Traumatic Deep Vein Thrombosis In A Soccer Player: A Case Study, Paul S. Echlin, Ross Eg Upshur, Douglas B. Mckeag, Harsha P. Jayatilake

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

A 42 year-old male former semi-professional soccer player sustained a right lower extremity popliteal contusion during a soccer game. He was clinically diagnosed with a possible traumatic deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and sent for confirmatory tests. A duplex doppler ultrasound was positive for DVT, and the patient was admitted to hospital for anticoagulation (unfractionated heparin, warfarin). Upon discharge from hospital the patient continued oral warfarin anticoagulation (six months), and the use of compression stockings (nine months). He followed up with his family doctor at regular intervals for serial coagulation measurements, and ultrasound examinations. The patient's only identified major thrombotic …

Developing A Pediatric Oral Health Therapist To Help Address Oral Health Disparities Among Children, David A. Nash

Oral Health Science Faculty Publications

Oral Health in America: A Report of the Surgeon General documented the profound and significant disparities that exist in the oral health of children in the United States. Recently, the country has been issued a National Call to Action to Promote Oral Health, under the leadership of the Office of the Surgeon General. Among the significant factors contributing to the disparities problem is the access to oral health care by disadvantaged populations. There are inadequate numbers of dentists able and willing to treat children, particularly poor and minority children. In the early part of the twentieth century, New Zealand …

The Separation Of Powers And The Public Policy Role Of The State Court In A Routine Case, Harold See Jan 2004

The Separation Of Powers And The Public Policy Role Of The State Court In A Routine Case, Harold See

Law Faculty Scholarship

Grand questions like those of tyranny and anarchy rarely present themselves in royal attire, but, instead, appear in humble garb. I wish to address the constitutional issue of the separation and balance of powers in our tripartite structure of government, but I will address it in humble dress.

The Editor As Biographer, John P. Kaminski Jan 2004

The Editor As Biographer, John P. Kaminski

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Editors are really biographers of sorts almost all the time when editing ~ the papers of their subjects. All meaningful characters who appear in documentary editions are usually identified in footnotes and head notes, biographical directories, introductions, and sometimes even in indexes. No one knows the subject-the person being studied-as well as the documentary editor. Day in and day out editors pore over their documents intently, attempting to make sense of the interrelationships among all the historical participants. As part of their responsibility, editors explain the intricacies and uncertainties in these relationships.

Prescribing The Right Dose Of Peer Review For The Endangered Species Act, J. B. Ruhl Jan 2004

Prescribing The Right Dose Of Peer Review For The Endangered Species Act, J. B. Ruhl

Nebraska Law Review

Environmental law stands out among all fields of law as the one most concerned with the physical world around us. Alas, environmental law seems puny and confused compared to its intended beneficiary, and we have made many mistakes as it has developed. However, the so-called “sound science” movement claims to be able to improve decisionmaking under environmental law. In this article, I focus on scientific-style peer review, one component of sound science, and examine whether, depending on how it is dosed out, it could be counterproductive for environmental law. I examine the quality of peer review using the Endangered Species …

A New Corps Of Discovery For Missouri River Management, Sandra B. Zellmer Jan 2004

A New Corps Of Discovery For Missouri River Management, Sandra B. Zellmer

Nebraska Law Review

On the Missouri River, tensions have run high ever since the Corps of Discovery explored the river’s furthest reaches in the early 1800s, with conflict between navigation and ecological protection in the Missouri River basin. Upper basin states are pitted against lower basin states, and both have had their run-ins with federal agencies. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stands at the vortex of the controversy while the states as well as environmental and commercial associations demand contradictory and even mutually exclusive responses in river operations. The objective of this article is two-fold: first, to show that the Master Manual …

Out-Of-Priority Water Use: Adding Flexibility To The Water Appropriation System, Lawrence J. Macdonnell Jan 2004

Out-Of-Priority Water Use: Adding Flexibility To The Water Appropriation System, Lawrence J. Macdonnell

Nebraska Law Review

The concept of “priority”—an objective basis for allocating a limited resource—is fundamental to the prior appropriation doctrine. Since Irwin v. Phillips courts in the western states have used the principle of first-in-time, first-in-right to determine respective rights of competing appropriators from the same source of water. Priority is, however, a purely temporal basis for establishing rights, and the historical function of prior appropriation law—to make an initial allocation of the West’s water resources among potentially competing claimants—has been largely completed. Thus, those wanting to make a new use requiring water must look to those already holding water allocations. Water law …

Multiple-Use Water Resources Development Versus Natural River Functions: Can The Wsra And Wrda Coexist On The Missouri River?, John H. Davidson Jan 2004

Multiple-Use Water Resources Development Versus Natural River Functions: Can The Wsra And Wrda Coexist On The Missouri River?, John H. Davidson

Nebraska Law Review

In 1986 the United States Congress designated the Upper Mississippi River System as both a “nationally significant ecosystem” and a “nationally significant commercial navigation system.” This ambivalence in river legislation results in Congress investing heavily in the engineering of a river while also declaring its desire to protect, in some way, the same river’s natural features. The conflicts inherent in the water resources development process have been made more intense by the Clean Water Act, the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, and the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Congress frequently authorizes development projects and protection projects on the same …

The Republican River Dispute: An Analysis Of The Parties' Compact Interpretation And Final Settlement Stipulation, Aaron M. Popelka Jan 2004

The Republican River Dispute: An Analysis Of The Parties' Compact Interpretation And Final Settlement Stipulation, Aaron M. Popelka

Nebraska Law Review

With the arrival of the twentieth century, technology allowed surface water supplies to be used by communities, industry, and agriculture in greater quantities, and be used farther away from the water’s source. In addition, public works undertaken in the wake of the Great Depression in the 1930s allowed states to impound vast quantities of water. With increased consumption and impounding of water, interstate allocations of shared surface water needed to be regulated, and one of the prevalent means of accomplishing this task was the creation of interstate compacts. States began negotiating these water compacts among themselves to set forth specific …

Jesus' Welcome Centers Our Ministry, Richard Fabian Jan 2004

Jesus' Welcome Centers Our Ministry, Richard Fabian

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

Americans are 60% churchgoers today, just as in colonial times and in every century since. But our times are different. Today everything stands in question. In San Francisco and the western half of Washington State, 90% of residents tell census takers they have no religious identity whatever. Moreover, today America offers many faith options: Buddhism, New Age Spirituality, Islam, and countless fundamentalist cults. Our own mainline church services increasingly resemble fourth-century churches, filling up with people with no known faith commitment. That describes not only our visitors, but longtime church members as well.

Opportunities In The Broadcast News Media: A Case Study In Gender Equity, Derek R. Lumsden Jan 2004

Opportunities In The Broadcast News Media: A Case Study In Gender Equity, Derek R. Lumsden

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

When one thinks of gender equity, some people would tend to get a picture of women crusading for rights, burning their bras and men in effigy, and complaining about the unfairness of life. However, this paper deals with the silent crusade towards women's right in the broadcast news industry. It revolves around a case study done in a small Midwestern town that shows how 'liberal' ideas can be forwarded in a 'conservative' environment, especially in regards to the promotion and equity of women in the broadcast news industry.
