring Robotics, Robert Charles Fitch Sep 2004

Heterogeneous Self-Reconfiguring Robotics, Robert Charles Fitch

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Self-reconfiguring (SR) robots are modular systems that can autonomously change shape, or reconfigure, for increased versatility and adaptability in unknown environments. In this thesis, we investigate planning and control for systems of non-identical modules, known as heterogeneous SR robots. Although previous approaches rely on module homogeneity as a critical property, we show that the planning complexity of fundamental algorithmic problems in the heterogeneous case is equivalent to that of systems with identical modules. Primarily, we study the problem of how to plan shape changes while considering the placement of specific modules within the structure. We characterize this key challenge in …

Where Should Buffers Go? Modeling Riparian Habitat Connectivity In Northeast Kansas, Gary Bentrup, Todd Kellerman Sep 2004

Where Should Buffers Go? Modeling Riparian Habitat Connectivity In Northeast Kansas, Gary Bentrup, Todd Kellerman

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Through many funding programs, riparian buffers are being created on agricultural lands to address significant water quality problems. Society and landowners are demanding many other environmental and social services (e.g., wildlife habitat and income diversification) from this practice. Resource planners therefore need to design riparian buffer systems in the right places to provide multiple services. However, scientific guidance for this is lacking. We developed a geographic information system (GIS)-based assessment method for quickly identifying where buffers can be established to restore connectivity of riparian areas for the benefit of terrestrial wildlife. An area in northeastern Kansas was selected to evaluate …

What Can Birds Hear?, Robert C. Beason Sep 2004

What Can Birds Hear?, Robert C. Beason

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

For bids, hearing is second in importance only to vision for monitoring the world around them. ./\vim hearing is most sensitive to sounds from about 1 to 4 kHz, although they can hear higher and lower frequencies. No species of bird has shown sensitivity to ultrasonic frequencies (>20 kHz). Sensitivity to frequencies below 20 Hz (dasound) has not received much attention; however, pigeons and a few other species have shown behavioral and physiological responses to these low frequencies. In general, frequency discrimination in birds is only about one-half or one-third as good it is for humans within the 1 …

Heat Shock Protein 70 Protects Cells From Cell Cycle Arrest And Apoptosis Induced By Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Viral Protein R, Yuqi Zhao, Larisa Dubrovsky, Tatiana Iordanskaya, Mongzhong Chen, Dong Liang, Michael Bukrinsky, Sergey Iordanskiy Sep 2004

Heat Shock Protein 70 Protects Cells From Cell Cycle Arrest And Apoptosis Induced By Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Viral Protein R, Yuqi Zhao, Larisa Dubrovsky, Tatiana Iordanskaya, Mongzhong Chen, Dong Liang, Michael Bukrinsky, Sergey Iordanskiy

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Viral protein R (Vpr) of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is an accessory protein that plays an important role in viral pathogenesis. This pathogenic activity of Vpr is related in part to its capacity to induce cell cycle G2 arrest and apoptosis of target T cells. A screening for multicopy suppressors of these Vpr activities in fission yeast identified heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) as a suppressor of Vpr-induced cell cycle arrest. Hsp70 is a member of a family of molecular chaperones involved in innate immunity and protection from environmental stress. In this report, we demonstrate that HIV-1 …

Lognormal X-Ray Flux Variations In An Extreme Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy, C. Martin Gaskell Sep 2004

Lognormal X-Ray Flux Variations In An Extreme Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy, C. Martin Gaskell

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We show that the large variations in the X-ray flux of the extreme narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 13224– 3809, measured during a 10 day ASCA observation, have a two-parameter lognormal distribution of multiplicative standard deviation σmult = 2.7 and that the amplitude of variability at any given moment is proportional to the flux level. We find similar behavior in earlier ROSAT soft X-ray monitoring. There is no evidence of a nonvariable component. The flux-dependent behavior of the variability rules out linear shot-noise models. Although at first glance the variations of the ASCAlight curve for IRAS 13224–3809 appear …

Ethnic Differences In Hypertension And Blood Pressure Control. Issues For Prevention Strategies, Pietro A. Modesti Sep 2004

Ethnic Differences In Hypertension And Blood Pressure Control. Issues For Prevention Strategies, Pietro A. Modesti

Saudi Medical Journal

opulation studies revealed significantly lower levels of hypertension among rural community than both semi-urban and recently urbanized communities, and much of the difference was attributed to environmental factors. Migration studies revealed that increased sodium consumption is a key factor for the development of hypertension in some ethnic group, and people of African origin are known to be more prone to develop hypertension in western countries. Recent data obtained in European countries reveals that the rates of detection, treatment, and control are higher among the black population indicating a greater awareness among the general public and physicians in Europe of the …

Understanding The Glory Of God Through The Expository Preaching By Young Sun Park, Young Han Park

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this project is to understand the glory of God through the expository preaching by Young Sun Park. The reason I write this thesis is that I was called and challenged to be a preacher and pastor by God, after listening to the sermon by my pastor, Young Sun Park.

What does it mean to bring Glory to God?

How can it be realized? God the Father took glory through the ministry and personality of His Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ. God receives glory by saving sinners and by our obedient living which can be demonstrated through worship …

Characterization Of The Aspergillus Parasiticus Delta12-Desaturase Gene: A Role For Lipid Metabolism In The Aspergillus/Plant Interaction, Ana M. Calvo, R.A. Wilson, P.K. Chang, N.P. Keller

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

In the mycotoxigenic oilseed pathogens Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus and the model filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans, unsaturated fatty acids and their derivatives act as important developmental signals that affect asexual conidiospore, sexual ascospore and/or sclerotial development. To dissect the relationship between lipid metabolism and fungal development, an A. parasiticus D12-desaturase mutant that was unable to convert oleic acid to linoleic acid and was thus impaired in polyunsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis was generated. The D12-desaturase mutant demonstrates delayed spore germination, a twofold reduction in growth, a reduced level of conidiation and complete loss of sclerotial development, compared to the wild-type. …

On The Approximation Of The Coriolis Terms In C-Grid Models, Dmitri A. Nechaev, Max Yaremchuk Sep 2004

On The Approximation Of The Coriolis Terms In C-Grid Models, Dmitri A. Nechaev, Max Yaremchuk

Faculty Publications

A new representation of the Coriolis terms on the Arakawa C grid is proposed. The approximation dumps the grid-scale noise that arises because of spatial averaging of the Coriolis terms when the grid spacing is larger than the deformation radius. The proposed approximation can also be applied in C-grid schemes with semi-implicit treatment of the Coriolis terms. The new scheme is analyzed in the context of the linear inertial-gravity waves and its advantageous behavior is demonstrated with respect to the conventional technique.

Alkaline Anaerobic Respiration: Isolation And Characterization Of A Novel Alkaliphilic And Metal-Reducing Bacterium, Qi Ye, Yul Roh, Susan L. Carroll, Benjamin Blair, Jizhong Zhou, Chuanlun Zhang, Matthew Fields

Research, Publications & Creative Work

Iron-reducing enrichments were obtained from leachate ponds at the U.S. Borax Company in Boron, Calif. Based on partial small-subunit (SSU) rRNA gene sequences (approximately 500 nucleotides), six isolates shared 98.9% nucleotide identity. As a representative, the isolate QYMF was selected for further analysis. QYMF could be grown with Fe(III)-citrate, Fe(III)-EDTA, Co(III)-EDTA, or Cr(VI) as electron acceptors, and yeast extract and lactate could serve as electron donors. Growth during iron reduction occurred over the pH range of 7.5 to 11.0 (optimum, pH 9.5), a sodium chloride range of 0 to 80 g/liter (optimum, 20 g/liter), and a temperature range of 4 …

Zebra Mussels Affect Benthic Predator Foraging Success, Mark Beekey, D. J. Mccabe, I. E. Marsden Sep 2004

Zebra Mussels Affect Benthic Predator Foraging Success, Mark Beekey, D. J. Mccabe, I. E. Marsden

Biology Faculty Publications

The introduction of zebra mussels (Dreissena spp.) to North America has resulted in dramatic changes to the complexity of benthic habitats. Changes in habitat complexity may have profound effects on predator-prey interactions in aquatic communities. Increased habitat complexity may affect prey and predator dynamics by reducing encounter rates and foraging success. Zebra mussels form thick contiguous colonies on both hard and soft substrates. While the colonization of substrata by zebra mussels has generally resulted in an increase in both the abundance and diversity of benthic invertebrate communities, it is not well known how these changes affect the foraging efficiencies of …

A Proposed Voucher System For The Higher Education Of Hong Kong, Bryan Cheung Sep 2004

A Proposed Voucher System For The Higher Education Of Hong Kong, Bryan Cheung

Essays in Education

A voucher system, named financial-rebalance funding system, has been proposed to be adopted for higher education in Hong Kong in 2002. Education voucher has been proposed by Friedman as early as 1955, and reaffirmed by Gary Becker in 2002. Although, education voucher system has attracted much discussion and debate worldwide since its introduction, most of the discussion and debate are for primary and secondary education. Moreover, very little research has been undertaken on the opinions and attitudes of stakeholders from the supply-side and demand-side. Without input from these stakeholders, a funding mechanism might not function as what it is supposed …

Cholinergic Modulation Of The Locomotor Network In The Lamprey Spinal Cord, Katharina A. Quinlan, Peter G. Placas, James T. Buchanan

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Acetylcholine (ACh) was found here to be a strong modulator of swimming activity in the isolated spinal cord preparation of the adult lamprey (Ichthyomyzon unicuspis). During fictive swimming induced with either D-glutamate or N-methyl-D-aspartate, addition of ACh (200 µM) significantly reduced the cycle period of ventral root bursts to 54%, intersegmental phase lag to 32%, and ventral root burst proportion to 80% of control levels. Effects of ACh were apparent at concentrations as low as 1 µM. Both nicotinic and muscarinic receptors are involved, in that application of either nicotinic or muscarinic agonists alone significantly reduced cycle …
