Causes Of Proteolytic Degradation Of Secreted Recombinant Proteins Produced In Methylotrophic Yeast Pichia Pastoris: Case Study With Recombinant Ovine Interferon-Τ, Mehmet İnan, Michael M. Meagher, Bradley A. Plantz, Jayanta Sinha Mar 2004

Causes Of Proteolytic Degradation Of Secreted Recombinant Proteins Produced In Methylotrophic Yeast Pichia Pastoris: Case Study With Recombinant Ovine Interferon-Τ, Mehmet İnan, Michael M. Meagher, Bradley A. Plantz, Jayanta Sinha

Papers in Biochemical Engineering

It was observed that during fermentative production of recombinant ovine interferon-τ (r-oIFN-τ) in Pichia pastoris, a secreted recombinant protein, the protein was degraded increasingly after 48 h of induction and the rate of degradation increased towards the end of fermentation at 72 h, when the fermentation was stopped. Proteases, whose primary source was the vacuoles, was found in increasing levels in the cytoplasm and in the fermentation broth after 48 h of induction and reached maximal values when the batch was completed at 72 h. Protease levels at various cell fractions as well as in the culture supernatant were …

A Cost Benefit Analysis Of The State Of Tennessee's Child Support Guidelines : How Can The Orders Be Better Encouraged And Enforced?, Jennifer B. Vanzant Mar 2004

A Cost Benefit Analysis Of The State Of Tennessee's Child Support Guidelines : How Can The Orders Be Better Encouraged And Enforced?, Jennifer B. Vanzant

Honors Theses

Due to a growing number of The State of Tennessee's parents who should be receiving child support instead receiving welfare, the State is reexamining the makeup of the guidelines. Tennessee's existing child support regulations are written in a language that most individuals can interpret, but issues of compensation for additional dependents, low and very low income families, and shared parenting are three key circumstances producing inequalities that need to be improved within the guidelines. Judicial review has already made several advances in the way child support is awarded. New law has recently developed from child support case decisions regarding moneys …

Examination Of Adolescent Physical Activity And Overweight Levels , Maika Elizabeth Nelson Mar 2004

Examination Of Adolescent Physical Activity And Overweight Levels , Maika Elizabeth Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

Research suggests declines in physical activity may occur after age 12. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships between adolescent physical activity, BMI, and nutrition. Adolescents, ages 12-17 (N = 223), wore pedometers for 11 consecutive days and completed a nutrition survey, the Youth Adolescent Questionnaire. Activity levels did not differ among the ages of 12-17 year old adolescents, and boys were more active than girls. There was a low, but significant relationship between BMI and physical activity levels for both boys and girls. Energy intake was not related to BMI or physical activity levels in boys …

A Comparison Of Centrifugal Forces To Reduce The Inhibitory Effects Of Food Matrixes On Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction For The Detection Of Food Borne Viruses, Kristina Kim Carter Mar 2004

A Comparison Of Centrifugal Forces To Reduce The Inhibitory Effects Of Food Matrixes On Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction For The Detection Of Food Borne Viruses, Kristina Kim Carter

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The CDC estimated that foodborne infections resulted in approximately 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths per year in the United States (Mead, 1999). There are over 200 known diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites, toxins, metals, or prions that can be transmitted through food. Of these illnesses caused by foodborne disease, the CDC estimates that 38.6 million cases are from identifiable pathogens and 30.9 million of these cases are caused by viruses. Hence, approximately 80% of foodborne illnesses of known etiology result from viral transmission (Mead, 1999). Viral gastrointestinal illness may be caused by virus families such as: …

Patients' Perceptions Of Herbal Medicines And Natural Supplements, Penny L. Vinnedge

Theses and Graduate Projects

Background Herbal medicine and natural supplement use is becoming more popular among the general population. They are being used as adjuncts to conventional medicine, in place of conventional medicine, or as a last resort after failure of conventional medicine. There are benefits and downfalls to these alternative therapies. The problem is determining what beliefs patients have about herbs/supplements and how they form these beliefs. Methods A written survey was distributed to patients visiting a family practice clinic over a single week. Descriptive statistics were obtained to determine frequencies and totals of data and two types of inferential statistics were performed …
