Macrocycle-Derived Functional Xanthenes And Progress Towards Concurrent Detection Of Glucose And Fructose, Oleksandr Rusin, Onur Alpturk, Ming He, Jorge O. Escobedo, Shan Jiang, Fareed Dawan, Kun Lian, Matthew E. Mccarroll, Isiah M. Warner, Robert M. Strongin Sep 2004

Macrocycle-Derived Functional Xanthenes And Progress Towards Concurrent Detection Of Glucose And Fructose, Oleksandr Rusin, Onur Alpturk, Ming He, Jorge O. Escobedo, Shan Jiang, Fareed Dawan, Kun Lian, Matthew E. Mccarroll, Isiah M. Warner, Robert M. Strongin

The detection of saccharides in biological media is of great current importance for the monitoring of disease states. We have previously reported that solutions of boronic acid-functionalized macrocycles form acyclic oligomeric materials in situ. The oligomers contain fluorescent xanthene moieties. Current efforts are aimed at modulating the spectroscopic responses of these materials for the analysis of specific sugars. We describe conditions whereby the xanthene boronic acids exhibit high colorimetric fructose selectivity. In contrast, at physiological levels selective glucose monitoring can be achieved via fluorescence. Additionally, we describe a method which exhibits promise for detecting both glucose and fructose at dual …

Test Of The Mechanotactile Hypothesis: Neuromast Morphology And Response Dynamics Of Mechanosensory Lateral Line Primary Afferents In The Stingray, Karen P. Maruska, Timothy C. Tricas Sep 2004

Test Of The Mechanotactile Hypothesis: Neuromast Morphology And Response Dynamics Of Mechanosensory Lateral Line Primary Afferents In The Stingray, Karen P. Maruska, Timothy C. Tricas

Faculty Publications

The mechanotactile hypothesis proposes that ventral non-pored lateral line canals in the stingray function to facilitate localization of prey that contact the skin during benthic feeding. This study used comparative neurophysiological and morphological techniques to test whether ventral non-pored canals encode the velocity of skin movements, and show other adaptations that may enhance detection of tactile stimuli from their prey. Resting discharge rate of lateral line primary afferent neurons was lower among units from ventral than dorsal canal groups. The ventral non-pored canals had a higher proportion of silent units (31%) than either ventral (3%) or dorsal (13%) pored canals, …

The Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Proteins Ccp1 And Ccp2 Are Required For Long-Term Growth, But Are Not Necessary For Efficient Photosynthesis, In A Low-Co2 Environment, Steve V. Pollock, Davey L. Prout, Ashley C. Godfrey, Stephane D. Lemaire, James V. Moroney Sep 2004

Moroney

Faculty Publications

The unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii acclimates to a low-CO2 environment by modifying the expression of a number of messages. Many of the genes that increase in abundance during acclimation to low-CO2 are under the control of the putative transcription factor Cia5. C. reinhardtii mutants null for cia5 do not express several of the known low-CO2 inducible genes and do not grow in a low-CO2 environment. Two of the genes under the control of Cia5, Ccp1 and Ccp2, encode polypeptides that are localized to the chloroplast envelope and have a high degree of similarity to members of the mitochondrial carrier …

Sustainable Water Supply In Ireland, Liam Mccarton, Sean O'Hogain Sep 2004

Sustainable Water Supply In Ireland, Liam Mccarton, Sean O'Hogain

Reports

Sustainable water technology is concerned with the complete range of technologies, techniques, products and processes that will enable humankind to reduce the impact of water production and water consumption on the environment and to establish a more sustainable mode of development. The concept of sustainable development has gained wide usage over the past 15 years in an attempt to balance development needs and environmental protection. The Brundtland Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development, Our Common Future (1987) identified sustainable development as a global objective, which involved economic, social and environmental values. It defined sustainable development as ‘ …

Storm Water Management For Society And Nature Via Service Learning, Ecological Engineering And Ecohydrology, Theodore A. Endreny Sep 2004

Storm Water Management For Society And Nature Via Service Learning, Ecological Engineering And Ecohydrology, Theodore A. Endreny

Higher Education

A framework for urban storm-water management that moves beyond flood control to improve societal and ecological services will maximize the functions and benefits of water resources management. Theoretical constructs for such work originate from the integration of ecological engineering, ecohydrology and service learning paradigms. Implementation consists of simulating, monitoring and reporting how storm-water design decisions to infiltrate or directly discharge runoff result in a complex set of linked adjustments to the dynamics of the water table, soil chemistry concentrations, plant stress/viability, terrestrial habitat, river loads/flows, and aquatic habitat patterns. Coordination of a socio-ecological-based urban storm-water management programme is discussed using …

Where Have All The Native Fish Gone? The Fate Of Fish That Lewis And Clark Encountered On The Lower Columbia River, Virginia L. Butler Sep 2004

Where Have All The Native Fish Gone? The Fate Of Fish That Lewis And Clark Encountered On The Lower Columbia River, Virginia L. Butler

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

As part of a special issue of the 'Oregon Historical Quarterly,' discusses the native species of fish in the lower Columbia River described by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark in 1805-06. They identified red charr, salmon trout, sturgeon, anchovy, skeet, and other fish that Indians caught and used as trade items with the Corps of Discovery. However, editors of the Lewis and Clark journals have often erred in identifying the fish Lewis and Clark described; the challenge in identifying anadromous fish lies in changing coloration, markings, and examination of habitat. There has been a drastic decline of native fish since …

Relationship Between Plasma Angiotensinii, Leptin And Arterial Blood Pressure, Awdah M. Al-Hazimi, Ahmad Y. Syiamic

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Obesity and hypertension are 2 closely associated conditions and obesity probably predisposed to hypertension. The mechanism of the association between obesity and hypertension is not clear. The aim of the present study was to clarify the relationship between blood pressure (BP), body mass index (BMI), serum angiotensinII (AGII) and serum leptin levels and to investigate the relation between serum AGII and leptin. This study also aimed to rule out if there is a difference in serum AGII and leptin levels between lean and obese hypertensive females. METHODS: We measured fasting serum AGII and leptin levels in 16 normotensive lean …
