The Impact Of Health Information And Women In The Work Force On Aggregate Meat Demand, Christiane Schroeter, Ken Foster
The Impact Of Health Information And Women In The Work Force On Aggregate Meat Demand, Christiane Schroeter, Ken Foster
Agribusiness
Over the past few decades, U.S. meat consumption patterns have changed. Changes in food consumption patterns can be the result of changing demographic characteristics, changing lifestyles, increasing health awareness, and nutritional concerns. Prior research suggests that these factors have significant influence on the demand for meat (Capps and Schmitz; Kinnucan, Hsia, and Jackson). The recent interest in low carbohydrate diets and the association with increased red meat consumption is an anecdotal example of this phenomenon.

Over the past few decades, U.S. meat consumption patterns have changed. Figure 1 shows the U.S. per-capita meat consumption from 1970-1999. Consumers have increased their total meat consumption by 9.3% from 1970 to 1999, however, the composition of the meat consumption changed as well. While beef consumption has consistently decreased since 1985 - that of poultry and fish have increased. Per capita pork consumption has not changed on average from the 1970’s to the 1990’s.

This paper formulates and defends a version of moral vegetarianism. Since eating animals is not causally connected to their death, I begin with analyzing the moral status of consumer actions that do not, taken on their own, harm animals (I). I then formulate a version of moral vegetarianism (II). Three different opponents of moral vegetarianism are then distinguished and criticized (III-VI). I then take up the argument according to which eating animals benefits them (VII). I close with the question of the desirability of collective vegetarianism from the point of view of animals.
Cloning And Sequencing Of Bovine Na+/K= Atpase Α-1 Sub-Unit, Srikanth Aakula
Cloning And Sequencing Of Bovine Na+/K= Atpase Α-1 Sub-Unit, Srikanth Aakula
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The major focus of this project was cloning and sequencing the α-1 sub-unit of Na+/K+-ATase gene in bovine corneal endothelium. The Na+/K+-ATase, also called the Na+ pump, is a crucial transmembrane protein. By transporting water and ions from and through the cornea into the aqueous humor, it is responsible for maintenance of structural integrity, corneal hydration and thereby transparency of the cornea. The Na+ pump is characterized by a complex molecular heterogeneity that results from differential association of multiple isoforms of both a (the catalytic) and [3 (glycoprotein) sub-units. In the corneal endothelium, α-1 α-2, β-l and β-2 sub-units are …

Effect Of Ficus Tuerckheimii Diameter, Host Tree Presence, Habitat And Orientation On Epiphyte Diversity And Abundance, August 2004, Christina Tierno
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Ficus tuerckheimii, a species of strangler fig found in the cloud forests of Monteverde, is a keystone species for a multitude of animals as well as epiphytic plants. In the study, epiphyte richness on Ficus tuerckheimii was analyzed in order to determine if epiphyte species richness was related to elevation, circumference, hollowness, location, percent of area covered by epiphytes and compass point orientation. Thirty Ficus tuerckheimii were studied in pasture and forest areas between 1400-1500 m elevations. A significant relationship was found between epiphyte species richness in forest habitats versus open (Mann Whitney U=28, P=.0083). Significance was also found between …

Dollars And Death, Cass R. Sunstein, Eric A. Posner
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
Administrative regulations and tort law both impose controls on activities that cause mortality risks, but they do so in puzzlingly different ways. Under a relatively new and still-controversial procedure, administrative regulations rely on a fixed value of a statistical life representing the hedonic loss from death. Under much older law, tort law in most states excludes hedonic loss from the calculation of damages, and instead focuses on loss of income, which regulatory policy ignores. Regulatory policy also disregards losses to dependents; tort law usually allows dependents to recover for loss of support. Regulatory policy generally treats the loss of the …

Plasma Copper And Zinc Levels In Chronic Viral Hepatitis, Iclal Meram, Fatma Sirmatel, Sibel Ahi, Mehmet Tarakcioglu
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: The relationship between chronic hepatitis and trace metals has not been understood clearly. Copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) are essential trace elements for several metabolic processes. Overload or deficiency of these elements can lead to metabolic disorders and some other diseases. In this study, we aimed to examine the relationship between chronic hepatitis and plasma Cu and Zn levels. METHODS: Forty-three patients with chronic viral hepatitis (CVH) and 30 healthy controls were included in this study. The patients were consecutively admitted to the Department of Infectious Disease and Clinical Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, Gaziantep University, Turkey, between January 2000 …

Speech/Language And Social Behavior Performance As Predictors Of Literacy Acquisition In Children With Fetal Alcohol Syndrome/Fetal Alcohol Effects, Kristen Ann Runge
Theses and Dissertations
This study was a review of existing case files and focused on the struggles of one particular segment of the special needs student population and the challenges that educators face as they attempt to engage them in meaningful learning experiences. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome/Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAS/FAE) are completely preventable; yet, their presence in classrooms remains high and bears profound implications for educators. This study examined the specific relationships between FAS/FAE and literacy acquisition in children. Specific variables of children with FAS/FAE were considered. They included IQ, speech/language development, and social behavior performance.
Hypotheses guiding this study were the following:
- Evidence …
Intercultural Knowledge And Skills In Social Service Work With Refugees: Perspectives From Providers And Recipients Of Service, Katherine Amy Phillips
Intercultural Knowledge And Skills In Social Service Work With Refugees: Perspectives From Providers And Recipients Of Service, Katherine Amy Phillips
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative research study examined how social service providers and refugee recipients of public social services in a small city in an upper mid-western state described the intercultural knowledge and skills they felt were necessary for effective provision of services to refugees. The study sought to add to a body of knowledge related to the concept of “cultural competence,” a concept that has received increasing attention in human service fields over the past twenty years. Lum (1999) describes cultural competence as an outcome goal “related to the master of cultural awareness, knowledge acquisition, skill development, and inductive learning” (p. 12). …
The Life-Long Diminution Of Anxiety Response As A Consequence Of Reproductive Experience, Ilan M. Mcnamara
The Life-Long Diminution Of Anxiety Response As A Consequence Of Reproductive Experience, Ilan M. Mcnamara
Master's Theses
Reproductive experience (RE), associated with hormonal fluctuations and enriching environmental stimuli, enhances spatial memory and blunts responses to stress/anxiety. Whereas stress reductions occur during lactation, the persistence of the RE-anxiolytic effects is unclear; and little research has focused on the HP A axis, amygdala, and other anxietyrelated areas. Using an elevated plus maze (EPM), we examined anxiety in nulliparous (NP), primiparous (PP), and multiparous (MP) females (zero, one, or two litters, respectively) at 6, 10, 14, 18, and 22 months of age. Brains were subsequently analyzed for neurodegeneration in dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN). RE significantly dampened anxiety (defined by time …

Objective: To give academic researchers, government officials, and industry scientists an opportunity to assess the state of pediatric psychopharmacology and identify challenges facing professionals in the field.
Method: Increased federal spending and the introduction of pediatric exclusivity led to large increases in pediatric psychopharmacology research in the 1990s. Despite the increase in research, concerns exist about methods and incentives for making new medications available for use in pediatric psychiatric disorders. In recognition of these concerns, the Duke Clinical Research Institute held a roundtable in September 2004. Participants from the National Institutes of Health, regulatory agencies, academia, and the pharmaceutical industry …

Non-Specific Stress Indicators And Growth Efficiency In The Archaic And Mississippian At The Perry Site (1 Lu25) In Northwestern Alabama, Robin Wiebe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Porotic hyperostosis, linear enamel hypoplasias and adult stature are all nonspecific indicators of stress. When studied together, they provide an understanding of the long-term survival of periods of stress occurring in varying stages of the life of an individual. Because the Perry Site contains both Archaic and Mississippian components, it provides a unique opportunity to examine not only how these indicators interact, but also how interactions may change across time and subsistence base. Most studies show increases in frequency of porotic hyperostosis and linear enamel hypoplasias and a decrease in adult stature with a shift to agriculture. The Perry material …
The Effectiveness Of The Mountain Robin (Turdus Plebejus) As A Seed Disperser In The Monteverde Area, August 2004, Sean Brady
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Quantitative and qualitative factors are important in determining the effectiveness with which bird species disperse seeds. This study examined several factors that may influence the quantitative component of dispersal in the mountain robin. Regurgitation times of three common fruits in the area were examined. Additionally, the size at which seeds transition from being regurgitated to defecated was studied. Results show that regurgitation times between these three fruits do not differ significantly. However, there was a significant difference in the size of regurgitated (X = 5.97 mm ± 2.17 mm) and defecated seeds (X = 4.25 mm ± 2.55 mm) (t …
