The Effect Of Tourist Theft On Future Travel Decisions, Judith Lynn Holcomb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Past research has shown that theft is a prevalent crime against tourists. This study's purpose was to determine the effects of past incidents of personal theft on tourists' future decisions to travel by analyzing and comparing those who have experienced personal theft to those who heard of such incidents through personal accounts of friends or family. The findings, which were taken from a survey of 215 respondents, revealed that that experiencing personal theft, or knowing of someone who has, is not a deterrent for visiting a destination where the theft occurred. Results also showed that one aspect of theft that …

Public Confidence And The Civil Justice System: What Do We Know About The Issues?, Mary Stratton, Diana Lowe Jan 2004

Public Confidence And The Civil Justice System: What Do We Know About The Issues?, Mary Stratton, Diana Lowe

Canadian Forum on Civil Justice

The Canadian Forum on Civil Justice has been asked to develop a discussion draft concerning issues of public confidence in the civil justice system. We are providing an overview based primarily on a report we have already published: Public Perceptions of the Role of the Canadian Judiciary, which is available on line at http://www.cfcjfcjc.org/publications-cjsp.htm . This should not be considered a full response to all of the points and questions associated with “ Work Plan Development, Recommendation #2” of the Justice Policy Advisory Committee Public Confidence Subcommittee. A full response would require a focused research project, and perhaps should be …

The Bill Of Rights After September 11th: Principles Or Pragmatism?, Christopher E. Smith Jan 2004

The Bill Of Rights After September 11th: Principles Or Pragmatism?, Christopher E. Smith

Duquesne Law Review

Under the traditional rhetoric about the Bill of Rights and its importance for the maintenance of individual liberty and a democratic society, the document and its individual provisions are portrayed as embodying principles that must be respected and preserved in order to prevent the risk of excessive governmental power. By contrast, the assertion that rights can shrink and perhaps even disappear during a war or other emergency portrays a pragmatic view of rights that characterizes them, in some sense, as luxuries that must be set aside during certain historical eras. The article addresses these competing perspectives on the Bill of …
