Generic domain names, however, possess inherent goodwill that dictates different treatment.

Great Plains Native American Representations Along The Lewis And Clark Trail, Kevin S. Blake Jan 2004

Great Plains Native American Representations Along The Lewis And Clark Trail, Kevin S. Blake

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Memorializing history in the landscape reflects deep-seated cultural needs. This process not only pays homage to the actions, events, or persons deemed significant at a particular point in time, but it also offers a chance for the creators of the historic marker to write their version of history and to use an interpretive format that highlights their own understanding and values. Cultural geographer Kenneth Foote observes in a study of American memorials, "What is accepted as historical truth is often a narrative shaped and reshaped through time to fit the demands of contemporary society." The significance of selecting particular historical …

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In The False Traitor: Louis Riel in Canadian Culture, Albert Braz examines treatments of the mercurial nineteenth-century Metis leader in an astonishing array of plays, poems, novels, television dramas, Hollywood films, and sculpture. His study spans the century and more since Riel emerged at the head of the Metis resistance at Red River, Manitoba, in 1869-70 and was executed in 1885 as a traitor to Canada for his role in fomenting rebellion on the Saskatchewan.

You Know More Than You Think: State V. Townsend, Imputed Knowledge, And Implied Consent Under The Washington Privacy Act, James A. Pautler Jan 2004

You Know More Than You Think: State V. Townsend, Imputed Knowledge, And Implied Consent Under The Washington Privacy Act, James A. Pautler

Seattle University Law Review

Townsend is worth examining for two additional reasons. First, Townsend illustrates the palpable need for the legislature to update the WPA. The underlying problem in Townsend was the application of a statute that was written in the era of rotary telephones to the issues that arise in modem electronic communications. Because of the inherent differences between electronic and traditional media, novel questions invariably arise that cannot be readily answered by resorting to existing doctrines. Finally, the plain language of the current statute has absurd results when applied to the modem infrastructure of the Internet. Part II of this Note discusses …

Making Adjunct Faculty Part Of The Academic Community, Karen R. Krupar Jan 2004

Making Adjunct Faculty Part Of The Academic Community, Karen R. Krupar

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Hundreds of adjunct faculty in four-year colleges and universities teach over 45% of the courses, especially in the general education programs, but few institutions have chosen to construct adjunct faculty development programs that integrate these faculty into the instructional community. Metropolitan State College of Denver, recipient ofa Title III grant to build an adjunct development program received a TIA-CREF Hesburgh Award of Excellence in 2001 for its innovative adjunct support activities. This chapter articulates the features of this successful program and its effect on the adjunct faculty cohort at the college.

Promoting A Sound Process For Teaching Awards Programs: Appropriate Work For Faculty Development Centers, Nancy Van Note Chism Jan 2004

Promoting A Sound Process For Teaching Awards Programs: Appropriate Work For Faculty Development Centers, Nancy Van Note Chism

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Examination of a sample of teaching awards programs at colleges and universities in the United States shows that the selection process for most is not based on explicit criteria, evidence that matches the criteria, and announced standards for making judgments about the candidates. If teaching awards programs are to be effective on any level, whether serving as a symbol of institutional commitment, affirming good teachers, or inspiring others to teach well, the quality of their selection process must be credible. This chapter provides recommendations for how faculty development centers can help their institutions to craft a selection process that will …

Documenting The Educational Innovations Of Faculty: A Win–Win Situation For Faculty And The Faculty Development Center, Phyllis Blumberg Jan 2004

Documenting The Educational Innovations Of Faculty: A Win–Win Situation For Faculty And The Faculty Development Center, Phyllis Blumberg

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Compiling faculty members’ teaching innovations into an annual campus-specific publication allows others to learn about these ideas and adapt them. This chapter will describe 1) the process used to develop such a Document of Innovation, 2) the types of innovation abstracted, and 3) this document’s impact on an institution. A dissemination process including individual meetings with campus leaders provides greater visibility for the Teaching and Learning Center and the featured faculty. An analysis of time annual publications yield comprehensive data about the campus’ faculty, their innovative teaching trends, and describes the current teaching climate on the campus.

Developing An Electronic Portfolio, Kristopher Jay Nardini

Graduate Research Papers

As the electronic portfolio is a relatively new technology to most, this paper serves as a brief literature review on the emerging practice of developing electronic portfolios, how the transition from the traditional 3-ring binder and paper-based documents to a digital version takes place, and the process involved in developing your own electronic portfolio. Included are step-by-step instructions leading you through the process, time saving ideas offered by someone who has already made the mistakes and the proper adjustments, as well as things to consider when choosing the type of portfolio and items to include in it.

Determination Of The Nutritional Level Of Calcium And Phosphorus In Llamas (Lama Glama) In Two Seasons In The Condoriri Agricultural Experiment Center, Gustavo Adolfo León Titichoca

Theses and Dissertations

The concentrations of calcium and phosphorus were determined in 12 llamas from the Condoriri Agricultural Experiment Center (Oruro Technical University) of Oruro, Bolivia during two seasons (wet and dry) and at three ages (newborn, juvenile, and adult). Samples of flesh were taken from the arm, leg, back, rib, and neck. Pasture samples (grassland and prairie) were used to determine the rate of biting of each animal studied. The blood samples were taken by extracting blood from a jugular vein. The minerals (Ca and P) in the flesh are highest in the wet season, 113.78 mg/100 g. The newborns were found …

Congressional Representation Of Black Interests: Recognizing The Importance Of Stability, Guy-Uriel Charles, Vincent L. Hutchins, Harwood K. Mcclerking Jan 2004

Congressional Representation Of Black Interests: Recognizing The Importance Of Stability, Guy-Uriel Charles, Vincent L. Hutchins, Harwood K. Mcclerking

Faculty Scholarship

The relationship between black constituency size and congressional support for black interests has two important attributes: magnitude and stability. Although previous research has examined the first characteristic, scant attention has been directed at the second. This article examines the relationship between district racial composition and congressional voting patterns with a particular emphasis on the stability of support across different types of votes and different types of districts. We hypothesize that, among white Democrats, the influence of black constituency size will be less stable in the South, owing in part to this region’s more racially divided constituencies. Examining LCCR scores from …

Utah's Plight: A Passage Through The Great Depression, Joseph F. Darowski Jan 2004

Utah's Plight: A Passage Through The Great Depression, Joseph F. Darowski

Theses and Dissertations

The Great Depression marked a fateful passage in the annals of the American people. President Roosevelt's New Deal, the nation's signature response, proved to be a determined but erratic reaction. Against the backdrop of a nation deeply mired in an unrelenting international depression, dramatic events played themselves out in the lives of the men and women of Utah. Throughout, fidelity to principles of independence, self-reliance, and self-sufficiency were sorely challenged.

The people of Utah found succor in two almost diametrically opposed responses. The New Deal offered an amalgam of programs and panaceas through which the federal government attempted to deliver …

Why Teach ''Research As A Conversation'' In Freshman Composition Courses? A Metaphor To Help Librarians And Composition Instructors Develop A Shared Model, P. S. Mcmillen, E. Hill Jan 2004

Why Teach ''Research As A Conversation'' In Freshman Composition Courses? A Metaphor To Help Librarians And Composition Instructors Develop A Shared Model, P. S. Mcmillen, E. Hill

Library Faculty Research

Ongoing discussion between the Oregon State University (OSU) libraries' acting instruction coordinator and the Assistant Composition Coordinator focuses on improving collaboration between our programs and more effectively integrating the research process into the English composition curriculum. We briefly describe a qualitative analysis of the problems with students' writing that led us to develop a new model for integrating the research and writing processes. We provide our rationale for selecting conversation as a metaphor for research and summarize suggested teaching strategies from the literature that are consistent with this metaphor and approach.

Evaluating The Return On Investment Of Faculty Development, Timothy W. Bothell, Tom Henderson Jan 2004

Evaluating The Return On Investment Of Faculty Development, Timothy W. Bothell, Tom Henderson

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

How can the return on investment of faculty development be determined? One way to do this is through the application of a highly replicated and reported return on investment (ROI) process. This chapter reviews briefly an ROI process used by organizations throughout the world, a process that has been the basis for over 100 published studies and is the most validated and reported ROI process used for determining the monetary impact of learning. The process utilizes a five-level framework and a step-by-step ROI process model. These components are reviewed in this chapter and an example of return on investment based …

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

A transparent artificial cornea derived from biological material is the ultimate goal of corneal research. Attempts at artificial corneal constructs produced from synthetic polymers have proved unsuccessful due to lack of biocompatibility and ability to integrate into the tissue. We have designed a corneal model derived from collagenous biological materials that has several advantages: it has low antigenicity and therefore small chance of eliciting an immune reaction, it can be broken down by the body’s own cells and gradually replaced over time by natural materials, and it may contain signaling information for native cells, thereby inducing normal phenotype and behavior. …

The market analysis for the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve revealed that there is a diverse body of coastal resources management training providers who offer training in the Florida Panhandle. These organizations are primarily either governmental agencies, or institutions of higher education. Most of them offer this training to various audiences as part of their missions, although a select few offer it as the sole purpose of their organizations.
