Self-Help Group Participation And Empowerment In Hong Kong, Bong-Ho Mok Sep 2004

Self-Help Group Participation And Empowerment In Hong Kong, Bong-Ho Mok

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper reports on the first comprehensive study of self-help groups in Hong Kong. Initial findings from the quantative and qualitative data suggest that self-help group participation has an impact on intrapersonal, interpersonal and community/political empowerment. Based on existing data, this study has resulted in the development of a hypothetical model encompassing the interrelationships among self-help group participation, social support, social learning, leadership and empowerment, for testing in future research.

Immunogold Labeling To Enhance Contrast In Optical Coherence Microscopy Of Tissue Engineered Corneal Constructs, Chris B. Raub, Elizabeth J. Orwin, Richard C. Haskell

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Our lab has used an optical coherence microscope (OCM) to assess both the structure of tissue-engineered corneal constructs and their transparency. Currently, we are not able to resolve cells versus collagen matrix material in the images produced. We would like to distinguish cells in order to determine if they are viable while growing in culture and also if they are significantly contributing to the light scattering in the tissue. In order to do this, we are currently investigating the use of immunogold labeling. Gold nanoparticles are high scatterers and can create contrast in images. We have conjugated gold nanoparticles to …

Nitrogen Isotope Dynamics Of The Cariaco Basin, Venezuela, Robert C. Thunell, Daniel M. Sigman, Frank E. Muller-Karger, Yrene Astor, Ramon Varela Sep 2004

Nitrogen Isotope Dynamics Of The Cariaco Basin, Venezuela, Robert C. Thunell, Daniel M. Sigman, Frank E. Muller-Karger, Yrene Astor, Ramon Varela

Marine Science Faculty Publications

We report 15N/14N measurements of water column nitrate and ammonium, sinking particles, and sediments from the Cariaco Basin, an anoxic marine basin off the coast of Venezuela. Water column denitrification occurring in the basin has only a very small isotopic imprint on nitrate in the basin because nitrate consumption is nearly complete in the actively denitrifying water near the oxic/anoxic interface (∼275 m). Being free of a large denitrification signal, the δ15N of shallow thermocline nitrate is ∼3.5‰, significantly lower than the mean deep ocean nitrate δ15N of 5‰. This may be due …

Vertical Wall Loads In A Model Grain Bin With Non-Axial Internal Inserts, Marek Molenda, Michael D. Montross, Jozef Horabik, Sidney A. Thompson

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

A study was conducted to estimate the degree of load asymmetry in a bin with non-axial internal inserts. Internal inserts in the form of an annulus segment were attached to the wall, and their influence on vertical wall loads during centric filling and discharge in a model bin were measured. Wall and floor loads were measured in a corrugated-wall model grain bin with a diameter of 2.44 m and a height of 7.3 m filled with soft red winter wheat to a depth of 6.7 m (height-to-diameter ratio of 2.75). Tests were conducted with inserts that extended circumferentially 30°, 60°, …

Insulin Sensitivity Following Agent Orange Exposure In Vietnam Veterans With High Blood Levels Of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin, Philip A. Kern, Sufyan Said, William G. Jackson Jr., Joel E. Michalek Sep 2004

Insulin Sensitivity Following Agent Orange Exposure In Vietnam Veterans With High Blood Levels Of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin, Philip A. Kern, Sufyan Said, William G. Jackson Jr., Joel E. Michalek

Clinical and Translational Science Faculty Publications

Our objective was to determine whether insulin sensitivity was related to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) in Vietnam veterans exposed to Agent Orange. Air Force veterans of Operation Ranch Hand, the unit responsible for spraying Agent Orange and other herbicides in Vietnam from 1962 to 1971, and comparison veterans who did not spray herbicides were included. We measured insulin sensitivity (SI) using a frequently sampled iv glucose tolerance test in a matched study of 29 matched pairs of veterans and a quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI) based on fasting glucose and insulin in 71 matched pairs. No group differences were …

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Phospholipid scramblase 1 (PLSCR1) is an interferon (IFN)- and growth factor-inducible, calcium-binding protein that either inserts into the plasma membrane or binds DNA in the nucleus depending on its state of palmyitoylation. In certain hematopoietic cells, PLSCR1 is required for normal maturation and terminal differentiation from progenitor cells as regulated by select growth factors, where it promotes recruitment and activation of Src kinases. PLSCR1 is a substrate of Src (and Abl) kinases, and transcription of the PLSCR1 gene is regulated by the same growth factor receptor pathways in which PLSCR1 potentiates afferent signaling. The marked transcriptional upregulation of PLSCR1 by …

Multi-Class Cancer Classification By Semi-Supervised Ellipsoid Artmap With Gene Expression Data, Rui Xu, Donald C. Wunsch, Georgios C. Anagnostopoulos

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

To accurately identify the site of origin of a tumor is crucial to cancer diagnosis and treatment. With the emergence of DNA microarray technologies, constructing gene expression profiles for different cancer types has already become a promising means for cancer classification. In addition to binary classification, the discrimination of multiple tumor types is also important semi-supervised ellipsoid ARTMAP (ssEAM) is a novel neural network architecture rooted in adaptive resonance theory suitable for classification tasks. ssEAM can achieve fast, stable and finite learning and create hyper-ellipsoidal clusters inducing complex nonlinear decision boundaries. Here, we demonstrate the capability of ssEAM to discriminate …

Volume Holographic Recording And Readout For 90-Deg Geometry, Partha P. Banerjee, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Nickolai Kukhtarev, Tatiana Kukhtareva

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

When a prerecorded cross-beam hologram is reconstructed (so-called edge-lit readout) with a uniform plane wave and a point source, the resulting exact solutions reveal Bessel-function-type diffracted beam profiles, which are fundamentally modified under weak propagational diffraction. The case of a profiled beam readout with propagational diffraction may be analyzed using a transfer function approach based on 2-D Laplace transforms. In a second series of investigations, dynamic readout from a cross-beam volume hologram recorded with two orthogonal uniform plane waves is considered for various dependences of the refractive index modulation with intensity. Typically, refractive index profiles that are proportional to the …

Estimating The Degree Of Saturation In Mutant Screens, David D. Pollock, John C. Larkin Sep 2004

Estimating The Degree Of Saturation In Mutant Screens, David D. Pollock, John C. Larkin

Faculty Publications

Large-scale screens for loss-of-function mutants have played a significant role in recent advances in developmental biology and other fields. In such mutant screens, it is desirable to estimate the degree of "saturation" of the screen (i.e., what fraction of the possible target genes has been identified). We applied Bayesian and maximum-likelihood methods for estimating the number of loci remaining undetected in large-scale screens and produced credibility intervals to assess the uncertainty of these estimates. Since different loci may mutate to alleles with detectable phenotypes at different rates, we also incorporated variation in the degree of mutability among genes, using either …

Scarlet Letter Punishment For Juveniles: Rehabilitation Through Humiliation?, Bonnie Mangum Braudway Sep 2004

Scarlet Letter Punishment For Juveniles: Rehabilitation Through Humiliation?, Bonnie Mangum Braudway

Campbell Law Review

This comment begins by discussing the historical development of the juvenile justice system and society's use of shaming penalties. In Section III, it will point out the dangers of using shaming penalties on juvenile offenders. Section IV will explore how the highest courts in two major jurisdictions may handle an appeal from a fictional juvenile sentenced to a shaming punishment. Finally, the comment will discuss possible improvements in the juvenile justice system.
