Regulatory Motif Finding By Logic Regression, Sunduz Keles, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Chris Vulpe
Regulatory Motif Finding By Logic Regression, Sunduz Keles, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Chris Vulpe
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Multiple transcription factors coordinately control transcriptional regulation of genes in eukaryotes. Although multiple computational methods consider the identification of individual transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs), very few focus on the interactions between these sites. We consider finding transcription factor binding sites and their context specific interactions using microarray gene expression data. We devise a hybrid approach called LogicMotif composed of a TFBS identification method combined with the new regression methodology logic regression of Ruczinski et al. (2003). LogicMotif has two steps: First potential binding sites are identified from transcription control regions of genes of interest. Various available methods can be …

A Comparison Of Exhaled Breath Nitric Oxide Between Old And Young Individuals, Robert L. Gordon
A Comparison Of Exhaled Breath Nitric Oxide Between Old And Young Individuals, Robert L. Gordon
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
BACKGROUND: Older individuals suffer from higher rates of pulmonary infections than younger individuals. In addition, older individuals have increased morbidity and mortality due to pulmonary infections when compared to younger individuals. The physiological and immunological reasons for these aforementioned differences are not clear. Recently, non-invasive markers of the lung's physiologic and immunologic status have been recognized. This study employs one of these non-invasive markers, exhaled nitric oxide, in an attempt to determine how the airways may change with age, predisposing older individuals to pulmonary diseases and poorer outcomes as compared to younger individuals.
METHODS: Exhaled nitric oxide measurements were obtained …
Correlation Between Nutritional Knowledge And Food Choices In Seventh Grade Students, Jennifer Rysavy
Correlation Between Nutritional Knowledge And Food Choices In Seventh Grade Students, Jennifer Rysavy
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background Diets of adolescents in the United States are not meeting the Food Pyramid guidelines, especially for fruits, vegetables, and dairy, yet they are far exceeding the recommended daily allowance for fat and added sugars. Even though adolescents possess nutritional knowledge, they are often choosing foods based on their taste, rather than their nutritional value. This study aimed to explore the relationship between nutritional knowledge and food choices in seventh grade students. It also evaluated the relationship gender had on nutrition knowledge and food choices. Method Nutritional knowledge and food choices were studied in two seventh grade health classes at …

Dermatology For The Practicing Allergist: Tinea Pedis And Its Complications, Muhannad Al Hasan, S. Matthew Fitzgerald, Mahnaz Saoudian, Guha Krishnaswamy
ETSU Faculty Works
Tinea pedis is a chronic fungal infection of the feet, very often observed in patients who are immuno-suppressed or have diabetes mellitus. The practicing allergist may be called upon to treat this disease for various reasons. Sometimes tinea infection may be mistaken for atopic dermatitis or allergic eczema. In other patients, tinea pedis may complicate allergy and asthma and may contribute to refractory atopic disease. Patients with recurrent cellulitis may be referred to the allergist/immunologist for an immune evaluation and discovered to have tinea pedis as a predisposing factor. From a molecular standpoint, superficial fungal infections may induce a type2 …

Physical Activity Levels And Social Influences In Rural Minnesotan Hmong Children And Adolescents, Kimberly Smith
Physical Activity Levels And Social Influences In Rural Minnesotan Hmong Children And Adolescents, Kimberly Smith
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background Research has shown that physical activity levels are declining in children and adolescents of racial and ethnic minority groups. It has been suggested that social influences may play an important role in these trends. A large and growing Hmong population exists in Minnesota and there is no data regarding physical or sedentary activity trends or possible underlying social influences within this group. This study examined the physical activity levels, sedentary leisure habits, and social influences in a group of Hmong children and adolescents Methods. Following a descriptive, qualitative design, a sample of 45 Hmong children and adolescents in a …

The Female Athlete Triad: Role Of The Coach In Prevention And Intervention, Michelle Turner Breiland
Theses and Graduate Projects
Introduction The Female Athlete Triad consists of disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis. Eating disorders affect between 1-10% of adolescent and college age women (Haller, 1992),particularly in women's' sports in which leanness is considered important for performance such as cross-country running. Methods A three page 17 item questionnaire was sent out to 45 coaches of women's Division III cross-country teams in the Midwest region of the US. Descriptive statistics were run on the data. Results Results showed that 8% of coaches have coached an athlete with a diagnosed eating disorder. Of the top three topics for team discussions, 9% of coaches …

Particle Removal Rates By The Mud Shrimp Upogebia Pugettensis, Its Burrow, And A Commensal Clam: Effects On Estuarine Phytoplankton Abundance, Blaine D. Griffen, Theodore H. Dewitt, Chris Langdon
Particle Removal Rates By The Mud Shrimp Upogebia Pugettensis, Its Burrow, And A Commensal Clam: Effects On Estuarine Phytoplankton Abundance, Blaine D. Griffen, Theodore H. Dewitt, Chris Langdon
Faculty Publications
The burrowing shrimp Upogebia pugettensis is an abundant intertidal invertebrate of Pacific Northwest, USA bays and estuaries where it lives commensally with the bivalve Cryptomya californica. Suspension-feeding activities by the shrimp and by its commensal clam, as well as particle settlement within the burrow, represent 3 different components that could remove phytoplankton from water drawn into shrimp burrows. These 3 components together comprise what we call the ‘U. pugettensis shrimp-burrow complex’. In laboratory experiments, we measured particle removal by each of these components. Our results indicated that U. pugettensis itself is responsible for filtering the majority of phytoplankton removed …

The Amount Of Prenatal Care In Women Thirty-Five Years And Older And It's Effects On Birth Weight, Gestational Age And Apgar Scores, Amy Moe
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background Prenatal care is essential to the health of mothers and their babies. It is unclear what aspects of prenatal care influence maternal and infant health the most. The purpose of this study was to determine if the amount of prenatal care visits a woman thirty-five years or older receives impacts the newborn's health, Methods The medical records of all women thirty-five years of age and older who gave birth at Cambridge Allina Medical Center in a one-year period were reviewed. The number of prenatal care visits for each subject was correlated with the birth weight, gestational age and Apgar …
