Mimosa 2004, Jacksonville State University

JSU Yearbooks

The JSU Yearbook Collection spans the years from 1926 to the present. The publication began in 1926 as the Teacola (some volumes spelled "Teacoala") and continued under this title through 1933. The yearbook appears to have ceased printing after that year; the student newspaper took the name Teacola (later changed to the Collegian and finally the Chanticleer) and began publication in 1934. The yearbook started up again in 1947 under the name Mimosa. The Library holds all volume years that were printed: 1926-1933, 1947-1950, 1952-present.

An Administrator’S Perspective Of Trends In Community Mental Health: An Interview With Norman J. Groetzinger, Edward Gumz

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this interview, Norman J. Groetzinger discusses major trends and challenges in community men- tal health since 1975 when he became executive director of the Counseling Center of Lake View, in a Chicago neighborhood. He places these trends in broa der state and federal contexts and illustrates how mental health agencies and the Counseling Center of Lake View, in particular, have responded to these challenges. Many times persons with mental illn ess were better served as a result, but at times the changes ended up complicating how professionals go about doing their work.

Legalistic Individualism: An Alternative Analysis Of Kagan's Adversarial Legalism, Michael Dominic Meuti Jan 2004

Legalistic Individualism: An Alternative Analysis Of Kagan's Adversarial Legalism, Michael Dominic Meuti

UC Law SF International Law Review

An underlying ethos of American law is that an adversarial setting is a prerequisite for proper resolution of a dispute. But is that accurate? Comparative scholars have illustrated the diversity of methods available. In Adversarial Legalism, Robert Kagan considers the merits of these alternative systems. Although the book is not intended as a comprehensive agenda for reform, Kagan's message is clear: our procedures and methods for resolving disputes are a matter of choice, no matter how natural or entrenched they may appear to be. To the extent they do not serve us well, we should exercise our ability to make …

Indigenous Education Research

A longitudinal study conducted by ACER has been monitoring the growth in English literacy and numeracy achievement of a group of 152 Indigenous students in 13 schools through the early years of primary school. Indigenous students' developing English literacy and numeracy skills were assessed at five points over the first three years of school using tasks developed for the ACER Longitudinal Literacy and Numeracy Survey (LLANS). In general, for both the English literacy and for numeracy the achievement of the Indigenous students began at a similar level to that of the main LLANS sample but by the time of the …

The Use Of Pre-Existing Exclusionary Zones As Probationary Conditions For Prostitution Offenses: A Call For The Sincere Application Of Heightened Scrutiny, Gordon Hill Jan 2004

The Use Of Pre-Existing Exclusionary Zones As Probationary Conditions For Prostitution Offenses: A Call For The Sincere Application Of Heightened Scrutiny, Gordon Hill

Seattle University Law Review

In Washington, precedent supports the application of a heightened level of appellate scrutiny to probationary conditions that infringe on fundamental liberties, but this scrutiny is often inconsistently applied and frequently heightened in name alone. This Comment argues that, because the justification for appellate court deference toward the trial courts' creation of probationary conditions has disappeared in the context of SOAP orders, appellate courts faced with such orders should more rigorously examine the trial court decisions. This heightened scrutiny is justified because SOAP orders infringe on the state-recognized right of intrastate travel. Further, based on an examination of the research on …

The Nebraska Supreme Court Lets Its Probation Department Off The Hook In Bartunek V. State, 266 Neb. 454, 666 N.W.2d 435 (2003): "No Duty" As A Non-Response To Violence Against Women And Identifiable Victims, Gretchen S. Obrist

Nebraska Law Review

Because of the negligent supervision of one of its habitually violent intensive supervision probationers, the State of Nebraska allowed DaNell Bartunek to become the victim of a violent, knife-wielding attempted rape by her former boyfriend. This violent sexual assault followed a pattern of abuse and stalking directed at Bartunek, which the State knew about and had the ability to end by adequately controlling its probationer; however, the State did not intervene before the attack. The Nebraska Supreme Court has now decided that the State will not be held accountable for its lack of supervision and that Bartunek must bear the …
