Lessons From An Evaluation Of Five State Supported Delinquency Prevention Projects, Preston Elrod
Lessons From An Evaluation Of Five State Supported Delinquency Prevention Projects, Preston Elrod
Kentucky Justice and Safety Research Bulletin
Presents an overview of findings from an evaluation of five state supported delinquency prevention projects that was conducted between July 1, 2001 and June 30, 2002. Each of the projects evaluated was funded as part of the Kentucky Community Partnerships to Prevent Delinquency Initiative. This initiative represented a major effort by the Commonwealth through its state Department of Juvenile Justice to assist communities in their efforts to develop local delinquency prevention plans and to fund programs that address local needs in eight geographic areas within the state that were identified by DJJ as having high levels of juvenile crime.
Private Rap Sheet Or Public Record? Reconciling The Disclosure Of Nonconviction Information Under Washington's Public Disclosure And Criminal Records Privacy Acts, Lynette Meachum
Washington Law Review
Division I of the Washington State Court of Appeals misapplies Washington's Criminal Records Privacy Act (CRPA) in determining whether entire files of police investigative information should be available for public review. The plain text and legislative history of the CRPA indicate that the Washington State Legislature intended the CRPA to apply only to the disclosure of criminal history record information, or the data that appears on a subject's criminal rap sheet. Washington courts should interpret the CRPA narrowly, as an exemption to the broad policy of disclosure established by the state's Public Disclosure Act (PDA). This approach would reconcile the …

Court Review: Volume 41, Issue 1 - Recent Evaluative Research On Jury Trial Innovations, B. Michael Dunn, Valerie P. Hans
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
During the past decade, state jury reform commissions, many individual federal and state judges, and jury scholars have advocated the adoption of a variety of innovative trial procedures to assist jurors in trials. These include reforms as prosaic as allowing juror note taking and furnishing jurors with copies of written instructions, through more controversial changes, such as allowing jurors to ask questions of witnesses or permitting them to discuss the case together during breaks in the trial. Accounts of the nature and purpose of the innovations and the pace of change are found in this issue of Court Review1 and …
A Critical Reading And Revision Strategy: Glossing Arguments As Cultural Work, Deborah Minter, Amy M. Goodburn
A Critical Reading And Revision Strategy: Glossing Arguments As Cultural Work, Deborah Minter, Amy M. Goodburn
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Recently compositionists have focused on how writing functions both rhetorically and culturally in the public sphere. Amy Lee (2000), for example, frames her booklength discussion of college composition in an understanding that “writing serves as the means by which we actively construct a self and a world that are, in turn, determined by the very language we have access to” (pp. 45-46; see also Berlin, 1996; Ervin, 1999; Wells, 1996). Such a view places pressure on writing teachers to develop generative activities that extend students’ existing capacities to summarize and analyze arguments. One activity that we’ve found useful is glossing. …

The Politics Of Theater And The Theater Of Law: The Legal And Cultural Implications In Langston Hughes And John Wexley's Dramatizations Of The Scottsboro Trials, Mosby Garland Perrow Iv
Master's Theses
Collectively, the charges and convictions of nine black youths in Scottsboro in 1931 became a symbol of corruption and oppression for those interested in reshaping America's political and legal landscapes. Scottsboro instigated a decade of trials and retrials, two landmark United States Supreme Court opinions, countless dramatic interpretations, and various artistic responses. In particular, Scottsboro, Limited by Langston Hughes and They Shall Not Die by John Wexley were cultural revisions of the trials in 1931 and 1933, respectively. While both works supported the defendants, they were distinguished by their form, production and ultimate statement about the meaning of Scottsboro. These …

Is It Wrong To Commute Death Row? Retribution, Atonement, And Mercy, Stephen P. Garvey
Is It Wrong To Commute Death Row? Retribution, Atonement, And Mercy, Stephen P. Garvey
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
Is it a morally permissible exercise of mercy for a governor to commute the death sentences of everyone on a state's death row, as Governor Ryan recently did in Illinois? I distinguish three different theories of mercy. The first two theories locate mercy within a theory of punishment as retribution. The first theory treats mercy as a means by which to achieve equity. As such, this theory is not really a theory of mercy; it is instead a theory of justice. The second theory treats mercy as a genuine virtue independent of justice. In particular, mercy is understood as an …

Shakespeare Under Arrest: The Construction And Idea Of The Constable In Loves Labour's Lost, Much Ado About Nothing And Measure For Measure, Robert T. Mcgovern
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
"Shakespeare Under Arrest: The Construction and Idea of the Constable in Love Labour's Lost, Much Ado About Nothing, and Measure for Measure"' examines the comedic constables, Dull, Dogberry and Elbow respectively. The constables are constructed from the historical frame work that formed and informed their office. In order to properly construct the comedic constables that appear in these comedies. William Shakespeare had to have a historical frame in order to place them in the proper historical framework before his Elizabethan audiences. This work uses such sources as T.A. Critchley's, A History of Police in England and Wales and Joan R. …

An Examination Of The Associations Between The Locations Of Probationers And Crimes: A City Block-Level Analysis, Stephanie A. Titus
An Examination Of The Associations Between The Locations Of Probationers And Crimes: A City Block-Level Analysis, Stephanie A. Titus
Student Work
This research will use adult probation data from the Douglas County Court Probation Office for 2000 and 2001 to evaluate the relationship between the locations of probationers and their possible effects on the amount of crime on residential city blocks in Omaha, Nebraska. The analyses will relate the probation data to the dependent variables that are based on the Part I Index Crimes obtained from the Omaha Police Department. The research will attempt to evaluate the effects of probationers on the amount of crime on city blocks and compare this with the effects of block-level characteristics and crime on the …
