Characterization Of A Catechol-Type Siderophore And The Detection Of A Possible Outer Membrane Receptor Protein From Rhizobium Leguminosarum Strain Iari 312., Brianne Lee Clark Aug 2004

Characterization Of A Catechol-Type Siderophore And The Detection Of A Possible Outer Membrane Receptor Protein From Rhizobium Leguminosarum Strain Iari 312., Brianne Lee Clark

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many gram-negative bacteria produce and secrete siderophores under iron-deficient conditions. Siderophores are low molecular weight compounds (600-1500 Daltons), which chelate ferric iron with an extremely high affinity, and the complex is actively transported across the outer and inner membranes of gram-negative bacteria. There are two main classes of siderophores: catechol and hydroxamate. Catechol-type siderophores chelate ferric iron via hydroxyl groups, and hydroxamate-type siderophores chelate ferric iron via a carbonyl group with an adjacent nitrogen. Rhizobia fix atmospheric nitrogen symbiotically in leguminous plants using the iron-containing enzyme nitrogenase. To satisfy their iron requirements, many rhizobia are known to produce siderophores. Rhizobium …

An Economic Analysis Of The Market For Alaska Wild Salmon Protein Concentrate In China, Pei Xu Aug 2004

An Economic Analysis Of The Market For Alaska Wild Salmon Protein Concentrate In China, Pei Xu

Economics

The Alaska wild salmon industry has been in economic turmoil for many years. Plagued by increased production of farmed salmon, wholesale and ex-vessel prices for nearly all Alaska wild salmon species and products are at all time lows. The incentive to harvest the flesh of the lower-valued wild salmon species, such as the Alaskan pink and chum salmon, have led to discard problems. There are no seafood products currently made from the late season roe-stripped carcasses and the meat cannot be readily sold due to its perceived poor quality. The fishers and the processors are now faced with a problem …

Development, Growth, And Egg Production Of Centropages Abdominalis And Neocalanus Flemingeri From The Eastern Subarctic Pacific, Laura Michelle Slater Aug 2004

Development, Growth, And Egg Production Of Centropages Abdominalis And Neocalanus Flemingeri From The Eastern Subarctic Pacific, Laura Michelle Slater

Marine Biology

Copepods dominate oceanic mesozooplankton in terms of abundance and biomass thus contributing a significant source of secondary production. I determined development, growth, and egg production of Centropages abdominalis and Neocalanus flemingeri at temperatures representative of the northern Gulf of Alaska in spring. Median development times from eggs to adults were 42 and 59 days for C. abdominalis at 5 and 7°C, respectively, and 117 days from eggs to copepodite stage five for N. flemingeri at 5°C. Average copepodite growth rates were 0.08 and 0.17 d⁻¹ for C. abdominalis at 5 and 7°C, respectively, and 0.15 d⁻¹ for N. flemingeri at …

Growth And Nutritional Development Of Reindeer (Rangifer Tarandus) And Muskoxen (Ovibos Moschatus), Katrina K. Knott Aug 2004

Growth And Nutritional Development Of Reindeer (Rangifer Tarandus) And Muskoxen (Ovibos Moschatus), Katrina K. Knott

Biological Sciences

Young ruminants must grow and develop digestive function during brief summers in the Arctic. I examined growth and development of nutritional organs in reindeer and muskoxen as neonates (1 d), during transition from milk to forage (30-60 d) and at maturity. Reindeer and muskoxen gave birth to relatively smaller offspring than ruminants from more temperate regions. Costs of small birth mass are likely offset in neonates by an increase of thyroid hormones to enhance thermogenesis and hepatic reserves that provide additional nutrients during early development. Body mass gains during the neonatal period (1-30 d) were associated with well-developed abomasa that …

Effects Of Outbreeding On Embryonic Development Timing Of Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha), Ivan Alan Wang Aug 2004

Effects Of Outbreeding On Embryonic Development Timing Of Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha), Ivan Alan Wang

Fisheries

I studied the effects of outbreeding on embryonic development timing of pink salmon. I used standardized development stages and germ ring opening measurements to compare the variation of development at epiboly for odd- and even-broodyear F₂ hybrids. Analyses of timing of development at epiboly showed no effects of outbreeding depression, but did show a maternal effect for both crosses and backcrosses; and backcross families differed between replicates. These observations suggest that experimental designs lacking consideration of maternal effects or testing for replicate container effects in early salmon development studies may be flawed. I also compared the variation of hatching times …

Servant Leadership In Healthcare, Sean J. Porter Aug 2004

Servant Leadership In Healthcare, Sean J. Porter

Theses and Graduate Projects

America's $1.4 trillion healthcare industry is poised to grow rapidly in volumes, revenues and expenditures. Rising healthcare expenditures signal a return of medical inflation, with double-digit premium increases for employers and consumers, and an increased threat of more government regulation and healthcare reforms. In addition, the post 9/11 economic recession and layoffs have increased the number of uninsured patients. While hospitals are investing in expansion initiatives, there is a continued workforce shortage, particularly in nursing. According to Russell Coile, Jr. (1999), healthcare is in crisis.

More focus is being placed on leadership to empower employees and create positive patient care …

Variance In Percent Body Fat Between And Within Families As Measured By Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry, Laurel Anne Kelsey

Theses and Dissertations

Objective: To determine the variance in percent body fat between and within families as measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Methods: Percent body fat (%BF) assessed in 95 females, 120 males (included 54 sets of biological siblings) using DXA. Physical activity questionnaire used to assess current physical activity habits in each participant. Results: Variance in %BF between and within families is similar. Amount of television viewing and levels of physical activity can affect %BF. Discussion: A model such as the one derived in this study can be a useful tool in intervention programs implemented to decrease obesity.

Evaluating Work: Enforcing Occupational Safety And Health Standards In The United States, Canada And Sweden, Daniel B. Klaff Aug 2004

Evaluating Work: Enforcing Occupational Safety And Health Standards In The United States, Canada And Sweden, Daniel B. Klaff

ExpressO

The United States’ occupational safety and health enforcement system is breaking down. Klaff argues that much of this breakdown has to do with a fundamental lack of worker participation in the United States’ safety and health system. Klaff makes his case by comparing and contrasting the history and enforcement schemes of the United States, Canada, and Sweden. After arguing for economic rights as human rights, Klaff concludes by offering a set of recommendations for the United States’ occupational safety and health system based upon his value-centered analysis.

Methanogenic Generation Of Biogas From Synthesis-Gas Fermentation Wastewaters, Katherine Ann Taconi Aug 2004

Methanogenic Generation Of Biogas From Synthesis-Gas Fermentation Wastewaters, Katherine Ann Taconi

Theses and Dissertations

As societies around the world become increasingly more dependent on fossil based fuels, the need to investigate alternative fuel sources becomes more pressing. Renewable, biomass-based carbon sources obtained from the biosphere can be gasified to produce synthesis gas, which can in turn be fermented to produce fuel-grade ethanol. A byproduct of ethanol production via fermentation is acetic acid. An optimized ethanol fermentation process should produce a wastewater stream containing less than 2 g/L of acetic acid. This is not enough acid to justify recovery of the acid; however it is a high enough concentration that treatment of the stream is …

In-Situ Lead Immobilization Using Phosphate Based Binders, Jason Ellis Darnell Aug 2004

In-Situ Lead Immobilization Using Phosphate Based Binders, Jason Ellis Darnell

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum phosphate treatment method to stabilize lead contaminated soil from a firing range. Seven different phosphate sources at five different concentrations were added to soil collected from a firing range on a military base. A series of tests were performed to determine a generic phosphate treatment method. The selected generic phosphate treatment was compared to an untreated control soil sample and to four commercially available treatments provided by invited vendors selected from industry. The four vendors processes, control, and generic treatments were subjected to a series of physical and chemical tests …

The Effects Of Shear Deformation On Chondrogenesis, Kori Vasser Brabham Aug 2004

The Effects Of Shear Deformation On Chondrogenesis, Kori Vasser Brabham

Theses and Dissertations

Due to mechanical loading, cartilage experiences distortional change, volumetric change, and fluid flow. Research has shown cells to be responsive to unconfined compression, a load that produces all three conditions. To isolate the factor(s) responsible for chondrogenesis, the first goal of this research was to design and implement a device for the application of shear deformation to cells. Secondly, using this device, Stage 23/24 chick limb bud cells were suspended in 2% alginate and subjected to 20% shear deformation at 1 Hz. for two hours daily for three days. Gene expression, DNA content, sGAG content, and cartilage nodule formation were …

The Alley Behind First Street, Northeast: Criminal Abortion In The Nation's Capital 1873-1973, Douglas R. Miller

ExpressO

The thirtieth anniversary of Roe v. Wade found our country no less divided over abortion than it was during the era of its prohibition. As the bitter struggle over judicial nominations throughout the present administration suggests, abortion’s future remains at the forefront of American political debate.

In their push for increased limitations, abortion opponents generally overlook the historical consequences of prohibition. Abortion rights proponents often invoke history in their opposition to new restrictions, but tend to do so superficially, and only in a manner that supports their position.

This article attempts a more complex study of criminal abortion’s legal and …

Effect Of Photoperiodicity On Co2 Fixation By Chlorella Vulgaris Buitenzorg In Bubble Column Photobioreactor For Food Supplement Production, Anondho Wijanarko, Dianursanti Dianursanti, Arief Budi Witarto, Roekmijati Widaningroem Soemantojo

Makara Journal of Technology

To reduce the level of CO2 content in air, effort on converting CO2 to useful products is required. One of the alternatives includes CO2 fixation to produce biomass using Chlorella vulgaris Buitenzorg. Chlorella vulgaris Buitenzorg is applied for production of food supplement. Chlorella vulgaris Buitenzorg is also easy to handle due to its superior adaptation. Currently, Chlorella vulgaris Buitenzorg has been analyzed by some experts for its cellular composition, its ability to produce high quality biomass and the content of essential nutrition. A series of experiments was conducted by culturing Chlorella vulgaris Buitenzorg using Beneck medium in bubbling column photobioreactor. …
