Can Diversity Extend To Ways Of Knowing? Engaging Cross-Cultural Paradigms, Craig A. Hassell Apr 2004

Can Diversity Extend To Ways Of Knowing? Engaging Cross-Cultural Paradigms, Craig A. Hassell

Journal of Extension

This article briefly outlines three examples of cross-cultural academic programs, each bringing to the table either indigenous knowledge or Chinese medicine, knowledge generally considered to lie beyond the "research base" of 1862 land-grant institutions. In the process, the gate-keeping function of our "research-base" is challenged, examined here through a cultural lens. Including diverse ways of knowing as assets within the scope of academic work can enhance engagement outreach, but it asks us to re-examine basic assumptions of our academic culture.

Use Retrospective Surveys To Obtain Complete Data Sets And Measure Impact In Extension Programs, Martha Raidl, Shelly Johnson, Kali Gardiner, Marty Denham Apr 2004

Use Retrospective Surveys To Obtain Complete Data Sets And Measure Impact In Extension Programs, Martha Raidl, Shelly Johnson, Kali Gardiner, Marty Denham

Journal of Extension

The increasing emphasis on evaluation suggests that Extension programs should use the most effective tools to measure impact. The project reported here used a retrospective survey to: compare the retrospective survey and pre/post survey in the number of incomplete responses and monitor participant changes in nutrition, food safety, and resource management behaviors in a Food Stamp Nutrition Education (FSNE) program. Results indicated that the pre-post survey yielded incomplete data, with 16% of questions unanswered, while 100% of questions were answered on the retrospective survey. All self-reported nutrition, food safety, and resource management behaviors significantly increased.

Gaps, Inexperience, Inconsistencies, And Overlaps: Crisis In The Regulation Of Genetically Modified Plants And Animals, Gregory N. Mandel Apr 2004

Gaps, Inexperience, Inconsistencies, And Overlaps: Crisis In The Regulation Of Genetically Modified Plants And Animals, Gregory N. Mandel

William & Mary Law Review

The regulation of genetically modified products pursuant to statutes enacted decades prior to the advent of biotechnology has created a regulatory system that is passive rather than proactive about risks, has difficulty adapting to biotechnology advances, and is highly fractured and inefficient-transgenic plants and animals are governed by at least twelve different statutes and five different agencies or services. The deficiencies resulting from this piecemeal approach to regulation unnecessarily expose society and the environment to adverse risks of biotechnology and introduce numerous inefficiencies into the regulatory system. These risks and inefficiencies include gaps in regulation, duplicative and inconsistent regulation, unnecessary …

Treatment Of Plummer-Vinson Syndrome With Savary-Gilliard Dilatation, Mohamed I. Yasawy

Saudi Medical Journal

The association of postcricoid dysphagia, iron deficiency anemia and upper esophageal webs is known as the Plummer-Vinson syndrome (PVS). It is predominantly a disease of middle aged females. Four patients with cervical web of the esophagus were studied, dysphagia was mostly for solids, which were non-progressive and were present for years before they presented. Initial treatment in 3 patients consisted of esophageal dilatation with savary bougies after initial rupture of the web by endoscope. In one case, due to failure to visualize the esophageal lumen by fluoroscopy guidance, guide wire was introduced and breaking of the web was performed by …

Management Of Vegetation To Reduce Wildlife Hazards At Airports, Brian E. Washburn, Thomas W. Seamans

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Wildlife-aircraft collisions (wildlife strikes) pose a serious safety risk to aircraft. Wildlife strikes cost civil and military aviation at least S490 million annually in the United States (Cleary et al. [I]). Over 46,500 wildlife strikes with civil aircraft were reported to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) during 1990-2002 (Cleary et al. 111). Aircraft collisions with birds accounted for 97% of the reported strikes, whereas strikes with mammals and reptiles were 3% and Larus spp.), waterfowl such as Canada geese (Branta canadensis), raptors (hawks and owls), and blackbirds (Ictennae)/starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) are the species presently of …

“Emerging” Parasitic Infections In Arctic Ungulates, Susan J. Kutz, Eric P. Hoberg, John Nagy, Lydden Polley, Brett Elkin Apr 2004

“Emerging” Parasitic Infections In Arctic Ungulates, Susan J. Kutz, Eric P. Hoberg, John Nagy, Lydden Polley, Brett Elkin

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Important drivers for emergence of infectious disease in wildlife include changes in the environment, shrinking habitats or concentration of wildlife, and movement of people, animals, pathogens, or vectors. In this paper we present three case-studies of emerging parasitic infections and diseases in ungulates in the Canadian north. First we discuss climate warming as an important driver for the emergence of disease associated with Umingmakstrongylus pallikuukensis, a nematode lungworm of muskoxen. Then we examine how Protostrongylus stilesi, the sheep lungworm, emerged (or re-emerged) in muskoxen after re-introduction of this host into its historical range made it sympatric with Dall’s …

Identifying The Public Value In Extension Programs, Laura Kalambokidis Apr 2004

Identifying The Public Value In Extension Programs, Laura Kalambokidis

Journal of Extension

Government budget crises have compelled state Extension Services to defend their receipt of state and county funding. A key to that defense is persuading citizens and policymakers of Extension's "public value": the benefit from Extension programs to those who are not directly served. This article uses the principles of public sector economics to help formulate that defense and describes how Extension staff have applied economic principles to identify the public value in their own programs. The approach, developed into a workshop for program teams, serves to both sustain programs that have strong public value and identify programs that do not.

A Comparison Of Anuran Species Richness Between Primary And Secondary Forest In São Francisco Do Pará, Michael Reichert Apr 2004

A Comparison Of Anuran Species Richness Between Primary And Secondary Forest In São Francisco Do Pará, Michael Reichert

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Deforestation in the Amazon has become a serious conservation issue. The process of destruction of primary forest results in the creation of secondary forest that differs from primary forest in a number of important ways. Anurans (frogs and toads) are one group that may be affected by the loss of primary forest and creation of secondary forest areas, and are an important focus for conservation efforts. Previous studies on anuran reactions to loss of primary forest have been few and inconclusive. This study examined anuran species richness in an area of primary and secondary forest in order to determine whether …

Herd Efficiency And Profitability, Jesse Russell, D. R. Zobell

All Current Publications

Raising beef cattle can be very rewarding. First, if you like raising cattle, maintaining your tie to the land, and seeing the product of your labors, it can truly be satisfying to see young calves in the spring, watch them grow and progress. Second, here can also be a financial reward when the calves are weaned and sold. However, the satisfaction of these two aspects may all depend on your herd’s efficiency and profitability.

Reparations, Grover Cleveland Winfield Iii Apr 2004

Reparations, Grover Cleveland Winfield Iii

English Theses & Dissertations

Reparations, my first collection of poems, is a book in which I pay homage to my African ancestors by striving, through poetry, to repair the spiritual, mental, and physical damage that I have experienced and continue to experience via personal and societal ideologies. Though Reparations cannot totally restore me, I believe poetry can aid my efforts at self-restoration and help me honor my ancestors, their determination to overcome all odds. I believe Reparations can work to provide some repair because the act of writing a poem forces the poet to reflect on his or her life.

Focusing on issues such …

Lysistrata, Women And War: International Law's Treatment Of Women In Conflict And Post-Conflict Situations, Emma L. Lindsay Mar 2004

Lysistrata, Women And War: International Law's Treatment Of Women In Conflict And Post-Conflict Situations, Emma L. Lindsay

ExpressO

Aristophanes’ Lysistrata is powerful anti-war play often revived during times of international conflict. This paper uses Lysistrata to highlight and critique binary oppositions that underpin the treatment of women in conflict and post-conflict situations in the play and in international law. While many of the experiences of women and girls in war are similar to those of men and boys, there are important differences. Existing inequalities between women and men, and patterns of discrimination against women and girls, tend to be exacerbated in wartime. There are circumstances in which women suffer harms of a different kind and to a different …
