Examining The First-Year Three-Contact-Hour Seminar: Implications For Faculty Development., Melanie Baker Rogers Jan 2004

Examining The First-Year Three-Contact-Hour Seminar: Implications For Faculty Development., Melanie Baker Rogers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Calls for reform in higher education have required many colleges and universities to redesign their undergraduate curricula. This decision was based on national reports that pointed out college graduates did not possess the academic and critical thinking skills needed to be successful in college and beyond. In conjunction with this curricular reform, was the need for a paradigm shift from instruction to learning, which required instructors to utilize teaching and learning strategies that actively involved undergraduate students in the learning process and would elicit the academic and critical thinking skills undergraduate students need to be successful. These strategies need to …

A Multi-Level Approach To Individual Readiness To Adopt Entreprise Resource Planning Software, David Edouard Desplaces

Open Access Dissertations

This study seeks to expand our understanding of individual readiness to change and its antecedents. Individual readiness to change is explored and measured as a three dimensional attitudinal construct. Antecedents to change are explored including both the objective and subjective context of change. Participants were faculty members at a university in the northeast part of the U.S. who were scheduled to use E-Campus, an internet-based portal application designed to assist them in managing their courses including grade submission, class rosters and access to student specific information. Data were collected using a mailed questionnaire. The results indicated no relationship between objective …

The Birth Of Bizdames: A Rupture In The Conversation, Engaging The Body In Decision-Making, Kathleen Mallon Jan 2004

The Birth Of Bizdames: A Rupture In The Conversation, Engaging The Body In Decision-Making, Kathleen Mallon

Open Access Dissertations

Organizational studies consistently find that managers spend more time talking than any other activity (Mintzberg, 1973; Simon, 1945), that strategic decisions are developed and enacted through interactive talk (Perlow, 2003; Shaw, 2002), and that a diversity of perspectives has a positive effect on decision-making and organizational performance (Agyris, 1977). Conversely, the evidence suggests that cultures that perpetuate silence are less effective (Bourgeois, 1985; Enz & Schwenk, 1991; Morrison & Milliken, 2000; Ryan & Oestreich, 1991). Thus, knowledge about the inter-relationship of the micro-mechanisms of silence and talk and their effect on organizational performance is critical to management theory and practice …

Gender Moderation Of The Relationship Between Hours In Role And Work-Family Conflict: A Test Of Competing Theories, Lucas D. Gray Jan 2004

Gender Moderation Of The Relationship Between Hours In Role And Work-Family Conflict: A Test Of Competing Theories, Lucas D. Gray

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Americans' roles as family members and workers have been clashing in recent history. The past fifteen years have expanded the work-family conflict (WFC) literature considerably. Gutek, Searle, and Klepa (1991) proposed and tested two views of how WFC may be affected by sex. The rational view predicts that WFC originates in the role that the person spends more time in. However, the gender role view predicts that the more time a person spends outside traditional gender roles increases conflict. Thus, the two theories make incompatible predictions regarding the relationship between time spent in a role, gender and WFC. The current …

Destabilization Rights: How Public Law Litigation Succeeds, Charles F. Sabel, William H. Simon Jan 2004

Destabilization Rights: How Public Law Litigation Succeeds, Charles F. Sabel, William H. Simon

Faculty Scholarship

"Public law litigation" – civil rights advocacy seeking to restructure public agencies - has changed course over the last three decades. It has moved away from remedial intervention modeled on command-and-control bureaucracy toward a kind of intervention that can be called "experimentalist." Instead of top-down, fixed-rule regimes, the experimentalist approach emphasizes ongoing stakeholder negotiation, continuously revised performance measures, and transparency. Experimentalism is evident in all the principal areas of public law intervention – schools, mental health institutions, prisons, police, and public housing. This development has been substantially unanticipated and unnoticed by both advocates and critics of public law litigation. In …

Measuring The Performance Of Teams Formulated According To Problem Solving Style Among Undergraduate Students, Sophia K. Scott Jan 2004

Measuring The Performance Of Teams Formulated According To Problem Solving Style Among Undergraduate Students, Sophia K. Scott

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Change is ubiquitous and needs to be managed. Change can be managed though problem-solving. Teams are the vehicle that many organizations use to accomplish problem-solving. Adaption-Innovation theory stipulates that people differ in how they approach problem-solving, which is called style. This study attempted to assess whether understanding problem-solving style affected the performance of teams. The method used in this study was an experiment utilizing the Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory (KAI) to measure problem-solving style and a puzzle to measure performance of teams. The independent variable was a lesson on understanding KAI. A total of 312 participants in 44 teams were included …

The Psychological Contract Of Multiple Agency Relationships: Understanding The Attitudes And Behaviors Of Contractors, Cynthia J. Maahs Jan 2004

The Psychological Contract Of Multiple Agency Relationships: Understanding The Attitudes And Behaviors Of Contractors, Cynthia J. Maahs

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Previous research offers inconsistent findings with respect to attitude and behavior differences for contingent and permanent workers. The current study proposes the psychological contract as an explanatory framework for understanding differences between contractors and regular employees. The hypotheses examined attitudinal and behavioral measures: organizational commitment, job satisfaction, intent to quit, job performance, and organizational citizenship behaviors. The two components of the psychological contract (relational vs. transactional) were thought to impact differentially the outcome measures. Approximately 650 employees in a technology contracting organization completed an on-line survey designed to test the hypotheses. The two-factor structure of psychological contract was confirmed and …

Creating Individual Behavior Change Through 360-Degree Feedback: A Development Pipeline Perspective, Victoria Cole Stage Jan 2004

Creating Individual Behavior Change Through 360-Degree Feedback: A Development Pipeline Perspective, Victoria Cole Stage

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Ensuring that individuals develop new and more productive behaviors on the job is a challenge for many organizations and a focus of time, effort, and energy spent on programs to facilitate this change. This research was an effort to validate and utilize a framework for understanding how efforts toward individual development are restricted. To do this, I used a new 360-degree feedback instrument called “Time 2 Change” that measures self, manager, direct report, and peer/colleague perceptions of change in the individual. This instrument also measures the individual's perceptions of development enablers, in a framework called a Development Pipeline. As a …

Targeting Workplace Harassment In Quebec: On Exporting A New Legislative Agenda, Debra Parkes Jan 2004

Targeting Workplace Harassment In Quebec: On Exporting A New Legislative Agenda, Debra Parkes

All Faculty Publications

For over twenty-five years, Canadian law has prohibited sexual harassment and other forms of discriminatory harassment (meaning harassment that relates to the target's race, disability, sexual orientation, or other similar characteristic). Recent amendments to the Quebec Labour Standards Act aim to fill a gap in the law that currently provides a remedy (under human rights legislation) for discriminatory harassment, but not for harassment that is not obviously linked to the target's membership in a protected class such as that based on race, sex, religion, disability or sexual orientation. This paper takes a preliminary look at this new legislative initiative. It …

Organizational Forming In Amodern Times: Reinserting The Dynamic Into The Organizational, Paul Donnelly Jan 2004

Organizational Forming In Amodern Times: Reinserting The Dynamic Into The Organizational, Paul Donnelly

Conference papers

While there is an obvious concern that “new organizational forms” are appearing, and despite the topic receiving increased attention, scholars, as yet, have been unable to theorize, grasp or account for these new forms adequately. In continuing to look for the ‘new’ with ‘old’ lenses, we are seeing neither real departure from Weberian conceptualizations other than oppositional approaches still in search of an essential entity, nor much consideration given to the possibility that the paradigmatic approach to form is also part of the problem. In light of this, I posit that thinking within a modernist epistemological framework has served to …

Perceived Likelihood Of Activity-Based Costing To Succeed In A University Setting, Nazmi Jarrar

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The study provides exploratory empirical evidence on the likelihood of Activity Based Costing (ABC) to succeed in a university setting and the association of this success with specific behavioral implementation factors. The study examined perceptions of Edith Cowan University's ABC users and preparers of the likelihood of the system to succeed in the University and their perceptions of eleven behavioral implementation factors identified by previous studies to have significant association with ABC implementation success. Results were analyzed so as to determine the significance of the correlation between the users' and preparers' perceptions of each of the eleven factors and their …

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Organizational Culture And Occupational Stress: Perceptions Of Employees Following A Merger, Brent J. Pasula Jan 2004

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Organizational Culture And Occupational Stress: Perceptions Of Employees Following A Merger, Brent J. Pasula

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

There is a growing body of literature regarding the physiological and psychological effects of stress resulting from the increasing concern about occupational stress. This study attempts to fill an identified gap within epidemiologic literature by examining whether organizational culture has an influence on the level of occupational stress, perceived by employees, following the merger of their company with another. To explore this relationship, five research questions were examined using a data gathering process that consisted of a self-administered survey to measure psychosomatic strain, stress-inducing work demands, and organizational culture.

North Korean Invasion And Chinese Intervention In Korea: Failures Of Intelligence, Robert A.Ii Culp Jan 2004

North Korean Invasion And Chinese Intervention In Korea: Failures Of Intelligence, Robert A.Ii Culp

LSU Master's Theses

The America intelligence community in 1950, unprepared to perform its missions, failed to provide adequate indications and warning to U.S. national leaders and to the Commander, Far East Command (FEC), about the North Korean invasion of South Korea and Red Chinese intervention in the Korean War. Post-World War II policies that reduced the size of the military, cut systems and training, and reorganized intelligence services are responsible for that failure. Training deficiencies meant that intelligence soldiers deployed to Korea without required skills. The military trained analysts to assess enemy capabilities rather than intentions, contributing to poor predictive analysis. Shortages of …

Technology Management In The Effective Implementation Of Change, Molly B. Kearns Jan 2004

Technology Management In The Effective Implementation Of Change, Molly B. Kearns

Theses

Organizational fitness is often achieved by making changes in business operations. These changes frequently involve the use of a new technology. The effective implementation of change is achieved by examining the benefits and challenges of technology management when making decisions. Important elements for consideration in technology management are technology evaluation, integration, planning, implementation, training, and change. A solution is proposed to combine and encompass all the elements of technology management to allow for the positive aspects and avoid the negative aspects of change implementation. The tool consists of principles to be addressed for each element.

Use Of System Dynamics And Easel For Simulation Of The Software Development Process, Alicia Strupp Jan 2004

Use Of System Dynamics And Easel For Simulation Of The Software Development Process, Alicia Strupp

Theses

Team software development is a complex and mostly unpredictable process and is characterized by inefficient use of staff and calendar resources. Given the magnitude of software development costs, a deeper understanding of the process may suggest ways to improve resource utilization. Simulation modeling is a useful approach to study the dynamics of complex systems. System dynamics characterizes systems as collections of interacting, non-linear feedback loops. The foundations of system dynamics were developed at MIT in the early 1950s. Since that time, system dynamics has been applied to a large number of complex system domains. In the early 1980s, the system …

An Intervention Model To Improve Overall Learning For Rural At-Risk Kindergartners, Vivian S. Burke Jan 2004

An Intervention Model To Improve Overall Learning For Rural At-Risk Kindergartners, Vivian S. Burke

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation investigated whether at-risk kindergarten students who were taught with the 5 standards of effective pedagogy over an 8-month period would score higher on achievement measures. The 5 pedagogy standards are (a) joint productive activity, (b) language and literacy development, (c) meaning making, (d) complex thinking, and (e) instructional conversation. These standards emerged from principles of practice that have proven successful with majority and minority at-risk students in a variety of teaching and learning settings over several decades (R. G. Tharpe, 1988).

The researcher developed indicators for each standard, revealing action components of the standards and their functions …

This applied dissertation was designed to improve the implementation of early intervention therapy services in natural environments. Active caregiver participation during therapy is vital to the success of early intervention. However, the caregivers of infants and toddlers with developmental delays who were receiving early intervention therapy from an agency that served three counties in the southeastern United States were not actively participating in the implementation of the Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs).

In order to increase the level of active caregiver participation during therapy sessions, six solution strategies were implemented. The researcher provided information to the caregivers by creating a …

Affect Of Increasing Team-Planning Time And Improving Team Classroom Proximity On Student Achievement, John Deuber John Deuber

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to increase the amount of team-planning time and classroom proximity provided to teaching teams at 1 middle school. The amount of time provided within the school day to each team for team planning was inadequate to meet the needs of effective teams. Additionally, teachers had been assigned to classrooms with little concern for team member proximity.

Student achievement as measured by the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills 5, a nationally recognized standardized test, had shown a slight downward trend for 3 preceding years. The interventions were meant to address and correct this problem. Teachers completed …
