A Specific Interface Between Integrin Transmembrane Helices And Affinity For Ligand, Bing Hao Luo, Timothy A. Springer, Junichi Takagi

Conformational communication across the plasma membrane between the extracellular and intracellular domains of integrins is beginning to be defined by structural work on both domains. However, the role of the α and β subunit transmembrane domains and the nature of signal transmission through these domains have been elusive. Disulfide bond scanning of the exofacial portions of the integrin αIIβ and β 3transmembrane domains reveals a specific heterodimerization interface in the resting receptor. This interface is lost rather than rearranged upon activation of the receptor by cytoplasmic mutations of the a subunit that mimic physiologic inside-out activation, demonstrating a link between …

The Role Of Dairy Products In The Calcium Intake Of Suburban Adolescents, Simie Bredeweg-Dejager

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine consumption of dairy products by suburban adolescents. This was a secondary analysis of data from a questionnaire administered in late fall of 2003. There were 255 adolescents who completed the questionnaire. Data were examined to estimate calcium intake from dairy products.

There was a significant difference in the amount of calcium adolescents consume from cheese, compared to that supplied by milk (t = -8.502, p = .000). Further analyzing by gender, there was a significant difference between boys and girls intake of milk and cheese. No significant difference was found between boys …

Description Of A Multilevel Cryptic New Species Of Phyciodes (Nymphalidae: Melitaeinae) From The Southern Appalachian Mountains, Ronald R. Gatrelle

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

Phyciodes incognitus is described as a new species from the medium to high elevation hardwood forests of the southern Appalachian Mountains, type locality: Duncan Ridge Road, 3,700 ft., Union County, Georgia, United States. Phyciodes incognitus is verified from four colonies in Union County, Georgia, United States, and Clay and Macon counties, North Carolina, United States. It is projected to range, in suitable habitat, as far north as montane Pennsylvania, United States (indicated by photos). Phyciodes incognitus possesses a unique set of character traits that are virtually identical to both P. tharos and P. cocyta but at differing character …

Il-2 Receptor Signaling Regulates Ets1 Translation In Human Natural Killer Cells, Eric M. Grund

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Natural Killer (NK) cells are critical for protection from cancer and infectious disease. The hypothesis that there is a molecular link between IL-2 receptor signaling and Ets1 was investigated. This hypothesis was based on the correlation between an NK-deficient phenotype generated by gene targeting of the Ets1 transcription factor, IL-2 receptor, IL-2 and IL-15, indicating that each of these proteins is required for the proper development and function of NK cells. The findings presented show that both IL-2 and IL-15 induce a post-transcriptional regulation of Ets1 in NK cells. We have previously described an inexpensive method for modulating the interferometer of an en-face scanning, focus-tracking, three-dimensional optical coherence microscope (OCM). In this OCM design, a reference mirror is mounted on a piezoelectric stack driven at a resonance frequency of about 100 kHz. We perform a partial discrete Fourier transform of the digitally sampled output fringe signal. In the original design, we obtained the amplitude of the backscattered light by summing the powers in the fundamental (1ω) and first harmonic (2ω) of the modulation frequency.
