Fundamentals Of Community Health Centers, Jessamyn Taylor Aug 2004

Fundamentals Of Community Health Centers, Jessamyn Taylor

National Health Policy Forum

This background paper examines the dominant model of federal grant funding for primary care in the health care safety net: the community health center. It describes the history of the health center program and highlights key policy issues influencing health centers, such as Medicaid payment policies and medically underserved area designations. The paper also examines the recent presidential initiative to expand health centers, including a review of the process used to identify new grantees, an assessment of remaining gaps in capacity, an exploration of continuing challenges, and a discussion of unresolved policy questions.

Synergisms Of Electric Or Electromagnetic Fields And Photodynamic Effects Induce Apoptosis And Necrosis Of Cancer Cells, Radeva Maria, Lambrera Maya, Angelova Plamena, Traitcheva Nelly, Berg Hermann

Journal of Electrochemistry

Weak pulsating sinusoidal electromagnetic fields (PEMF) have been applied to change membrane permeation and induction of apoptosis (necrosis). In the case of suspension of human cancer cells U-937 and K-562 inside of Helmholtz-coils the amplitude of PEMF B=10 and at 39mT (at 50 Hz) was combined gradually with the cytotoxic agent actinomycin-C on one hand with its novel photodynamic activity on the other.

Observations Of Sagebrush Gall Morphology And Emergence Of Rhopalomyia Pomum (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) And Its Parasitoids, Ruth A. Hufbauer Aug 2004

Observations Of Sagebrush Gall Morphology And Emergence Of Rhopalomyia Pomum (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) And Its Parasitoids, Ruth A. Hufbauer

Western North American Naturalist

Galls induced by insects are specialized plant tissues thought to provide a suitable microclimate and high-quality food for insect development. Galls are also hypothesized to provide protection from predators, and particularly from parasitoids, because larger galls may be too deep for parasitoid oviposition (enemies hypothesis). However, galls may actually increase the risk of parasitism by making the location of gallformers more apparent (apparency hypothesis). Rhopalomyia pomum (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) forms soft, lobed galls on big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata: Asteraceae). The volume of the largest galls can be 600× that of the smallest. Here I explore the relationships of the …

Host-Based Morphometric Differentiation In Three Cinara Species (Insecta: Hemiptera: Aphididae) Feeding On Pinus Edulis And P. Monophylla, Colin Favret, David J. Voegtlin Aug 2004

Host-Based Morphometric Differentiation In Three Cinara Species (Insecta: Hemiptera: Aphididae) Feeding On Pinus Edulis And P. Monophylla, Colin Favret, David J. Voegtlin

Western North American Naturalist

Cinara edulis (Wilson), C. terminalis (Gillette and Palmer), and C. wahtolca Hottes were all larger when feeding on Pinus monophylla Torr. & Frem. than when feeding on P. edulis Engelm. Almost all nonsetal morphometric characters were longer in aphids on the former of these pinyon pines. Although mouthpart characters also followed this pattern of size in C. edulis and C. wahtolca, rostrum length showed the opposite pattern in C. terminalis and was shorter when on P. monophylla. This reversal in size pattern suggests that mouthpart size can be independent of overall aphid size. Principal components analyses corroborate the …

Tick-Tock: Preparing For The Next Influenza Pandemic, Eileen Salinsky Aug 2004

Tick-Tock: Preparing For The Next Influenza Pandemic, Eileen Salinsky

National Health Policy Forum

This paper describes the nature of pandemic influenza and highlights key challenges for responding to this disease threat. It explains how an influenza pandemic would differ from annual influenza outbreaks and examines how a pandemic virus could emerge. It also explores important issues involved in pandemic preparedness capabilities, including disease surveillance, vaccine production and distribution, antiviral stockpiling, health care system readiness, and public health containment measures. The national pandemic preparedness plan is briefly reviewed, and unresolved policy issues related to the plan’s implementation are identified.

Examining Multisystem Coordination In Response To Stressors In Early Childhood, Tiffany Phu Aug 2004

Examining Multisystem Coordination In Response To Stressors In Early Childhood, Tiffany Phu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents a set of two studies that investigate linkages between the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis and Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) in response to a stressor paradigm among young children experiencing low-income. Contextual/child factors that shape multisystem physiologic coordination were also examined. A novel application of structural equation modeling was used to model sample-by-sample linkages between salivary analytes that indexed HPA axis and SNS functioning (respectively, salivary cortisol and salivary alpha amylase [sAA]). The preschoolers in Study 1 showed linkages between salivary cortisol and sAA across a novel research visit at their childcare center that included a stressor paradigm. Child …

The Effects Of Selenium On Estrogen-Regulated Gene Expression In Lncap Prostate Cancer Cells, Tory L. Parker Aug 2004

The Effects Of Selenium On Estrogen-Regulated Gene Expression In Lncap Prostate Cancer Cells, Tory L. Parker

Theses and Dissertations

Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in American men and the second leading cause of cancer deaths. Supplementation with Se has reduced the incidence of prostate cancer and Se status is inversely correlated with prostate cancer risk. One molecular mechanism by which high Se concentrations may affect cancer risk is by catalyzing disulfide bond formation or otherwise complexing with reactive sulfhydryl groups in cellular proteins. The estrogen receptor (ER) contains cysteines in zinc (Zn) fingers that are susceptible to oxidation and internal disulfide formation, which can prevent DNA binding. We examined ER binding to its DNA response element …

West African Food Traditions In Virginia Foodways: A Historical Analysis Of Origins And Survivals., Lisa R. Shiflett Aug 2004

West African Food Traditions In Virginia Foodways: A Historical Analysis Of Origins And Survivals., Lisa R. Shiflett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The degree of African cultural survivals in African-American culture has been debated since the Civil War. Convincing research that West African cultural traits did survive in African-American culture, particularly in African-Amercian foodways, focuses on the lower south, neglecting the upper south. This thesis fills that gap by identifying West African traits in African-as well as Anglo-America foodways in Virginia, focusing on four broad research areas: Native American and Anglo-American foodways during the colonial and early Republic eras; West African foodways; African-American foodways during slavery; and current trends in Virginia foodways. Primary sources consulted for this study included archaeological reports, eighteenth …

Investigation And Improvement Of The Conveyor System At A Bottle Packaging Operation., Dirk Lee Fugate Aug 2004

Investigation And Improvement Of The Conveyor System At A Bottle Packaging Operation., Dirk Lee Fugate

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This investigation examines the bottle packaging conveyor system and its impact on the overall efficiency at a bottle packaging plant in Anderson, South Carolina. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the existing opportunity to reduce bottle unit cost, increase productivity, decrease the risk of work related injuries, and improve line reliability along with employee moral with the conveying system alone.

Data was gathered for this study in three ways: One, bottle packaging line lead operators were required to document the start and stop times of the conveyor system on their respective lines for six weeks. Two, a conveyor …
