Purchasing Pharmaceuticals (Health, Nutrition And Population (Hnp) Discussion Paper), Ulrika Enemark, Anita Alban, Enrique Seoane-Vazquez Sep 2004

Purchasing Pharmaceuticals (Health, Nutrition And Population (Hnp) Discussion Paper), Ulrika Enemark, Anita Alban, Enrique Seoane-Vazquez

Pharmacy Faculty Books and Book Chapters

This paper discusses the purchasing of pharmaceuticals as a key component of costeffective and equitable healthcare delivery. Pharmaceuticals account for a high, sometimes the dominant share of health expenditures in developing countries, but the desired health outcomes can only be achieved if the adequate medicines reach the right people and are used in the correct way. This requires purchasing arrangements that take into account the information asymmetry between patients and providers, ensure selection of effective, safe and affordable medicines and set economic incentives in a way that encourages rational drug use. The organizational and institutional frameworks define the roles of …

The Promethean, Volume 13, Number 01, Fall/Winter 2004, English Department, Concordia University-Portland

The Promethean

How do we decide what kind of material to print in the Promethean? It seems like that ought to be a simple question to answer, even one with an obvious answer: the best writing from the students, staff, and faculty of Concordia University. But, in fact, it's a question and a conflict that while it has frustrated some students and Promethean staffers, has ultimately vitalized our sense of purpose and energized the conversation about the role and shape of the literary arts at a Christian university. And so, since last spring, we have been wrestling with questions of what kind …

Designing A Pre-Apprenticeship Model For Women Entering And Succeeding In The Construction Trades, Susan Moir Scd, Elizabeth Skidmore Sep 2004

Designing A Pre-Apprenticeship Model For Women Entering And Succeeding In The Construction Trades, Susan Moir Scd, Elizabeth Skidmore

Labor Studies Faculty Publication Series

It has been over a quarter century since the Carter administration set a goal of increasing the number of women working in the construction industry to 6.9% of the workforce. It is often overlooked that the stated intent of this policy initiative was for women to make up 25% of construction workers by the year 2000 (Eisenberg, 1999). While some isolated projects have met or exceeded the 6.9% target, the number of women working in the construction trades nationally increased in the first few years after 1979, but leveled off at under 3% in the early 1980’s and has stayed …

Where Have All The Native Fish Gone? The Fate Of Fish That Lewis And Clark Encountered On The Lower Columbia River, Virginia L. Butler Sep 2004

Where Have All The Native Fish Gone? The Fate Of Fish That Lewis And Clark Encountered On The Lower Columbia River, Virginia L. Butler

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

As part of a special issue of the 'Oregon Historical Quarterly,' discusses the native species of fish in the lower Columbia River described by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark in 1805-06. They identified red charr, salmon trout, sturgeon, anchovy, skeet, and other fish that Indians caught and used as trade items with the Corps of Discovery. However, editors of the Lewis and Clark journals have often erred in identifying the fish Lewis and Clark described; the challenge in identifying anadromous fish lies in changing coloration, markings, and examination of habitat. There has been a drastic decline of native fish since …

A Journey With The End In Mind: An Examination Of How Advance Planning May Influence End-Of-Life Decisions, Elizabeth Lada Morse Sep 2004

A Journey With The End In Mind: An Examination Of How Advance Planning May Influence End-Of-Life Decisions, Elizabeth Lada Morse

Student Scholarship

There are many sociocultural and economic factors that shape discussions about treatment options for terminally ill patients. These factors include access to lifeprolonging medical options, societal priorities regarding the allocation of limited health care resources, cost constraints of payers, and societal consensus that patient autonomy underpins lifesustaining treatment decisions. The focus of this study is primarily directed to issues of endoflife care decisions as they relate to advance directives (ADs) and palliative care. It is argued that when death is expected or foreseeable, advance care planning has value for the individual, family, organization and community. It is debatable whether ADs …

Kentucky Bluegrass Response To Potassium And Nitrogen Fertilization, R. J.M. Fitzpatrick, Karl Guillard

Plant Science Articles

The response of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) to potassium (K) fertilization has been inconsistent. The objective of this research was to determine the effects of K fertilization across varying nitrogen (N) rates and clipping management on Kentucky bluegrass clipping yields, quality, tissue K concentrations, apparent N recovery, and N use efficiency. A 2 x 4 x 4 factorial was arranged in a splitplot design and repeated across two years. Main plots were clipping treatments (returned vs. removed) and subplots were N rates (0, 98, 196, and 294 kg ha(-1) yr(-1)) in combination with K rates (0, 81, 162, and …

Nitrogen Fertilizer Form And Associated Nitrate Leaching From Cool-Season Lawn Turf, Karl Guillard, Kelly L. Kopp

Plant Science Articles

Various N fertilizer sources are available for lawn turf. Few field studies, however, have determined the losses of nitrate (NO3-N) from lawns receiving different formulations of N fertilizers. The objectives of this study were to determine the differences in NO3-N leaching losses among various N fertilizer sources and to ascertain when losses were most likely to occur. The field experiment was set out in a completely random design on a turf typical of the lawns in southern New England. Treatments consisted of four fertilizer sources with fast- and slow-release N formulations: (i) ammonium nitrate (AN), (ii) …

Risk Factors Of Major Noncommunicable Diseases In Bahrain. The Need For A Surveillance System, Randah R. Hamadeh Sep 2004

Risk Factors Of Major Noncommunicable Diseases In Bahrain. The Need For A Surveillance System, Randah R. Hamadeh

Saudi Medical Journal

Noncommunicable diseases NCDs are the major cause of morbidity and mortality in Bahrain. The review examines the prevalence of risk factors of major NCDs from the available literature and determines the impact of the rapid socio economic changes on their burden. It further recommends ways of improving their reporting and monitoring. Smoking, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, physical activity and nutrition are considered. The review points out that data on some of the factors is available but deficient for others. The call for the establishment of an integrated surveillance system using the World Health Organization STEPwise approach is stressed.

Condylar Remodeling After Distraction Osteogenesis And Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy, Robert Barker Hoffman

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The present pilot study is a histological evaluation of mandibular condyles taken from minipigs that underwent either traditional mandibular advancement (bilateral sagittal split osteotomy), or a distraction osteogenesis procedure to advance the mandible. One pig received a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy with an immediate mandibular advancement of 14 mm, while another pig underwent distraction osteogenesis consisting of a gradual advancement of 2 mm per day to advance the mandible the same distance. The control animal received no surgery.

In the present study, the mandibular condyles of the three pigs (2 control, 2 bilateral sagittal split osteotomy, and 2 distraction osteogenesis) …

Infant Heart Transplant: Perioperative Indicators Of Neurocognitive Development, Joy Michelle Gardner Sep 2004

Infant Heart Transplant: Perioperative Indicators Of Neurocognitive Development, Joy Michelle Gardner

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Approximately five to eight births per 1000 in the United States are born with a congenital heart defect (Limperopoulos et al, 1999), the primary defect in 57% is hypoplastic left heart syndrome (Johnston, 1991). A fatal disease twenty years ago, survival has jumped from less than 5% to 91% of infants surviving their one-month birthday due to advances in palliative and transplant procedures (Razzouk et al, 1996). Unfortunately, the decrease in mortality has been unmatched by a decrease in morbidity, which continues to be a major risk factor when undergoing deep hypothermia (du Plessis, 2000). While neurodevelopmental and cognitive dysfunction …

Characterization Of The Aspergillus Parasiticus Delta12-Desaturase Gene: A Role For Lipid Metabolism In The Aspergillus/Plant Interaction, Ana M. Calvo, R.A. Wilson, P.K. Chang, N.P. Keller

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

In the mycotoxigenic oilseed pathogens Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus and the model filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans, unsaturated fatty acids and their derivatives act as important developmental signals that affect asexual conidiospore, sexual ascospore and/or sclerotial development. To dissect the relationship between lipid metabolism and fungal development, an A. parasiticus D12-desaturase mutant that was unable to convert oleic acid to linoleic acid and was thus impaired in polyunsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis was generated. The D12-desaturase mutant demonstrates delayed spore germination, a twofold reduction in growth, a reduced level of conidiation and complete loss of sclerotial development, compared to the wild-type. …
