Interventions To Improve The Reading Skills Of At-Risk Students, Shelley K. Lawyer Jan 2004

Interventions To Improve The Reading Skills Of At-Risk Students, Shelley K. Lawyer

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to improve the reading performance of students at an alternative school located in Fulton County, Georgia. At least 80% of the students who enrolled at the alternative school had reading deficiencies and left with no significant gains in reading as evidenced by school data for the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 school years.

After a careful review of the school’s curriculum, the writer who was relatively new to the school discovered that the teachers were not properly trained to teach reading nor did the school have a systematic reading program. Additionally, there was a lack of parental …

Reading Power At Fews Alternative School: A Program For Improvement, Ennis J. Mccorvey

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation describes an intervention at Fews Alternative School in Montgomery, Alabama. Data from the QRI (Leslie & Caldwell, 1996) showed that the majority of students at Fews had reading problems, as was projected by this researcher. Ninety-two percent of the students recommended to Fews were determined to have a severe reading deficit. In order for these students to experience any measure of success upon returning to their home school, an intervention to improve their reading needed to be implemented. Of the 122 students referred to Fews, 114 of them were determined to have reading problems. The researcher implemented …

Molecular Mapping And Identification Of Soybean Fatty Acid Modifier Quantitative Trait Loci, D. L. Hyten Jr., Vincent R. Pantalone, Arnold M. Saxton, Michael E. Schmidt, Carl E. Sams

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Altering FA content in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] oil for improved functionality is a research goal of many soybean breeders. Several of the genes that alter palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids are modifier genes with small effects, causing these FA traits to act as quantitative traits. The objective of this study was to identify modifier FA quantitative trait loci (QTL) in soybean. A recombinant inbred line population was created from two prominent ancestors of currently avail-able U.S. cultivars (Essex and Williams) and grown in five environments. One hundred simple se-quence repeat markers spaced throughout the genome …

Delivery Of Wireless Ad Hoc Services Using Jini, Sinead Cummins

Theses

Traditionally, networks were planned infrastructures consisting mainly ot desktop machines and servers. As a result of the careful planning carried out prior to their construction, these networks were easily managed and controlled by network administrators. Today these networks are joined by cell phones, PDAs and other handheld devices as well as a host of sensors. This has led to a migration from traditional networks to ad hoc networks.

One way to envisage what this new environment will be like is to imagine what life will be like at the edge of the network. Today the edge mostly consists ot clients …

Shape Up Or Ship Out: Accountability To Third Parties For Patent Ambiguities In Testamentary Documents, Angela M. Vallario Jan 2004

Shape Up Or Ship Out: Accountability To Third Parties For Patent Ambiguities In Testamentary Documents, Angela M. Vallario

All Faculty Scholarship

The attorney's preparation of a testamentary document (hereinafter sometimes referred to as a will or revocable trust) should clearly and accurately reflect the client's last wishes. Although these testamentary documents should reflect the client's intent, they often fall short of accomplishing that goal. There are numerous examples of will and trust construction cases that exhaust tremendous resources in an effort to ascertain the client's wishes or intent. Many of these cases involve the construction of patent and/or latent ambiguities which should have been resolved by appropriate drafting. This article's scope is limited to patent ambiguities caused by the attorney's negligence …

Who Owns The 'First, Rough Draft Of History'? Reconsidering Copyright In News, Eric Easton

All Faculty Scholarship

This article asserts that newspapers' quest for copyright protection was an early step onto a slippery slope toward a property-based, rather than service-based, ethos, and that removing that protection may at the least mark a first, symbolic step back from the abyss. Part I examines the state of contemporary journalism, particularly with respect to the propertization of news. Part II traces the history of copyright protection for news from its origins in censorship to the American copyright regime today, with emphasis on the run up to the 1909 amendments that first codified protection for newspapers. Part III advocates the moral …

A High Precision Radial Velocity Survey Of K Giants, David S. Mitchell Jan 2004

A High Precision Radial Velocity Survey Of K Giants, David S. Mitchell

Physics

Precise radial velocity measurements of stars can provide a powerful tool for both examining the intrinsic atmospheric activity of the star, and testing for the existence of substellar orbital companions. This method has been used to detect the vast majority of known extrasolar planets, as well as probing the asteroseismological characteristics of active stars. This dissertation presents the results of a precise radial velocity survey of 177 bright K giant stars. Six of the stars have data that indicate the presence of planetary or brown dwarf orbital companions. Many others have evidence of nonradial pulsations, and twenty binary stars are …

Learning “The True, The Good And The Beautiful” In Law School: Educating The Twenty-First Century Litigator, Michael T. Colatrella Jr. Jan 2004

Learning “The True, The Good And The Beautiful” In Law School: Educating The Twenty-First Century Litigator, Michael T. Colatrella Jr.

McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles

The author uses the ancient Greek ideal of learning “the true, the good and the beautiful” to form a basis from which legal education can produce lawyers who will be more valuable to their clients and more fulfilled in their twenty-first century careers. To begin, the Article advocates that law schools can foster the Greek ideal of learning “the true” by increasing its focus on “collaborative advocacy” in the core curriculum instead of relying so heavily on “adversarial advocacy” that dominates the required curricula at most law schools. To pursue learning outcomes that are better aligned with the skills needed …

Imaging Genome Abnormalities In Cancer Research, Henry Hq Heng, Joshua B. Stevens, Guo Liu, Steven W. Bremer, Christine J. Ye

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Increasing attention is focusing on chromosomal and genome structure in cancer research due to the fact that genomic instability plays a principal role in cancer initiation, progression and response to chemotherapeutic agents. The integrity of the genome (including structural, behavioral and functional aspects) of normal and cancer cells can be monitored with direct visualization by using a variety of cutting edge molecular cytogenetic technologies that are now available in the field of cancer research. Examples are presented in this review by grouping these methodologies into four categories visualizing different yet closely related major levels of genome structures. An integrated …

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

A 42 year-old male former semi-professional soccer player sustained a right lower extremity popliteal contusion during a soccer game. He was clinically diagnosed with a possible traumatic deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and sent for confirmatory tests. A duplex doppler ultrasound was positive for DVT, and the patient was admitted to hospital for anticoagulation (unfractionated heparin, warfarin). Upon discharge from hospital the patient continued oral warfarin anticoagulation (six months), and the use of compression stockings (nine months). He followed up with his family doctor at regular intervals for serial coagulation measurements, and ultrasound examinations. The patient's only identified major thrombotic …
